“Water is Life, Water is Food” Celebrating this year's World Food Day in style, the Rotaract District Steering Committee of Rotary International District 3220 has once again organized a debating competition under the theme "Water is life, Water is food." The theme emphasizes the critical role of water for life on Earth and water as the fundamental element for survival and the embodiment of food. The Inter-University debate commenced on October 10th and had its Final Debate on October 17, 2023, in the United Nations Compound. This prestigious debate competition was hosted by the Rotaract Clubs of Cinec Campus, Royal Institute of Colombo and SLIIT and attracted 8 universities from across the island, including the Informatics Institute of Technology, Kotelawala Defence University, University of Jayewardenepura, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna and many other esteemed institutions. 9

Penned by: Rtr. heidi Hettiarachchi EDITORIAL MEMBER 2023-24 The sole purpose of hosting and participating in this competition is to address and resolve issues that have affected the world on a global scale, particularly focusing on common yet essential problems, such as the topic debated in the finals: “Sustainable water management practices in agriculture are often implemented to ensure food security and address water scarcity concerns.” The fierce yet captivating debate began with the University of Ruhuna presenting their proposition statement while facing their opponents from the University of Peradeniya, who undoubtedly rose to the challenge. The two teams were neck-and-neck until the University of Peradeniya emerged as the victor, securing the championship, while the University of Ruhuna secured the runnerup position. The decision on their victory was solely determined by the three esteemed judges, who played a vital role in the project and were nominated by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP). The day was highly anticipated and will be remembered with fervor, as Rtr. Joshua Dias and Rtr. Charith Yohan witnessed the victorious triumph of Peradeniya and the honor they brought to their university with their compelling ideas that were conveyed clearly and impressively. The event enriched our collective knowledge on the importance of making our voices heard and addressing critical issues.

Halloween activities took place at JR Jayawardane Hall on November 4th, starting at 6 p.m. The venue was filled with creepy décor, creating the ideal atmosphere for a spine-tingling evening. The multitude of unique costumes, most of which were eerie, dark, and artistically disturbing, was the night's high point. Holidaze Typically, Christmas is a time when the neighbourhood is illuminated by twinkling lights, Christmas music fills the air, and the sound of laughing reverberates through the neighbourhood. The Rotaract Club of SLIIT's Board of Officials had an entirely different plan for their annual Christmas party. This year's Christmas party will not have the customary dazzling lights and cacophony of music. Lightning bolts in a pitch black explosion! The motif for this year wasn't deliberate, believe it or not. The board members continued to make the most of an already exciting holiday season, despite the fact that the entire country was experiencing a power outage on December 9th. The celebration began with a round of "Guess Who?" as the holiday spirit was evident on the faces of all those present. Because it was a very amusing sight to see so few people in the dark, even though they were all dressed in blue and white. The Secret Santa gifts continued to pour in at the same time!

Penned by: Rtr. Yohan Wickramasinghe CO-EDITOR 2023-24 Playing a quick game of "What's in the bag?!?" the board members were ultimately treated to the night's most thrilling moments. With the exception of the bustling rain outside, the whole room grew quiet. As soon as the Secret Santa presents were unwrapped, the entire room burst into jubilation and curiosity. The joy and anticipation caused by the presents that were given to everyone caused the entire planet to freeze. Once the gift-giving was done, the crowd was still perplexed, but there was a ray of optimism that the Christmas spirit was genuine; the current had returned, and the celebration was in full swing. There was perfect atmosphere, lights that were nearly blinding, and music rumbling against the house's walls. At the meal, everyone was sweating, salivating, and their appetites were growling since each board member had brought a dish whose name began with the same letter as their first name. For reasons other than the norm, this Christmas will be remembered for a long time. In its own special way, this Christmas will go down in history.

26 The world is often cruel and unforgiving. You and I are very lucky, having always had a roof over our heads, never having to worry about the next meal. Not everyone has that luxury in our country, seeing as how almost 800,000 families do not have a home of their own. However, a project is quietly making an impact, one meal at a time. Driven by compassion, a dedicated team extends a helping hand to those in need, offering warm meals to those in need. On World Food Day, 16th of October, Rotaract Club of SLIIT collaborated with other Rotaract clubs from not just around Sri Lanka, but other countries from South Asia, namely India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Organizing an international project such as this is not a small task. This substantial humanitarian project saw 11 Rotaract clubs from the aforementioned countries come together for one altruistic day. The clubs which joined hands for this massive project are the Rotaract Clubs of SLIIT, APIIT, Colombo West, Trincomalee, Wellawatte, Anand Institute of Higher Technology, Chandipur Rupashi, Chawal Green, Chunnakam, Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering, and Karachi United.

