are often contracted to didn’t.

- I arrived in London on Sunday → I didn’t arrive on Monday

Because “did” is a past form, the main verb doesn’t change.

- We didn’t live in Italy. Did is a past form so live is unchanged

We didn’t lived in Italy. Incorrect!

Interrogative
- Did you see Mr. Lee Young Jae yesterday?
- What did you do this morning?
- Where did you go last night?

• After practicing for a couple minutes, the person can release his or her hands while you

try to keep your balance.
• When you are ready, ride alone. But first lower the seat until you can sit on it and put both

feet flat on the ground.
• When you are confident you can put your feet on the pedals and coast for a few feet, try

not putting your feet down to train your sense of balance. Do this for 30-45 minutes or so,
until you have a good feel and some confidence about steering the bike.
• As you gain experience, raise the seat up so that only your toes can touch the ground while
you are seated. This is the more appropriate height for your seat.
• Finally, you have to practice.
• Once you can balance, pedal, start, and stop, you're a bicycle rider. Congratulations!

THE STORY OF THUMBELINA
Once upon a time . . . there lived a woman who had no children. She dreamed of having a
little girl, but time went by, and her dream never came true.
She then went to visit a witch, who gave her a magic grain of barley. She planted it in a
flower pot. And the very next day, the grain had turned into a lovely flower, rather like a tulip. The
woman softly kissed its half-shut petals. And as though by magic, the flower opened in full
blossom. Inside sat a tiny girl, no bigger than a thumb. The woman called her Thumbelina. For a
bed she had a walnut shell, violet petals for her mattress and a rose petal blanket. In the daytime,
she played in a tulip petal boat, floating on a plate of water. Using two horse hairs as oars,
Thumbelina sailed around her little lake, singing and singing in a gentle sweet voice.
Then one night, as she lay fast asleep in her walnut shell, a large frog hopped through a hole in the
window pane. As she gazed down at Thumbelina, she said to herself: "How pretty she is! She'd
make the perfect bride for my own dear son!"
She picked up Thumbelina, walnut shell and all, and hopped into the garden. Nobody saw her go
back at the pond, her fat ugly son, who always did as mother told him, was pleased with her choice.
But mother frog was afraid that her pretty prisoner might run away. So she carried Thumbellna out
to a water lily leaf in the middle of the pond.

"She can never escape us now," said the frog to her son. "And we have plenty of time to
prepare a new home for you and your bride." Thumbelina was left all alone. She felt so desperate.
She knew she would never be able to escape the fate that awaited her with the two horrid fat frogs.
All she could do was cry her eyes out. However, one or two minnows who had been enjoying the
shade below the water lily leaf, had overheard the two frogs talking, and the little girl's bitter sobs.
They decided to do something about it. So they nibbled away at the lily stem till it broke and drifted
away in the weak current. A dancing butterfly had an idea: "Throw me the end of your belt! I'll help
you to move a little faster!" Thumbelina gratefully did so, and the leaf soon floated away from the
frog pond.

But other dangers lay ahead. A large beetle snatched Thumbelina with his strong feet and
took her away to his home at the top of a leafy tree. "Isn't she pretty?" he said to his friends. But
they pointed out that she was far too different. So the beetle took her down the tree and set her free.
It was summertime, and Thumbelina wandered all by herself amongst the flowers and through the
long grass. She had pollen for her meals and drank the dew. Then the rainy season came, bringing
nasty weather. The poor child found it hard to find food and shelter. When winter set in, she
suffered from the cold and felt terrible pangs of hunger.

One day, as Thumbelina roamed helplessly over the bare meadows, she met a large spider
who promised to help her. He took her to a hollow tree and guarded the door with a stout web. Then
he brought her some dried chestnuts and called his friends to come and admire her beauty. But just
like the beetles, all the other spiders persuaded Thumbelina's rescuer to let her go. Crying her heart
out, and quite certain that nobody wanted her because she was ugly, Thumbelina left the spider's
house.

As she wandered, shivering with the cold, suddenly she came across a solid little cottage,
made of twigs and dead leaves. Hopefully, she knocked on the door. It was opened by a field
mouse.

"What are you doing outside in this weather?" he asked. "Come in and warm yourself."
Comfortable and cozy, the field mouse's home was stocked with food. For her keep, Thumbelina
did the housework and told the mouse stories. One day, the field mouse said a friend was coming to
visit them.

