GERRY LEONARDO

Born and raised in Davao, Gerry Leonardo is a prolific visual artist known
for his kinetic, mixed-medium sculptures that materialize as a layered
amalgamation of history, folklore, and a sense of sentimentality that
vividly bridges his ideas on identity and community into his works.

His foray into the visual arts was paved by his love of toys and toy making.
Leonardo would always make reference to his favorite line which still
guides him in his artistic pursuits: “The creative adult is the child who
survived”.

Already exhibiting creative talents at a young age, Leonardo migrated to
Luzon where he began his art education at the Philippine High School for
Arts (PHSA) in Los Baños, Laguna. For the next 35 years until the present,
he continues to serve his alma mater as a visual arts professor and an art
education advocate.

Upon his graduation from PHSA where he received the Leadership and
Distinction in the Visual Arts Award, he furthered his studies in sculpture
at the University of the Philippines Diliman under the late National Artist
for the Visual Arts Napoleon Abueva. He was a UP-PCCA Outstanding
Student-Artist.

The artist continued with his learning and explorations with the Monbukagakusho scholarship (formerly Monbusho)
from the Japanese government. He took his master’s degree at the Kyoto Seika University where he received its Most
Outstanding Graduate.

Upon his return to the country in the mid 1990’s, Leonardo created a series of “surreal human-form pieces” from found
objects and held together by wires for which he received renown. He won the Grand Prize for sculpture from the Art
Association of the Philippines (AAP), and several other awards.

He received the Thirteen Artists Awards from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 2000. He was likewise selected
from amongst global applicants in the residency programs of the Vermont Studio Center and the Headlands Center of the
Arts in 2000 and 2011 respectively.

Leonardo continues to do commissioned works, and produces for solo exhibitions in the Philippines and abroad. He has been
doing the Cinemalaya trophy since the festival started in 2005.

THE 2022 BALANGHAI TROPHY

As the distance of the pandemic turbulence falls further behind us, the August launch of the 18th
edition of Cinemalaya signifies the prospects of basking again in the sun of artistry and creation —
the thesis of the 2022 Balanghai Design. It is once again a celebration of life, renewal, and growth.

The changes in this year’s design are reflected in the voluminous sails that feature positively
charged leaf elements unfurling over the original leaf-leitmotif sail.

The leaves are more exuberant and thick, graciously moving up as if to engulf the spring of new
life offered by a newly liberated environment. The consistent attempt to achieve an animated
character supports the festival’s objective to rekindle the festive atmosphere typified by pre-
pandemic seasons.

To contextualize the trophy design within a defining era, the 2022 trophy endeavors to embody the
bold blaze of artistry, creativity, and creation through turmoil and confusion. Just as it transforms
to echo the voice of the times, the Balanghai Trophy also stands as an oscillating vestige of history
by way of retaining the crux of its original form from when it was first created, and in the process
valiantly continuing the tradition of handcrafted art.