Penned by: Rtr. aditha abeynayake EDITORIAL MEMBER 2023-24 As for what happened on the Colombo end of the project, many Rotaract members from SLIIT and APIIT came together to distribute nutritious, balanced meal packets to those in need around the Borella junction area. The impact made by the project was evident from the reactions of the people who received the meals. The smiles on their faces were enough to make the day of the kindhearted volunteers. In the harsh daily struggle for survival on the streets, a warm meal can be a lifeline. For those enduring homelessness, each plate of nourishment represents more than just sustenance, it's a symbol of hope. Even though handing out meals is by no means a solution for the grand problem which plagues the poverty-stricken countries in the third world such as ours, such kind gestures are still enough to restore one’s faith in humanity.

Success in the ever-changing world of Rotaract depends on people working together. Members of Rotary International are more than just hard workers; they are part of a worldwide movement that promotes leadership, service, and harmony. The establishment of Twin Club Agreements and the sharing of letterheads are major manifestations of this cooperative mentality. Rotaract Clubs come from all over the world and have all kinds of different backgrounds and experiences, but they all have one thing in common: they want to make a difference, both locally and internationally. By exchanging letterheads, we show that we are one in the same and that we are part of a larger network of people working towards the same goals. Twin Club Agreements formally establish mutual support and cooperation between two clubs, further solidifying this connection. The cultural exchanges, resource sharing, and collaborative projects are outlined in these agreements. These actions foster real connections rather than just administrative formality. Using formal letterheads in correspondence shows an eagerness to network, converse, and work together. These actions establish credibility, which is crucial for building successful relationships. By pooling resources, exchanging knowledge, and taking on large-scale projects, Twin Club Agreements increase the positive influence of Rotaract programmes.

The Twin Club Agreements and Letterhead Exchanges symbolize camaraderie, solidarity, and mutual support for Rotaract's mission. Rtr. Jayod Perera and Rtr. Sansika Koddithuwakku, the Directors of International Services Avenue, put in a lot of time and effort to set these partnerships up. Through these endeavours, Rotaractors are able to gain knowledge from one another, especially through culturally enlightening interactions that increase awareness and comprehension. Good deeds are important, but so is the opportunity for individual and group development. When Rotaract clubs keep up these exchanges and agreements, they're doing more than just becoming closer; they're building alliances that can make a difference on a global scale. The spirit of service and cooperation in Rotaract is boundless, as these agreements show. This hands-on approach aimed to contribute directly to the enhancement of the environment and serve as a proactive response to the urgent need for reforestation.

Penned by: Rtr. heidi Hettiarachchi EDITORIAL MEMBER 2023-24 By uniting under the banner of Green Life, these clubs demonstrated the power of collective action and the impact that a community-driven approach can have on addressing environmental challenges. Through tree planting, they not only contributed to the immediate landscape but also fostered a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among their members and the broader community. This collaborative effort serves as a testament to the potential for positive change when like-minded organizations come together for a shared purpose. In a noteworthy collaboration, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT and the LEO Club of Colombo Griffins joined forces at Homagama Mahinda Rajapaksha College. The focus of their collective efforts was the planting of jack trees. This specific choice of trees not only aligns with the overarching goal of reforestation but also addresses local ecological needs.

Bridging Continents, Building Bonds The past quarter has been a whirlwind of international engagement for the Rotaract Club of SLIIT. Stepping beyond borders, we've hosted virtual joint general meetings with clubs from several different countries, proving that service knows no limits, and bringing together Rotaractors from across the globe, strengthening bonds and paving the way for future projects: September 21, 2023: Rotaract Club of Rudramati RID 3292, Nepal October 9, 2023: Rotaract Club of Lumbini Stars RID 3292, Nepal October 16, 2023: Rotaract Club of Indore Activists RID 3040, India October 18, 2023: Rotaract Club of Petilia Policastro RID 2102, Italy October 21, 2023: Rotaract Club of Thane North RID 3142, India November 30, 2023: Rotaract Club of Akash RID 3232, India December 1, 2023: Rotaract Club of Charumati RID 3292, Nepal Why invest in these global connections? Beyond practical projects, these connections foster empathy and understanding. We hear firsthand about the hopes and struggles of our international peers, challenging our own perspectives and enriching our worldview. We celebrate each other's successes, and offer support during times of need. This global journey was masterfully spearheaded by International Service Directors Rtr. Jayod Perera and Rtr. Sansika Kodithuvakku, along with their dedicated committee members, who tirelessly connected clubs and fueled the flames of international collaboration. Their hard work has sown the seeds of a truly impactful future for the Rotaract Club of SLIIT. In a world that often feels divided, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT is choosing connections. We're building bridges through shared passion, service, and friendship. In a forever changing world, the monotonous routines often lead people towards depression. The mental health of people, particularly university students, is often disregarded. Because of that, it's important to stop, step back, and examine your mental health every once in a while. Ignoring mental health issues for too long can have disastrous results. The person sitting next to you might be experiencing extreme emotional lows, at their rock bottom, and most people wouldn't even realize it until it’s too late. "Mind Sync" is an initiative of the SLIIT Rotaract Club to assist students in taking the initial step toward selfdiscovery and improvement. 35 Organized by Rtr. Chathurya Gamage and Rtr. Yasith Thalakotuna, the workshop was held on the 10th of October at SLIIT premises. The special guest speaker Ms. Rashini Ayanthi Bandara, International wellbeing consultant for International Transport Federation, counseling psychologist at Mind Heals Pvt (Ltd) and a visiting lecturer, conducted the workshop. The workshop achieved resounding success as it delved into unconventional subjects, shedding light on generally undiscussed themes such as the significance of mental health in one's life and the connection between mental wellbeing and physical health. fit & well phase 1 MIND SYNC:

