A. Asking for and giving suggestion

A suggestion is an idea or plan, so giving a suggestion means giving an idea or plan.
When we give a suggestion, it means we give an idea for what about what to do (plan),
advice, or what they might do in certain situations for someone’s consideration. It can
be accepted or refused.

a. The social function of asking and giving suggestions

The social function of asking and giving suggestions is to facilitate interpersonal
communication between different people.

b. Generic structure

1. Using modal verb

1. You + should (infinitive/ base verb)

2. You + ought to (infinitive/ base verb)

2. Using a question.

1. Why don’t you + (base verb)?

2. How about + (noun/ gerund)

3. Putting yourself in the person’s position.

If I were you, I would infinitive/ base verb)

4. Using ‘suggest’ or ‘recommend’. It isn’t too direct.

B. Asking for and Giving an Offer

An offer is an act of asking if someone would like to have something or if they would
like you to do something. We usually say yes, please, or no, thanks when we reply to
offers.

The social function of asking and giving an offer is to facilitate interpersonal
communication between different people.

C. The use of modal ‘should’ and ‘can’

Should and can belong to modal verbs. We can use them to express suggestions and
offer.
1) Should ( should + base verb)

Should usually use to express suggestion, recommendation, or advice.
For example:
A: What should I do to get a good score?
B: You should study harder.

2) Can ( can + base verb)
We usually use can show ability and permission. It also is used to give suggestions
and offers.
For example:
A: What can I do to be slim?
B: You can exercise regularly at the gym.

NOTES:
 You should . . . can be strong. People sometimes soften it by saying I think you should .
...
 Shall and should are both auxiliary verbs, but they have different usages and
meanings.
 Should, in general, is used as a past tense of shall, but the usage is occasional.
Independently, should is not be used in the past tense. Shall means something that is
intended to take place in the future.
 Could is more formal than can. Could is also less strong than should.

Activity: Reading Comprehension

Read the following dialogue! Then answer the questions!

Rani : I am bored. What should I do?
Nina : Why don’t we go shopping?
Rani : That’s a good idea. But, what are you going to buy?
Nina : I’m not going to buy anything. I just want to spend this day.
Rani : Oh, I see. Well, I want to buy a skirt. But, I don’t know where I should buy.
Nina : You should go to Varia Boutique. It has many kinds of clothes. The prices

are cheaper than others.
Rani : Where is it?
Nina : I can accompany you.
Rani : That’s very kind of you. Well, then where should we go?
Nina : How about having lunch at Tary’s Resto? There is a delicious dessert. You

should try it.
Rani : Sounds interesting. Well, I’ll change my clothes first.
Nina : Okay, I’ll wait for you.
