Celebrating events and festivals in school not only fortifies learning but
also escalates strong cultural beliefs in children. Students tend to remember
important days, if told what the occasion signifies. Special
assembly programmes by Nursery Wing children gave the school, added yet
another feather in its a cap. Five special assembly programmes namely Shri
Krishna Janmashtami, Deepawali, Kannada Rajyotsava, Christmas and
Makara Sankranthti left the audience in awe. Pookalam, translated from
Malayalam means patterns created with flowers. KG l and KG II children had an
opportunity to celebrate Onam, the annual harvest festival of Kerala in
school. Pookalam, is a quintessential element of Onam. Children laboured over
the design of pookalam with fresh flower petals and leaves for hours, keen to
make the most colourful and breath-taking floral carpet.

Organising field trips is an integral part of our school curriculum as it
reinforces experimental and contextual learning. KGI & KGII children were
amused by `A visit to the Post office’. Children carried a self-
addressed post card conveying festive greetings handwritten by themselves to
their respective parents. These postcards were dropped off inside the post box.
Parents were thrilled to receive the postcards in their respective homes on a
later date when delivered by the postman .Clay Modelling was lined up in the
month of August. The theme given was fruits and vegetables for
KG I and Ganesh Chaturthi was the theme for KG II students.

Puzzle improves problem solving skills and critical thinking ability of an
individual. A puzzle competition using the iPad was in store for students during
October. Kannada shloka competition was a great success of the year in
November. Children invoked blessings of God in a wonderful way. Mindbender
and Spellicans - the goal was to fill the white squares
with three letter words , by solving clues, which lead to the
answers. The answers are placed in the grid from left to right and from top to
bottom. Yes!!! Cross word puzzle competition (Mind Bender) was introduced for
the first time in Nursery Wing for class KG II. The Spellicans was conducted for
KG I involving word search.

Playing games and participating in activities gives children an opportunity to
share, laugh and have fun. Sharing the experiences with family and friends
only enhances it multi fold. While winning may be the ultimate prize, it is
equally important to know how to get there? Nursery wing had their Annual

Smart City Project Review Article

“The question is not whether your part of the world is going to change. The
question is how. “ - Edward T. McMahon
It took off as a usual Geography project when the students began designing
smart cities. It was evaluated for marks but later got an opportunity to go
beyond evaluation. It was an opportunity to explore new skills and kindle
passion by designing dream cities. Two teams were formed and cities were
designed and finally presented at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements on
April 8, 2019.
The first team comprised of Aaryan Rao, Aditya B Pattavardhanam and Surabhi
R. These students set out to design their city in the deserts of Rajasthan using
the Minecraft Education App. Located near Balotra on the banks of river Luni,
the city was equipped with Artificial Intelligence, advanced technologies and
solutions, efficient transport system, smart planning, eco-friendly features,
efficient water management and supply systems. Shaped like a Rajasthani
wearing a turban, the city aimed at improving tourism and sustainability.

The second team comprised of Thanushree.S, Sanvi A Patil, Sathvik.S.Rao and
Mohamed Zulqarnain. This team believed that “the best way to predict the
future is to design it”. They named their smart city ‘Indraprastha’, which means
‘the city of God Indra’ and resembles heaven. This city was outlined in the shape
of ‘Garuda’, which is located in a small village called Padukone, Udupi district.
“Urbanisation works when it creates journey as desirable as the destination”.
The students concentrated on connectivity and optimum usage of renewable
energy sources.

Using waste as a source of electricity, artificially synthesising ethane to fuel
vehicles, usage of bio domes, pisciculture stations, air purifying towers, hyper
loop, usage of advanced artificial intelligence were some of the highlights of
their city. One of the main characteristics of their city was usage of plastic waste
to manufacture roads that can absorb water. Apart from advanced technologies,
the team also concentrated on ways to socialise in the city by incorporating
public destination spots, amusement parks, multi stadiums, museums and
tourist places. This city aimed at improving the standard of living of every
person in the city.
The students were enlightened with the information from the professionals at
IIHS. They learnt the practical aspects of designing a city. The opportunity
exposed them to new technologies and helped them understand the planning,
development and working of a city. The professionals who attended the session,
patiently listened to the presentation and gave their valuable feedback. The
students would like to exprerss their heartfelt gratitude to the school
management, Geography department, ICT department and IIHS!