The latter segment of the workshop involved dividing students into small groups and engaging them in fun and interactive group activities, effectively educating them about intricacies of mental health. The general youth of Sri Lanka is suffering from emotional repression, primarily due to the cultural stigma surrounding seeking professional assistance for mental health concerns. Most Sri Lankans are still clasping onto the belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Though the younger generation is not as adamant in this line of thinking, the general notion persists. The goal of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT is to change this, step by step. And “Mind Sync” is but a part of a much larger initiative, “Fit & Well” with the goal to support stressed students in their journey toward improved mental and physical well-being. Look forward to the next rendition of this project as we plan to change lives, one at a time. Penned by: Rtr. Aditha Abeynayake EDITORIAL MEMBER 2023-24

Project Safe Haven was a meticulously organized initiative by the dedicated members of the Rotaract Club at Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT). This commendable undertaking involved collaboration and donations directed towards Embark and the Veterinary Research Institute of Peradeniya. On October 28, 2023, this event commenced under the leadership of Rtr. Sayuru Bopitiya, Rtr. Anouk Abeyagunewardena, and Rtr. Ranuka Perera. At its core, the project aimed to raise awareness for animals in need and promote a compassionate society dedicated to animal welfare. They achieved this through a charity carnival, serving as a unique platform for spreading awareness and addressing the needs of voiceless creatures. Their motto, "Raising awareness for animal welfare one paw at a time," encapsulated their mission. SAFE HAVEN

The Rotaract Club of SLIIT, known for its commitment to moral values, embraced the challenge with reverence. The words of Anthony Douglas, "If animals could speak, mankind would weep," resonated with them. They opened an adoption stall from 10:00 AM onwards, allowing innocent puppies to find forever homes. A grooming station, overseen by a veterinarian, ensured the animals' well-being. A ball pit area provided dogs with a space to play and enjoy life. Additionally, they had organized engaging activities, including a "Best Picture with Dog" competition and a "Paw Print" activity to create lasting memories with their pets. These efforts resulted in the success of Project Safe Haven, raising awareness for animals' needs and making a positive impact. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Rotaract Club for organizing this project and pledge to uphold these noble principles in the future. The beach clean-up demonstrates the power of collective action and individual impact united by a common goal. As Rethink Trash continues its environmental mission, it transforms beaches while fostering a mindset shift toward responsible waste management. Each cleanup reinforces the notion that rethinking waste contributes to preserving the natural beauty of our island and, by extension, our shared planet. Christmas for Everyone Christmas is a magical time of happiness and joy, filled with bright lights all around. But the Christmas spirit matters not if it doesn’t reach everyone. In their philanthropic spirit, the members of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT have decided to take it upon themselves to extend the reach of Christmas joy in this jolly season to make sure that Christmas is for absolutely everyone. On the 27th of December, the dedicated team of altruists embarked on a mission to spread joy to the St. Blaise Church in the city of Moratuwa. Facilitated by the connection with the father of St. Anthony's Church, they reached out to over 30 underprivileged families in the area. In a heartwarming gesture, they presented them with gifts, which included stationery such as CR books, rulers, pencils, lunch boxes and water bottles for the children of the families. The team continued to stay with the kids, playing fun games with them. They even made sure to gift the winners with chocolates and candy boxes.

Christmas should be a time of joy, and that goes for everyone, regardless of who you are and what your financial situation is. And most importantly no matter where they are from, all children of the should be able to feel magic of the Christmas, the season of joy but also hope. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without being for everybody, and such is the true spirit of the season of giving. Penned by: Rtr. Aditha Abeynayake EDITORIAL MEMBER 2023-24
