Port Houston at Mid-Year: Cargo Up 24%

Port Houston Executive Director Roger Guenther provided a mid-year cargo report to the Port Commission of the Port
of Houston Authority during its regular monthly meeting on August 2. “We’re at the halfway point of 2022, and Port
Houston business is strong across the board,” he said. “Total tonnage across all the public facilities is up 24% year-to-
date.”

Guenther noted that general cargo tonnage through June was double
last year’s volume. “Import steel is at levels we haven’t seen in nearly a
decade,” he said, as the public general cargo facilities recorded 2.7
million tons through June. Port Houston’s public container terminals
additionally handled 1.9 million twenty-foot-equivalent units through
June, an increase of 18%.

Written By: Sandra Ramirez
American Foundation For Suicide Prevention

Pasadena Out of the Darkness Walk Chair
Team Paul and Tory

My name is Sandra Ramirez and I am an advocate for suicide prevention/awareness and am hosting our 2nd
annual Out of the Darkness walk in Pasadena, TX on September 24th, 2022 and your sponsorship can help save
lives.

AFSP is an organization that has been working tirelessly in the field of suicide prevention. The four key areas being
research, education and prevention, advocacy and public policy and support to those affected by suicide loss.

My personal loss is why I advocate today!

You see, years ago I was living my life and SUICIDE never crossed my mind, UNTIL I lost my youngest son Tory in 2009.
Not every death by suicide is a prolonged mental illness, he was an outgoing, popular and loved typical teenager.
We didn’t realize there were signs but we also had no idea what to look for. He ended his life and we were left
behind to wonder “Why didn’t I see something was wrong” “What could I have done differently” and these are all
feelings of guilt loved ones are left to deal with after suicide.

Suicide can sometimes cause a domino effect after loss, as survivors sometimes feel alone in their grief because
SUICIDE has always been such a taboo subject. My other son Paul was with me when we found his brother Tory
and afterwards he dealt with PTSD and depression. His fight for life ended on October 17, 2013 when he made
the decision he could no longer live with the nightmares, pain and depression. My efforts to get him help were
unsuccessful. He, like many, will not get the help they need because of the stigma attached to mental health care.
This needs to end, our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

The fact that many families can be spared my pain
is why I support AFSP in their endeavors to raise
awareness about suicide prevention/awareness
and mental health services in our area. We will have
many mental health resources and information at the
walk. This walk is a way for grieving families to build
connections with others who are going through the
same loss. It is a way for those who are struggling to
know that they are not alone and that sometimes not
being ok, is actually ok. It’s knowing that there is help
available, you are never alone and most importantly
SUICIDE should never be an option.

Please CLICK HERE to learn more about and register
for the Out of the Darkness Walk on September 24th
at Burke Crenshaw Park.