And the ‘Best Teacher’ award goes to….

She is a martinet, value-driven person, passionate and goal-oriented. Her
presence is nothing short of the lightsaber of the Star Wars fame. It’s no
wonder that Mrs. Rajeshwari from our school won the ‘Best Teacher’ award, a
Government award for the Taluk level.

Mr Ashwath Narayan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka honoured Mrs.
Rajeshwari with this coveted award on 18th September, 2019. She has also won
two similar awards 20 years ago. That should speak volumes for the quality of
her work and the dedication she puts in. In all modesty, Mrs Rajeshwari
extends her heartfelt gratitude to the Management of DES; Mrs. Shashikala
(former principal of DES); Mrs Aparna Ramasheshaiah, Principal DES and Mrs
Anita, Vice Principal DES. Her thank you is also extended to her colleagues, and
most importantly, Mr Vijaykumar, Headmaster for supporting her in winning
this award.

Below is an interview with her.

What was your first impression about our school when you joined and
exactly how long ago was that?
I saw that there was a very pleasant atmosphere when I came here 12 years
ago. I felt the management was very humble and encouraging.

2. How have you evolved as a teacher in this school?
I have evolved more as a learner than a teacher, knowledge has no bounds, I
learn each day. Education and learning is an ongoing process. In order to
strengthen my teaching skill, I always make it a point to keep myself updated.

3. What is your teaching philosophy?
Discipline is very important. Where there is discipline, there is knowledge.
Again, I would like to highlight that discipline and education go hand in hand.
It is quintessential to be disciplined in order to acquire knowledge. Great
teachers are not born in the mind of the students but in the hearts of the
students. A good teacher according to me is like a candle that consumes itself to
light the way for others.

4. How do you manage your personal and professional time?
It is very important for women, definitely my family is important but I give
higher importance to my profession. I plan academics and class activities week
-wise and each day. I spend at least 2 hours every weekend for my class plans.

158

5. Who influenced you to become a teacher?
My father. I want to dedicate this award to my father.

6. What according to you is the biggest challenge faced by today’s students?
I think peer pressure, academic wise and behaviour wise. They get so much
information from so many sources and they cannot handle themselves. Even
though it is important for them to classify what is right and what is wrong, a
few of them fail to do it. It’s important for the school as well as the parents to
pay attention and help the students especially during adolescence.
Disorganisation is another problem in this generation . Too much involvement
or even lack of involvement of parents affects the life of the students. Parents
and teachers play a very important role in the life of adolescents.

7.What educational websites would you recommend (if any) to the students
concerning you subject or any other?
There is no need for such things. A good teacher is more helpful than a good
website.

8. How do you compare your school days to the present schooling
environment?
In those days, we did not have the freedom to express our views, the facilities
given were mostly basic then. We would spend time in the library to collect
information. We had to imagine to understand what we were taught unlike the
children of today who have modules, websites, etc.

159

9. How are you adapting to the current generation of students?
Frankly speaking upbringing students has seen a drastic change. It is very chal-
lenging, as the present generation of students are very smart.
To overcome this, I have adapted to this younger generation by being open
minded trying to understand students’ views. It is one of the skills of the teach-
er to listen and also channelize young minds who are the future of the world.
10. Who is your role model?
I think along with my father, my childhood teachers have also influenced me.
My father is the one who taught me how to lead my life. He used to read out the
Ramayana, talk about few characters and their values and ethics (mostly Laksh-
mana and Bharata) and that has definitely had a positive impact on my life.
11. Is there any personality whom you admire?
Yes, there are many actually, but specifically, Swami Vivekananda for his values,
Sir. M. Visvesvaraya for his discipline and Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam for his scien-
tific views.
12. What is your message for today’s children?
A message for the upcoming generation is to be yourself and love yourself. You
must also remember to be true to yourself. Be watchful and aware of what you
say or do. Never let yourself or your parents or your teachers down. Be a life-
long learner. Most importantly remember to respect everyone.
