Penetrations in fire rated construction can allow spread of fire
from one firecell to another if they are not correctly fire
rated. Poorly installed penetrations can compromise the
fire resistance rating and in turn could compromise the
health and life safety of building occupants.

This book offers systems to fire rate penetrations
through GIB® Fire Rated Systems. At the rear of the
book there are pages outlining non GIB® proprietary

solutions covering a range of suppliers, products
and/or systems.

Winstone Wallboards Ltd accepts no liability if
the systems are not used in accordance with
instructions contained in this book. Substitution of
specified or recommended components with alter-
native brands can compromise the performance of
the system dramatically.

Winstone Wallboards Ltd accepts no liability for the
Proprietary System listings. It has listed these
products solely on the basis of information provided
by the manufacturer at the time of publication
about their suitability for installation in specific GIB®
Fire Rated systems. Winstone Wallboards has not
independently verified this information and accepts
no responsibility for its accuracy.

Introduction

The New Zealand Building Code
Service penetrations through fire rated construction covered by Building Consent must be fire
stopped by validated methods in accordance with the requirements of the NZBC. A method
of compliance with the NZBC is given in the Approved Documents for fire, Acceptable Solution
C/AS1.
In order to meet the provisions of the NZBC, certain construction elements are required to
provide a Fire Resistance Rating (FRR). This includes walls, floor/ceilings, columns, beams,
doors and windows. The FRR can arise out of a need to prevent internal fire spread (F rating),
or to prevent structural collapse close to a relevant boundary and fire spread through external
walls (S rating).
General Notes
This publication gives details of the installation of penetrations through GIB® Fire Rated Systems.

• The continuity and effectiveness of fire separations must be maintained around
penetrations. Where a difference exists between the FRR of the penetration seal or closure
and the FRR of the GIB® Fire Rated system, the lower FRR governs.

• All the products or systems listed are suitable for installation into GIB® Fire Rated Systems.
They have been tested or assessed by the Building Research Association of New Zealand
(BRANZ), or other registered testing laboratory.

• Penetration options (pages 4-15) have been illustrated and specified in detail. Testing of
these systems has been carried out by Winstone Wallboards Limited.

• Proprietary systems (pages 16-24) are presented as general descriptions covering ranges
of products or systems. Testing of the systems has been carried out by the systems
supplier. Specific details of systems and required installation details, must be
obtained from the listed supplier. The list does not exclude other proprietary
systems and is a list of systems available at the time of publication that provided
evidence that they were suitable for installation in specific GIB® Fire Rated Systems.

• The proprietary products and systems listed have been examined for installation only with
the GIB® Fire Rated System listed, and are not necessarily suitable for installation in other
systems of higher FRR.

• Suppliers of penetration seals are continually extending their product and systems range
and should be contacted directly for details of new products since date of this publication.

• Where products or systems are listed as suitable for installation into loadbearing elements,
they must be installed so that all loads are carried by the loadbearing element, and no load
is imposed on the penetration or closure.

• The specifications for the GIB® Systems referred to are as given in Winstone Wallboard’s
literature “GIB® Fire Rated Systems,” 2001.

Flush boxes may be installed into vertical fire separations using fire stop baffles constructed as
illustrated below. The following other conditions apply:
• Back to back flush boxes are not permitted in the same stud cavity.
• Either steel or plastic flush or surface mounted flush boxes may be used.
• Up to two single width flush boxes or one double width flush box is permitted per

Recessed Light Fittings

Suitable for all GIB® Floor/Ceiling or Universal Ceilings with a
(120)/120/120 FRR or less.

General Installation of Recessed Light Fittings
Installation methods vary in detail but in general there are 4 basic options:

Option A Light fitting module is designed to fit inside a suspended metal grid which is also
used to support ceiling tiles (which may be interchangeable with the lighting
Option B module).
Option C Light fitting fits into a neat hole in the ceiling lining and is supported by fittings
Option D which rest on the linings.
Light fitting fits into a neat hole in the ceiling lining and is supported by spring
fittings which press against the edge of the hole.
Light fitting fits into an aperture which is framed out and the light fitting module is
fixed to solid framing.

Construction Methods

Method 1 is shown in Figure 8, and is suitable for light fittings installed according to installation
Option A.
The method involves the suspension of a non-fire rated suspension ceiling (into which the light
fittings are installed) below an approved GIB® fire rated ceiling or floor/ceiling. This method may
suit situations where the ceiling has numerous light fittings or where the ceiling void requires
adequate ventilation due to the heat output of the light fittings within the void.
Method 2 is shown in Figures 9 and 10 and is suitable for light fittings installed according to
installation Options B and C.
The method involves construction of a fire rated recess between the joists to which a fire rated
suspended ceiling is fixed.
The method may suit installations where there are isolated light fittings. The width of the void
(and therefore of the light fitting) is restricted due to the 600mm maximum joist spacing.
Method 3 is shown in Figure 11, and suits installation Option D. This differs from Method 2 in
that the light fitting module is securely fixed to the timber framing.
The method involves construction of a fire rated recess between joists which directly support
the ceiling linings.

Ventilation

Adequacy of air movement or ventilation is important for the correct functioning of certain
lamps or light fittings. The supplier/manufacturer of the light fittings must be consulted to
determine appropriate ventilation requirements.

Plastic Pipes in Walls and Floor/Ceiling Systems

Plastic pipes melt at high temperatures and penetrations must be carefully detailed at the
building design stage.
There are no generic options available for plastic pipe penetrations through GIB® Fire Rated
Systems. For proprietary products and systems refer to page 16-19 of this publication.

Metal Pipes in Walls - Pipe Penetrates One Side of Fire
Separation Only

Suitable for all GIB® Fire Rated Walls with a (120)/120/120 FRR or less.

Metal pipes may penetrate one side only of vertical fire separations provided fire stop baffles
are constructed as detailed below. The following other conditions apply:
• Maximum pipe diameter is 80mm.
• Penetrations on opposite sides of the wall within the same stud cavity are not permitted.
• Only one pipe penetration per stud cavity is permitted.
• Copper and Brass pipe penetrations in walls rated (60)/60/60 require a minimum 16mm

baffle thickness. For all other ratings and materials baffle thickness may equal lining thickness.

Fire Stopping of Metal Pipes Through GIB® Fire Rated Walls

General Requirements

Metal pipe penetrations can be formed through 2-way symmetrical GIB® Fire Rated Walls using
the system described below.

The following conditions apply:
• The GIB® Fire Rated Wall must be a symmetrical two-way system
• One-way universal walls are excluded
• The pipe material must be steel, copper or brass
• The pipe diameter must not exceed 150mm
• The pipe wall thickness must not be less than 1.5mm

Fire stopping at the wall junction

Metal pipe penetrations must be fire stopped at the wall junction using the method (cavity
insulation) as described below.

Additional requirements

Additional requirements apply depending on the required FRR and the pipe material. The
requirement for ceramic fibre lagging or a radiation guard is to ensure that the pipe does not
conduct heat to the unexposed side of the wall which could ignite combustibles and cause fire
spread (insulation criterion).
