Can Tho Kitchen Bar
is cooking traditional Vietnamese cuisine
by heart.
“Hidden gem” is hardly accurate to describe Can Tho (pronounced ‘Gung Turh’). Its location is
Oxley Drive, Runaway Bay’s main thoroughfare, a strip mall with convenient parking right out
front, but its appearance from the street is deceiving. Only the full tables in the restaurant’s
streetside alcove hint at the warm welcome and cosy environs of Can Tho.
Can Tho Kitchen Bar is owned and run by husband and wife team, Vien and Thao. Second
generation restaurateurs, they are passionate about sharing the communal dining and culture of
their homeland. Both came to Australia with their families in the 1980s as refugees and grew up in
the kitchens and dining rooms of their parents’ restaurants. Can Tho is a city in Vietnam’s south,
prosperous due to the fertile soil along the Mekong Delta.
Vien is the maestro in the kitchen, and attributes everything he knows to Thao’s mother, from her
work ethic and order in the kitchen to the time-honoured recipes that combine the kaleidoscope
flavours and influences.
And while Can Tho has been in operation for 13 years in the same spot, it was a trip to Melbourne
where they experience for themselves the vibrant and eclectic restaurant scene that convinced
Vien and Thao that a revamp was in order.
Today it entices with its ultra-contemporary, subdued, yet fascinating décor that fuses family
memories and cultural ties with modern motifs, bright lanterns and a bar that is the pulsing hub.
The night we visited, Thao recommended we sit back and enjoy a parade of selected house
specialties to savour the full Can Tho repertoire, washed down with the cocktails they are famous
for!
To start the experience, a tasting platter from the Entrees, or Small dishes, with Chilli Steamed Dim
Sim, Rice Paper Rolls and Fried Quail got the tastebuds well and truly in gear.
Then the classic Pho Beef Noodle Soup followed, complemented by Garlic Rice and Viet Taco, a
crispy battered pancake with pork belly and prawn, beansprouts and Vien’s exceptional concoction
of herbs and spices.
For main course, Sizzling Yummy Chicken was a delectable dish of caramelised chicken and
cashews, while the Steamed Barramundi was delicately bathed in ginger, shallots and chilli.
Dessert too was expertly prepared and served: Mung Bean Cake, though not as delectably named,
was a melt-in-the-mouth divine confection of coconut cream, ice cream, coconut shavings and
crushed peanuts.
During the feast, the vibe of the restaurant slowly swelled with chatter, clatter and subtle music.
It was easy to forget we were in suburbia. We were transported, not to the streets of Vietnam,
but most certainly the convivial warmth of a family home, on a larger scale perhaps, but just as
enveloping and heart-felt.
Can Tho Kitchen Bar is open Tuesday through to Sunday from 5 to 10pm, with two sessions
