what are the fiveSince2012
food groups

the 5
food groups on a plate, in the proportion that you should be
eating them
throughout your day. If you eat a variety of foods from each
of these groups,
your body will receive all the nutrients and vitamins it needs
to function.

PROTEIN

Protein
is found throughout the body—in muscle, bone, skin, hair, and virtually every
other body part or tissue. It makes up the enzymes that power many
chemical
reactions and the hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your blood. At least
10,000
different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way.

CARBOHY
DRATE

Carbohydrates
are the sugars, starches and fibers
found in fruits, grains, vegetables and
milk products. Though often maligned in
trendy diets, carbohydrates — one of
the basic food groups — are important
to a healthy diet.

FIBER

Dietary
fiber is a plant-based nutrient that is
sometimes called roughage or bulk. It
is a type of carbohydrate but, unlike
other carbs, it cannot be broken down
into digestible sugar molecules.

VITAMIN &
MINERAL

Vitamins and minerals are
essential substances that our bodies need to develop and
function normally. The
known vitamins include A, C, D, E, and K, and
the
B vitamins. A number of minerals are essential for
healththat
people should aim to meet their nutrient requirements through a
healthy eating
pattern that includes nutrient-dense forms of foods.

FATS

Fats
are substances that help the body use some vitamins and keep
the skin healthy;
they are also the main way the body stores energy. In food,
there are many
types of fats - saturated, unsaturated, polyunsaturated,
monounsaturated, and
trans fats.