"He's a very rich mole, and has a lovely house. He wears a splendid black fur coat, but he's
dreadfully shortsighted. He needs company and he'd like to marry you!" Thumbelina did not relish
the idea. However, when the mole came, she sang sweetly to him and he fell head over heels in
love. The mole invited Thumbelina and the field mouse to visit him, but . . . to their surprise and
horror, they came upon a swallow in the tunnel. It looked dead. Mole nudged it was his foot, saying:
"That'll teach her! She should have come underground instead of darting about the sky all summer!"
Thumbelina was so shocked by such cruel words that later, she crept back unseen to the tunnel.
And every day, the little girl went to nurse the swallow and tenderly give it food.

In the meantime, the swallow told Thumbelina its tale. Jagged by a thorn, it had been unable
to follow its companions to a warmer climate.

"It's kind of you to nurse me," it told Thumbelina. But, in spring, the swallow flew away,
after offering to take the little girl with it. All summer, Thumbelina did her best to avoid marrying
the mole. The little girl thought fearfully of how she'd have to live underground forever. On the eve
of her wedding, she asked to spend a day in the open air. As she gently fingered a flower, she heard
a familiar song: "Winter's on its way and I'll be off to warmer lands. Come with me!" Thumbelina

quickly clung to her swallow friend, and the bird soared into the sky. They flew over plains and

him. Thumbelina eagerly said "yes", and sprouting tiny white wings, she became the Flower Queen!

Rapunzel

Once upon a time, there lived a man and a woman who always wished for a child, but could
not have one. These people had a little window at the back of their house from which a splendid
garden could be seen. The garden was full of the most beautiful flowers and herbs. It was,
however, surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared to go into it because it belonged to an witch,
who had great power and was feared by all the world.

One day the woman was standing by the window and looking down into the garden, when
she saw a bed which was planted with the most-tasty Rapunzel. It looked so fresh and green that
she longed for it and had the greatest desire to eat some. This desire increased every day. The
woman knew that she could not get any of it and grew more pale and miserable each day.

Her husband was worried about her and asked "What is wrong my dear?”. "Ah," she replied,
"if I can't eat some of the Rapunzel from the garden behind our house I think I shall die." The man,
who loved her, thought, "Sooner than let my lovely wife die, I will bring her some of the Rapunzel
myself, no matter what the cost."

In the twilight of the evening, he climbed over the wall into the garden of the witch, hastily
grabbed a handful of Rapunzel and took it to his wife. She at once made herself a salad and ate it
happily. She, however, liked it so much -- so very much, that the next day she longed for it three
times as much as before. If he was to have any rest, her husband must once more descend into the
garden. In the gloom of evening, therefore, he set out again; but when he had climbed over the wall
he was terribly afraid, for he saw the witch standing before him.

"How dare you," she said with angry look, "sneak into my garden and steal my Rapunzel
like a thief? You shall suffer for this!"
"Ah," the frightened husband answered, "please have mercy, I had to have the Rapunzel. My wife
saw it from the window and felt such a longing for it that she would have died if she had not got
some to eat."

Then the witch allowed her anger to be softened, and said to him, "If this is true, I will allow
you to take as much as you like, only I make one condition. You must give me the baby daughter
your wife will bring into the world; she shall be well treated, and I will care for it like a mother."
The man in his fear consented and when the baby was born the witch appeared at once, gave the
child the name of Rapunzel and took the baby away with her.

Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful child beneath the sun. When she was twelve years
old, the witch shut her into a tower, which lay in a forest. The tower had no stairs or doors, but only
a little window at the very top. When the witch wanted to go in, she stood beneath the window and
cried, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair."

Rapunzel had magnificent long hair, fine as spun gold, and when she heard the voice of the
witch she wound her braids round one of the hooks of the window, and then the hair fell down the
side of the tower and the witch climbed up by it.

After a year or two, it came to pass that the Prince rode through the forest and went by the
tower. He heard a song which was so lovely that he stood still and listened. This was Rapunzel
who in her loneliness passed her time singing. The Prince wanted to climb up to her, and looked for
the door of the tower, but none was to be found. He rode home, but the singing had so deeply
touched his heart, that every day he went out into the forest and listened to it.

Once when he was standing behind a tree listening to Rapunzel's song, he saw the witch
come and heard how she cried,

"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair."
Then Rapunzel let down the braids of her hair, and the witch climbed up to her.
"If that is the ladder by which one mounts, I will for once try my fortune," thought the Prince and
the next day when it began to grow dark, he went to the tower and cried,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair."
Immediately the hair fell down and the Prince climbed up.

