Learning About Time

Watch the “Commonly Asked Questions about Dates” video on
Schoology to learn about the abbreviations/key words listed
below. As you watch, pause the video and write in your own

Multiple-tier Timelines

Multiple-tier timelines use two or more rows of events.
While each row represents a different subject, the time
period is the same.

Multiple-tier timelines can be used to help us look at
cause and effect relationships or patterns and themes
among events in a specific period of time.

We will be using a multi-tier timeline to show the rise
and fall of four early civilizations in the Americas: The
Mississippian, Inca, Maya, and Aztec and look for
RELATIONSHIPS between the dates.

The
Mississippians

Your first paragraph should explain who the
Mississippian people were and details about their
civilization (fact based EXPLICIT information). Your
second paragraph should be your interpretation of
the information (INFERENTIAL) and answer one of
these three questions: The Mississippians people
were people who believed that
● How did the relationships the Mississippians

had with each other and their environment
affect their civilization
● How did the Mississippians’ beliefs influence
their actions?
● How did where the Mississippian people live

Priests: The Social Classes

Ancient Maya Empire was not
ruling the the families. The most
powerful were the Mayans. They
brought the priests tributes or
gifts and provided manual labor.

Nobles: The Nobles were one of the
only people in the Ancient Maya tribe in
the world that could read and write.

Merchants and Craftsmen: The Maya didn’t have

middle class Mayans, so merchants and craftsmen were either
nobles or pesents creating art or running a business.

Peasants:Peasants made up the bulk of Mayan society. Craftsmen lived in

the cities. Farmers lived outside the cities, in their fields where they grow crops.
Peasants worked very hard. They did not live a life of luxury but quite opposite.
Peasants were used as human sacrifice if no other people, like captured warriors,
were available.

Slaves: Slaves were considered the lowest class. Slaves were
not treated poorly. Most of the victims of human sacrifice were
chosen from the slaves.

Art and Religion
of the Maya

The lives of the ancient Maya centered near their religion and gods of
nature. Religion touched many aspects of their lives. Some examples
are their calendars, human sacrifice, and gods.

This poem is made by Nezahualcoyotl. The poem is about an hungry
(or fasting) coyote. “I Erect our drum” I erect our drum, I gather my
friends. Aya! Here they find recreation, I make them sing. Thus we
must go over there, to the other world. Remember this. Be Happy.
Aya! Oh, my friends. Ohuaya ohuaya. In my opinion I think this poem
is about remembering good times with your friends.
