Things to bear in mind
Please make sure all stone surface for any kind of stone eg. Porcelain or
Natural Stone is cleaned thoroughly prior to applying simply joint.
After Simply Joint has been applied, please take note of outdoor
temperature as this can delay the curing time. Clean all sand and excess
resin from the surface of the stone after 30-45 minutes. In hotter conditions
this may be reduced to 15-20 minutes.
You can apply a second light spray of water and remove with a soft brush.
Please ensure no one walks on the paved area for a minimum of 24 hours after application and whilst
carrying out the jointing compound application clean footwear must be worn to avoid staining on the
paving. Videos can be found on our Youtube Page.
We also do a pre ready-mix Simply brush in by Joint it available in 3 colours – Black, Midgrey or Black.
123
After Care Simply Joint Sealant is a ready-to-apply acrylic sealer which is
tough, durable and highly aesthetic improvements for any kind of
Sealant paving.
Patio Cleaner Please make sure Sealant is applied in bone dry conditions
without any slightest hint of damp or moisture. Sealant should
only be applied after 10-12 weeks or even longer of laying slabs so
it gives time for any efflorescence/salts to come off the slabs.
Key Features are: Enhances paving colours, Brings old paving
alive, Easy to apply by sprayer or roller, Adds profit to new or old
installations, Resists oil and stain penetration, Inhibits weed and
algae growth. Available in 5 L and 25 L tubs.
Simply Joint Patio Cleaner is the most efficient way to kill moss
and algae and will even remove the most stubborn black lichen
spots from paving.
This is a powerful product and caution must be exercised when
using near plants or vegetation. It is harmful to fish and aquatic
organisms. Please read instructions carefully before use.
Diluted Patio Cleaner can can be applied as part of a quarterly
maintenance schedule for paving to keep moses, algae and lichen
at bay.
Primer Bianco Cream
Simply Joint Primer suitable for Natural Stone or Porcelain. A white
liquid which is used as a Primer to increase work ability, water
resistance and bonding characteristics.
It’s optional for Natural Stone but mandatory on all Porcelain
paving its designed to applied on back of the slabs to give the
adhesiveness during the laying process.

Laying Your Patio
Tools Needed
• A shovel
• Pick Axe
• Rubber mallet/dead blow
• String line
• Spirit level
• Pointing trowel
Appropriate Safety Precaution PPE should be used and can be identified doing a simple risk
assessment and method statement. If excavating, it is good practice to dig small test holes or use
cable avoidance tools to locate services. Also, it is a good practice to do a visual inspection for any
signs of services within the designated area.
Construction
Ground Preparations for Natural Stone or Porcelain Patio are very much the same. Constructions
components consist of:
• Paving Course
• Bedding Course
• Sub base
• Sub grade
Sub Grade
Recommended practice to allow for a minimum of 150 mm for a complete construction patio. This
may need to be slightly deeper if ground conditions have poor weight bearing capacity.
Sub Grade
If you are laying directly next to a house then the finished patio should be at least 150mm below the
damp proof course. So in essence, dig out the area to a minimum depth of 300mm below the damp
proof course.
It’s good working practice to compact the surface of the subgrade with either static or vibratory
compact equipment. To ensure that water does not collect on the paving, the install needs to have a
fall of 1 in 60, which means one centimetre of fall for every 60 centimetres of width. Ideally falling to
storm drainage collection channels, planters and verges will suffice as long as they drain freely.
Sub Base & Geo Textile
Sometimes overlooked on its importance but choosing the correct sub base is essential in how the
patio will perform later on. Geotextile should be rolled out over the area of the patio and cut to the
cover the total area. A misconception is that it’s main function is to prevent weed growth. But it’s
main purpose is to stop the sub base migrating into the sub grade. Basically, preventing the chance
of settlement in the patio.
Flexible sub base DTp Type 1 granular sub base at a depth of 100 to 150 mm again dependant on
ground condition. Compacted with a Wacker plate or vibrating roller in 2 layers (half the depth of the
stone or 75 mm as rule of thumb). Rigid sub base would be a lean mix at a depth of around 100 mm.
Exchanging the geotextile for Dpm at this stage.
129
Bedding - Laying Porcelain
Full Wet Bed: best practice on type 1 subbase.
This procedure consists of placing the tiles onto a levelled-out bed of standard sand/cement mortar,
prepared to a wet consistency. The mortar bed needs to be a 5:1 or stronger mix of grit sand with
cement depth of 20mm to 40mm thick.
Thin bed Adhesive: best practice on concrete.
This method substitutes the sand cement for an outdoor grade polymer – modified cement. It is
common in hotter climate outdoors but not as a standard practice here in the U.K.
A (Bond Bridge) primer should be applied to the underside of the tiles prior to placement, to ensure
there is full adhesion between paving and bed. Tile Spacers are must in keeping the paving uniform.
Sawn Grey Bullnose
Bedding - Laying Natural Stone
Full Wet Bed: best practice on type 1 subbase.
This procedure consists of placing the natural stone flags onto a levelled-out bed of standard sand/
cement mortar, prepared to a wet consistency.
The mortar bed needs to be a 5:1 or stronger mix of grit sand with cement depth of 20mm to 40mm
thick. It is very much the same as laying porcelain.
A (Bond Bridge) primer should be applied to the underside of the slabs prior to placement to ensure
full adhesion between paving and bed. An SBR cement slurry will be more adequate on natural stone.
Jointing
2-part resin slurry for flexible sub base and rigid installs. Cement based rigid only. When using a 2-part
resin like Simply Joint or other. Every effort must be made to keep the paving clean and free of muck
transfer from boots, tools and machinery.
This can be achieved by using lots of clean water and taking time to clean up all surplus resin off on
completion of the installation. 2-part jointing is the fastest, cleanest and most stable form of jointing
and becoming a favourite with contractors in the U.K 131
General Information
Colours
Paving Stones Direct Products are a natural stone, due to the natural formation of the stone the
shade and colour throughout may vary in respect to the images shown in this brochure. The images
used throughout the brochure are used for reference purpose only, several may have been digitally
enhanced for printing purposes.
It is best practice to open the total packs being used for a project before yourself/landscaper starts
laying the paving this therefore ensures all the colours can be blended in naturally to create a
beautiful patio!
Sizes & Thickness
Calibrated products have undergone a grading process to achieve a thickness of 20mm, our handcut
range is split by hand and the thickness may vary from 15-25mm. All sizes and thickness on our
products are nominal and could vary by +/- 2 mm.
Maintenance
We highly recommend cleaning the patio on a regular basis using a stiff sweeping brush and warm
soapy water to remove any dirt and moss on the slabs. Your paving can be pressure washed but
extreme care must be taken as extensive pressure may cause damage to the jointing and the top
surface of paving.
Hard stains can be cleaned using specific cleaning agents in the market, however please check
their suitability and purpose with your specific product. Acids should NOT be used on Natural Stone
as this harms the colour and texture of the stone. Any strong coloured spillages should be cleaned
immediately with a wet cloth or suitable products to avoid long damage.
Health & Safety
Paving Stones Direct products are heavy and may be awkward to lift so extreme care is advised while
lifting and manoeuvring them, to the appropriate place.
Necessary clothes and accessories such as boots and gloves should be worn at all times. Safety
mask and eye protection are essentials when cutting the stone. More Health & Safety Guidelines and
instructions can be found on www.hse.gov.uk.