At first Rapunzel was terribly frightened when a man such as her eyes had never seen, came
to her; but the Prince began to talk to her quite like a friend and told her that his heart had been so
stirred by her singing that it had let him have no rest. Then Rapunzel lost her fear, and when he
asked her if she would take him for her husband -- and she saw that he was kind and handsome, she
said yes, and laid her hand in his.

She said, "I will willingly go away with you, but I do not know how to get down. Bring a
bit of silk with you every time you come and I will weave a ladder with it. When that is ready I will
climb down and we shall escape together." They agreed that until that time he should come to her
every evening, for the old woman came by day.

The witch knew nothing of this, until once Rapunzel said in her distraction, "Oh my, you are
so much heavier when you climb than the young Prince."
"Ah! You wicked child," cried the witch "What do I hear thee say! I thought I had separated you
from around the world but you have deceived me."

In her anger she clutched Rapunzel's beautiful hair, seized a pair of scissors -- and snip, snap
-- cut it all off. Rapunzel's lovely braids lay on the ground but the witch was not through. She was
so angry that she took poor Rapunzel into a desert where she had to live in great grief and misery.
The witch rushed back to the tower and fastened the braids of hair which she had cut off, to the
hook of the window, and when the Prince came and cried,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair,"

She let the hair down. The Prince climbed to the window, but he did not find his dearest
Rapunzel above, but the witch, who gazed at him with a wicked and venomous look.
"Aha!" she cried mockingly, "You've come for Rapunzel but the beautiful bird sits no longer
singing in the nest; the cat has got it and will scratch out your eyes as well. Rapunzel is banished
and you will never see her again!"

The Prince was beside himself and in his despair he fell down from the tower. He escaped
with his life, but the thorns into which he fell pierced his eyes. Then he wandered quite blind about
the forest, ate nothing but roots and berries and did nothing but weep over the loss of his dearest
Rapunzel.

In this way, the Prince roamed in misery for some months and at length came to the desert
where the witch had banished Rapunzel. He heard a voice singing and it seemed so familiar to him
that he went towards it. When he approached, Rapunzel knew him and fell into his arms and wept.
Two of her tears fell on his eyes and the Prince could see again. He led her to his kingdom where
he was joyfully received, and they lived for a long time afterwards, happy and contented.

Based On The Story By Hans Christian Andersen

Once upon a time there was a woman who longed to have a little girl of her own to love and
care for. As time passed, and she had no children, she became very sad. Then one day she heard of a
wise old woman who could help, and she went to see her. The wise old woman smiled. “Take this

took the seed home and planted it. Soon green shoots appeared, and then a flower bud grew
between them.

At last the bud opened out into a beautiful yellow flower. And right in the centre was a little
girl, no bigger than the woman’s thumb. The woman looked down at the little girl. “How pretty you
are!” she said. “You are so small and dainty, I’m going to call you Thumbelina.” The woman was
happy to have a little girl at last, and she took good care of Thumbelina. Thumbelina was happy too.

She sang songs in her soft, clear voice as she played on the kitchen table. At night she slept
in a bed made from a tiny walnut shell. Then one day a big toad heard Thumbelina’s singing and
hopped in through the window. “What a pretty wife you would make for my son!” she said. And
she carried Thumbelina away to the stream where she lived. The toad left the tiny girl all along on a
lily leaf and went off to find her son. Thumbelina didn’t want to marry an ugly toad at all, but she
didn’t know how she could escape. After a while some friendly fish came swimming by. “Please
help me,” Thumbelina begged. “The toad wants me to marry her son. I must find a way to escape!”

All the fish felt sorry for Thumbelina. So they spent the whole day nibbling through the
stem of the lily leaf, and at last Thumbelina was able to float away. As she drifted down the stream,
Thumbelina met a beautiful butterfly. It took her to a pleasant wood where she could make a home
for herself. Thumbelina was happy in the wood eating the nuts and berries that she found, and
playing with her friends the butterflies. But soon the days grew colder. When winter came, it was
harder for Thumbelina to find food. Her friends the butterflies disappeared, and she was alone.

