Message From the Chairman James Guthrie

Dear Chamber Members, Chairman 2018

As 2018 ends its time to reflect on the many
accomplishments of your Chamber. We worked
hard to create excellent opportunities for
networking and member engagement all year
long. All events, including our luncheons,
Business Expo, Theater Night, Taste of the
Town, our Gala and others were well organized
and most set records for attendance and
income over previous years. Thanks to our
wonderful staff led by Cristina, all activities
were entertaining and went off without a hitch.
They function very well as a team and deserve
our compliments on a job well done.

1 Pasadena Chamber of Commerce

Thanks to all Chamber members who supported the
Chamber throughout the year. Your participation is
necessary and greatly appreciated. I’m personally
heartened and grateful for your involvement in events
throughout the year. This is your Chamber and I hope
you feel we’ve met your expectations for membership
in the organization. I would also like to thank my wife,
Pam, and my daughter, Moriah, for all your help,
encouragement and support. God’s greatest gift is a
loving family.
It was a pleasure to work with the members of our board
of directors. What an excellent, qualified and
professional group of leaders they are. Thanks to each
of you for the time you took leading the Chamber, constantly pulling
together to create the quality year we’ve enjoyed.
Thank you, Kevin Jeter, 2017 Chairman, for your support. Kevin truly set the standard for
participation and support of Chamber staff throughout his term of service. Kevin was
always there when I needed help and encouragement. He showed me how to manage
situations but never told me how to manage them and for that I’m grateful.
Last week at the Annual Gala I passed the gavel to a man who needs no introduction, Mr.
Ken Phelps. Ken and his family are lifelong stalwarts in our community. I have no doubt
Ken will continue the process of lifting the Chamber to the next level. This past year Ken

and his team worked long hours
developing the new IMPACT Pasadena
leadership program for up and coming
leaders in our community and now he’ll
have the pleasure of presiding over the
results of their hard work. Ken, God’s
blessings and thank you for your
friendship!
The new year is here, and plans are in
place at the Chamber to help you
promote your business or organization
in the greater Pasadena Community.
It’s a year to look forward to and it is
my prayer each one of you find success,
health and happiness.

Best,

James Guthrie

2018 Citizen of the Year - Steve Cote

Since 1967 the Pasadena Chamber has recognized one
individual as the Citizen of the Year annually; someone who
exhibits a level of dedication and contribution to Pasadena
above and beyond the call of duty. We are pleased to name
Steve Cote as the 52nd honoree for his commitments to the
betterment of our community.
Our 2018 Citizen of the Year began his journey of success in
Pasadena schools, building forever friendships among his
classmates and earning the respect of friends and teachers
alike. After graduating from Deer Park High School, he went on
to attend San Jacinto College Central Campus and is a proud
alumni of the University of Houston.
He grew up in a family owned business developing an
unwavering work ethic and learning the true value of a dollar.
As a sales manager in the electronics industry, he traveled the
world but in 2004 the pull of home and the desire to be closer
to his growing family brought him back to Pasadena. He took
a risk and stepped into a new career path training under the
Phelps family at Phelps State Farm Insurance and in 2007 he
joined Brady Chapman Holland & Associates as a risk consultant
and is now the Shareholder/Sr. Vice President.
His time with BCH has been instrumental in his ability to access a need and create a solution that benefits
businesses, their employees and the economic vitality of our community. The desire to develop cohesive
solutions for the betterment of many, led him to public office. He ran a successful campaign and was
elected in 2009 as the city councilman for district G where he worked tirelessly for 6 years to support our
economy and to insure sustainable growth into the future.
Steve is deeply involved in giving of his time to numerous non-profit organizations including Economic
Alliance Houston Port Region, Associated Builders & Contractors and supporting Pasadena ISD through his
involvement on the McDonalds Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament and serving on the board for the
Pasadena ISD Education Foundation. Steve is known for his willingness to not only join, but for also serving
as Chairman or leadership in some capacity.
Steve is also currently serving as Chairman of the Pasadena Economic Development Corporation, the
nonprofit organization that directs economic development efforts for the city. Under Steve’s leadership the
board has spent significant time engaging with the community to understand its needs through a strategic
planning process. His experience on city council and professional background compliments his ability to
move forward together for the success of our community.
He and his wife Amy were married at First Baptist Church and remain active members along with their two
beautiful daughters Morgan and Meredith. Steve continues to live a life of integrity in business and in his
personal pursuits and we are grateful for his dedication to our city and its successful future.
Congratulations Steve! Pasadena is lucky to have you as an advocate and we appreciate all that you invest in
making Pasadena great.

On Thursday, December 6th we hosted our annual Volunteer Appreciation Membership Luncheon at D’gala Event
Center. At the event, we had the opportunity to celebrate a successful year and recognize those individuals who
went above and beyond during the year to support the Chamber. Volunteer award recipients were each voted on
and selected by their respected committee members. Staff members had the opportunity to recognize each of
their respective committees and took turns announcing the men and women who’s contributions led to a
successful 2018.
• Classic Club Member of the Year: Diane & John Edwards
• Cultural Arts Member of the Year: Greta Davis, Lonestar Promo Products
• Ambassador of the Year: Lauren Sistek, Home2 Suites by Hilton Houston/ Pasadena
• Committee Chair of the Year: Jeffrey Reich-Hale, Hilton Garden Inn Houston Hobby
• PHBC Member of the Year: Margie Pena, BakerRipley
• Volunteer of the Year: Lee Betancourt, AT&T Business
• Board Member of the Year: Ken Phelps, Phelps Insurance

We also had the opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women who serve our city as First Responders
protecting citizens everyday. These recipients were each selected by their departments.
• EMS of the Year: Carla Castio
• Firefighter of the Year: Joseph Dunne
• Police Officer of the Year: Chris Rock
At the event we celebrated our student interns who participated in the fall internship program: Marissa Belmares,
Yulissa Garza, Michele Gibson & Lesley Hurtado and presented them with their $500 scholarships. The chamber
is grateful to them for all they have done this semester, as they have been a tremendous asset to the organization
and absolutely helpful during our very busy fall season.
Without a doubt the event was a great opportunity to reminisce about a great year and show our appreciation to
all of our volunteers without whom our events and committees would not be possible.
