/20 Listening to Sodawala’s tick-tocking heart, Hakeem found his pulse was two beats apart.

/20 As Hakeem sahib reached for his white pepper antidote, He felt a bubble race all the way up his throat.

/20 Hic hic hic! Oh my, oh dear. I’ll hold my breath, I’ll pull my ear. His hiccups came and went, This was a most unusual event. Hic hic hic!

/20 Examining Machhiwali’s pale yellow eye, Hakeem sahib wrote out a nuska for rye. “Hold your breath, pull your ear.” Oh my, oh dear. Hic hic hic!

/20 Mithaiwala showed up with a wart on his chest. The Hakeem said a haldi poultice would work best. “Hold your breath, pull your ear.” Hic hic hic! Oh my, oh dear.

/20 Snap. Crackle. Pop! Keep calm. Hakeem sahib was setting the bone in Sabziwala’s arm. “Hold your breath, pull your ear.” Oh my, oh dear. Hic hic hic

/20 Little Munna came crying with a tummy ache, “Ajwain and saunf for you, and no more cake!” “Hold your breath, pull your ear.” Oh my, oh dear. Hic hic hic!

/20 As the hic-hic-hiccuping Hakeem locked up for the day, He was surprised to see…

/20 his patients in the way! With colourful platters of food, each swore To have a foolproof remedy of yore. Machhiwali had cooked a fiery red stew, With spicy fish roasted on the barbeque. Sodawala had made a special lemonade, Brimming with fizz and pomegranate.

/20 Mithaiwala had brought a basket of roat, Crunchy and sweet to coat the throat. Sabziwala got karela by the kilogram, Something bitter to push down the diaphragm.

/20 As they argued as to which cure was best, Out jumped a ghost, stirring unrest! Machhiwali screamed, Sodawala jumped in fear, Hic-hic, said the Hakeem loud and clear. Hakeem sahib pulled off the white sheet, And Munna beat a hasty retreat. “Why? Oh, why this silly horseplay?” “Amma says a good fright will scare the hiccups away!”

/20 But wait, where did Hakeem sahib disappear? Wasn’t he just… umm… right here? Everyone peeked inside an open door, Where Hakeem sahib’s family sat cross-legged upon the floor.

/20 Hand on his heart, he said, “Thank you, friends, for your kindness. I would now like you all to join us.” And, as if on cue, they all knew what to do. They put down their platters and sat cross-legged, too.

/20 Begum, Faria and Raheem brought cups and plates, And the family handed everyone some dates. As the azaan rang out from the east, They dived into the waiting feast.

/20 They all waited with bated breath, As Hakeem sahib let out a… Great... Big…

/20 BELCH! Hic