Then one day Thumbelina met a friendly field-mouse who was just going into her little
house. “I’m so hungry,” Thumbelina said. “Please can you help me?” The field-mouse took pity on
the girl. “Of course,” she said. “You can stay with me in my warm house and share my food.”
Thumbelina lived happily with the field-mouse for a long time. But one day the field-mouse said, “I
can’t keep you here much longer. Why don’t you marry my friend the mole, who lives next door?
He has a much bigger house than mine. And he will look after you next winter.” Thumbelina did
not want to marry the mole. He lived under the ground and knew nothing of the sunny world
outside.

Next day the mole visited Thumbelina. “Please come and see where I live,” he said.
Thumbelina did not want to hurt the mole’s feelings, so she followed him into the tunnel that led to
his dark underground home. “Be careful,” said the mole. “There is a dead bird just here.”
Thumbelina saw that the bird was a swallow. He was not dead, just very cold and weak.
Thumbelina felt sorry for the swallow. She covered him with dried leaves and grass to keep him
warm.

Thumbelina looked after the swallow all through the long, cold winter. By summer he was
strong and well and ready to go back to his own home. Thumbelina said goodbye to the swallow as
he flew off with his friends. She was happy that he was well, but she knew that she would miss him.

And she was sad to think that before the next winter came, she would have to marry the mole and
live underground.

When summer ended, Thumbelina looked up at the sky for the last time with tears in her
eyes. Birds were flying overhead, and suddenly one of them swooped down to her. It was the
swallow she had saved! “I am going to a warm country,” he told her. “Come with me.”
Thumbelina was overjoyed. She climbed onto the swallow’s back and flew with him to a faraway
land where it was always summer. This land was full of flowers. And inside every one lived a tiny
person, just like Thumbelina! “We are the Flower People,” they said, “and this is your true home.
We will call you Maia.” Maia loved her new home. Before long, she married the handsome prince
of the Flower People and lived happily ever after.

Three Little Pigs

Once there was a mother pig who had three little pigs. She did not have enough to keep
them, so she sent them out to seek their fortunes.

The first little pig had not gone far when he met a man with a bundle of straw. The little pig
said to him, “Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house.” This the man did, and soon the
little pig had built a house with it.

Just after the house was built, along came a wolf. He knocked at the door of the little pig’s
house and called, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in!” But the little pig answered, “No, no! Not by
the hair of my chinny chin chin!”

Then the wolf said, “I’ll huff and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in!” So he huffed and he
puffed until he blew the house in, and ate up that little pig.

The second little pig had not gone far when he met a man carrying a bundle of sticks on his
shoulders.

The little pig said to him, “Please, man, give me those sticks to build me a house.”
This the man did, and soon the little pig had built a house with them.
Just after the house was built, along came the wolf. He knocked at the door of the little pig’s house
and said, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in!” But the little pig answered, “No, no! Not by the hair
of my chinny chin chin!”

Then the wolf said, “I’ll huff and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in!” So he huffed and he
puffed and he blew the house in, and ate up that little pig.

The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks. The little pig said to him, “Please, man,
give me those bricks to build me a house.” This the man did, and soon the little pig had built a
house with them.

Just after the house was built, along came the wolf. He knocked at the door of the little pig’s
house and said, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in!” But the little pig answered, “No, no! Not by

Then the wolf said, “I’ll huff and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in!” So the wolf huffed
and he puffed and he puffed and he huffed, and he huffed and he puffed, but he couldn’t blow this
third little pig’s house down.
When he found that with all his huffing and puffing he could not blow this little pig’s house
down, he said, “Little pig, I know where there is a field of fine turnips.

“Where?” the little pig asked eagerly.
“Over in Mr. Smith’s home field. And if you will be ready tomorrow morning I will call you
and we will go together and get some for our dinner.” “Thank you,” replied the little pig. “I will be
ready when you come for me. What time do you want to go?”
“Oh, I’ll come for you at six o’clock.”
Now the little pig rose at five o’clock and was back home with his turnips when about six
o’clock the wolf came and said, “Little pig, are you ready?” “Ready?” exclaimed the little pig.
“Why, I have been there and back home again, and I have a fine pot of turnips already
cooked for my dinner!”

The wolf was very angry, but thinking that he would be equal to the little pig, he said,
“Little pig, I know where there is a very nice apple tree.”

“Where?” the little pig asked eagerly.
“Down at Merry Garden,” replied the wolf. “And if you will not deceive me this time, I will
come for you at five o’clock tomorrow morning and we will go down there together and get some
nice apples.” “I will be ready,” replied the little pig.
The little pig got up early the next morning, and was on his way by four o’clock. But this
time he had to go much farther, and besides, he had to climb the tree to get the apples. Just as he
was ready to jump down, he spied the wolf.
“What, little pig!” said the wolf. “You here before me? Are they nice apples?”
“Oh, yes,” replied the little pig. “Here, I will throw one down for you.”

