Continued from Pg. 1

I must admit that I thought chamber activities slowed down in the summer, but your
chamber is going strong. I hope you are regularly visiting the Home Page calendar
on the website to make sure that you do not miss a single opportunity to participate
in events and to help make your company or organization more visible in our
community.
Two things that I am particularly excited about are our next two Membership
Luncheons. The August 22nd luncheon will provide an education update with Dr.
Brenda Hellyer representing San Jacinto College and Dr. DeeAnn Powell representing
PISD. We will also celebrate the cultural contributions of our 2017 Artist of the Year,
Mr. James Guthrie from Thrivent Financial.
The September luncheon will provide a legislative update after the special session
called by Governor Greg Abbott. We received confirmations from Senator Sylvia
Garcia, Representative Briscoe Cain, and Representative Dennis Paul confirming they
will be available to take part in a panel discuss on September 14th.
Please monitor your email for more information regarding both luncheons.
I heard it said recently that chamber membership is likened to a gym membership.
If you want results, you must show up! This is one situation where you get what you
pay for when you actively engage. I hope to see you soon.

“We are all precious in His sight.”

Sincerely,

Kevin Jeter

A Letter From the President:

Hello Members & Friends,
Summer if officially here and there are lots of exciting opportunities for
you to get involved with your chamber in the coming months because
before we know it will be back to school and the fall festivities will begin.
Before school begins there are several opportunities to partner with our
education institutions whether to promote your business to more than
700 community members or engage with providing valuable skills for our
future workforce, there is something for you.
Registration is open for our 2017 Partners in Education Business Expo
taking place on August 17 at the Pasadena Convention Center. If you’re
looking for an chance to network with the business community, engage
with PISD faculty and staff and meet and greet with the community at
large then be sure to secure your booth today! Thank you to those
members who have already registered, remember the earlier you reserve
the more publicity you receive leading up to the event.
Recently at our Pasadena Hispanic Business Council Breakfast I had the opportunity to present information
on how you can engage to provide opportunities for students through internships, mentoring, community
service projects or simply speaking about your profession in a classroom setting. The benefits to the
employer, your employees and the students are invaluable. If you are interested in learning how you can
connect and provide an experience for our future generations then please contact me today.
You can also make plans to join us for our fall membership luncheons which will start back in August where
we will hear an update from Pasadena ISD & San Jacinto College directly as they kick off another successful
school year. We will also celebrate our 2017 Artist of the Year James Guthrie for his time and efforts giving
back to the more than 15 non-profit organizations that he serves.
I would also like to express my congratulations to team member Suzette McDowell for her achievements
and recognition at the Texas Chamber of Commerce annual conference where we were named a media
excellence award winner! This accomplishment named your Pasadena Chamber as 1st place for our monthly
newsletters and 2nd place for our social media campaigns across all Texas chambers our size.
On behalf of the board of directors, the Pasadena Chamber would also like to congratulate all of the newly
elected city council members and Mayor Jeff Wagner. We look forward to our continued partnership and
working together to accomplish more.
Your chamber is looking forward to engaging with each one of you in the coming months. I invite you to

Pasadena Chamber of Commerce | Chambergram July, 2017

Imagine back to the day you were just breaking out into the work
field. Some of us were excited to embark on a new journey; others
of us were terrified of the idea of being let out into the wild
unkowns of the “real world”. With no parents to guide our every
move and friends further away, we had to face the challenges of
beginning a new career, meeting new people, or moving to a new
place on our own. But what if you had your very own mentor or
buddy to help you get acclimated to that new job or city. Someone
who could show you the ropes, introduce you to people who could help you get to where you needed to go, or even
teach you how to cultivate your learned skills?

Well, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce realizes the importance of having such a person in your corner, especially
if you are an owner of a new business, a new member to the chamber or city, or a young professional. Mentoring
is not a new concept. However, the benefits of having a mentorship program within the chamber of commerce, will
bring new opportunities and build new relationships that otherwise may have never happen; hence the reason
Member2Member Mentoring was created.

Member2Member Mentoring offers chamber members the platform to connect one-on-one with other professionals
in order to better navigate the chamber world or to collaborate as a pair on topics relating to professional and
personal development. The goal is to provide a career development and community involvement strategy where
mentors facilitate the development of learners by sharing known resources, expertise, values, skills, and
perspectives.

While there are obvious benefits for mentees which include the opportunity to build long lasting personal/
professional relationships; insight into the pros and cons of various career options; increased self-awareness and
self-discipline; constructive feedback and a sounding board for testing ideas and plans, there are benefits for
mentors as well. Mentors will experience increased chamber involvement; renewed enthusiasm for role as expert;
gain a different perspective of current business issues; increased awareness of personal biases, assumptions and
areas for improvement, and gain personal
fulfillment by investing in others.

Being involved in M2M Mentoring means
you will be matched by the Member
Services Coordinator and asked to commit
to attending the initial meet and greet event
and the celebratory year-end event. Periodic
events will be facilitated by the chamber to
potentially occur every other month.
Additional meetings, how often to get
together, and duration of each meeting will
be agreed upon by partners. Participants
are expected to typically meet 1-2 hours
per month and encouraged to use chamber
events as opportunities to connect and
engage with other members. M2M is free to
all Pasadena Chamber members; however, out of pocket expenses may be expected depending on meeting
preferences agreed upon by mentoring partners.

If you are interested in more information or participating in Member2Member as a mentor or a mentee please
contact, Kirby Gibbs, at [email protected] or call 281-487-7871. The expectations to participate are
reasonable and the program is inclusive to all members who wish to give back or grow professionally. We are excited
about this new program and the successes it is sure to bring, so sign up today!