Now the little pig threw that apple so far that while the wolf was going after it, he jumped
down to the ground and ran home with his basket of apples as fast as he was able.
He dashed into the house, slammed the door, and locked it. Then he sat down to rest.
Of course the wolf was again very angry, but the next day he came to the little pig’s house once
more and said, “Little pig, there’s a fair over at Shanklin’ this afternoon. Will you go there with
me?” “Oh, yes,” replied the little pig. “What time shall I expect you?”

“At three,” answered the wolf.
That afternoon the little pig went off before three o’clock, just as usual, got to the fair,

bought a butter churn, and was going home with it when he spied the wolf coming.
This time the little pig was terribly frightened. He didn’t know what to do, so he got into the

churn to hide. But as he was climbing in, the churn started to roll round and round. Down the hill it
rolled, faster and faster, with the little pig still in it. This frightened the wolf so much that he ran
home, forgetting all about going to the fair at Shanklin that afternoon.

The next day he went to the little pig’s house again and told him how frightened he had been
while going to the fair. The little pig laughed, and said, “Ha, ha! I frightened you that time! I had
gone to the fair and had bought a butter churn there; and when I saw you coming I climbed inside
the churn and rolled down the hill.”

Then the wolf was very angry indeed. He vowed that he would eat up that little pig — that
he would climb up on the roof of the little pig’s house and go down the chimney after him.
When the little pig heard the wolf on the roof of his house and saw what he was about, he made a
blazing fire in his fireplace, filled a big pot with water, and hung it over the fire.
Just as the wolf was coming down the chimney, the little pig lifted the lid off the big pot of boiling
water, and in fell the wolf. And then the little pig quickly popped on the cover again, and had the
wolf for supper.

And that is how it came about that this little pig lived happily in his snug little brick house
ever after.

The Black Cat

I don’t expect you to believe the story I am about to write. But in order to die peacefully, I
must tell my story.

My wife and I loved pets. One of my wife’s favorite pets was Pluto, the cat. Pluto was a
very clever black cat.

One day I came home very drunk. I was in a very bad temper. For some reasons, Pluto
made me angry. In a rage I seized the cat, took a small knife out of my pocket and cut its throat
and took one of its eyes out ! Then I hanged the poor creature until it was dead

The next morning, I wake up and remembered what I had done and I felt sorry very much.
I buried my memory in the drink.

One night my house was burning. There was nothing left, but a strange thing happened. I
found out in my bedroom wall the shape of a huge cat with one eye and a rope around its neck. I
was terrified and could not forget such a horrible sight.

I regretted and felt sorry for Pluto so I bought another cat to take Pluto’s place. This cat
had a white patch on its chest.

I soon began to dislike the cat because it often stared at me with a strange and hatred
look. It terrified me very much.

One day my wife and I went to the cellar. I was getting drunk at that time. The cat
followed us. It got between my feet and nearly made me trip down the stairs. I was carrying an
axe in my hand. I was so angry that I raised my axe wanting to kill the poor animal when my
wife prevented me from doing so. My rage soon directed the axe at her. She fell dead at my feet.

Then I dug a grave to hide her body inside the cellar wall. I looked for the cat because I
decided to kill it too, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

The fourth day after the death of my wife, the police came to my house because of my
neighbours’ suspicion. The police searched the house and found nothing. I was so glad that I
said, “ Gentlemen, this is a well-built house. Look at this wall.” I lifted a stick and beat the wall
in which I had buried my wife.

The Legend of Kesodo Feast

Hundreds years ago, the last king of Majapahit had a young princess from one of his wives.

The princess was named Roro Anteng. Later, Roro Anteng married Joko Seger, who came from

Brahman caste.

Because of unfortunate situation the couple was forced to leave the kingdom. They settled

in the mountain area. They ruled the area and named it Tengger, which was derived from their

After several years of reign, the region flourished in prosperity, but Roro Anteng and Joko

Seger were sad because they did not have a child. They climbed the top of mountain and prayed

the crater. There was silence before they heard a voice. “I have to be sacrificed so that you will
all stay alive. From now on, you should arrange an annual offering ceremony on the 14th of
Kesodo (the twelfth month of Tengerese calendar)”. It was Kusuma’s voice. Kusuma’s brothers
