In the region between South Africa and Namibia, preparations are being made to protect these penguins’ new travel corridor—from icebergs to sunny shores. They’ll get safe places to rest, new signs that say “Penguin Crossing!”, and friendly watchers to make sure they stay happy and waddling. Penguins don’t ask for passports, but they do need safe paths. Thinking about animals’ “journeys” is like thinking of our own adventures!A KID WHO BUILT A FREE LIBRARYIn the country of Canada, a 10-year-old named Maya decided that her neighbourhood needed more books. So she built a “little free library” box in her front garden—anyone can pick up a book or leave one behind. The library is colourful, weather-proof, and has a “Take a book, leave a book” sign. Why it’s cool for kids: You don’t need to wait for a grown-up organisation to create something good in your world—you can make it yourself! Want to build your own free library or a community garden? Go for it.Scientists say there are thousands more African forest elephants than previously thought - all thanks to the animals’ poo!African forest elephants are critically endangered and it’s difficult for researchers to count how many there are in the wild as they live in remote, dense jungles across 22 African countries. But now they have been able to count the elephants by taking DNA from the dung left behind, according to the study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). One of the scientists from the study, Dr. Benson Okita-Ouma, said it’s “good news” because “there’s more of them than we thought,” but “there’s still a lot of work to be done.” This article was taken from NewsroundCOUNTING ON POO!

14 | DECEMBER ISSUE 25 | WWW.KIDAROUND.BIZ TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL [email protected]’s often a good idea to have a de-cluttering day sometime just after Christmas. The kids have got new toys etc, and as a result they are often more ready to give away old toys that have been around for some time. Also, if they’ve been given duplicate presents or things that they genuinely don’t want to play with then why not put them aside to donate to a charity. It’s also good to get your children thinking about other children who are not so lucky to receive lots of presents every Christmas. The British Heart Foundation is always happy to receive unwanted Christmas presents. Items they will accept are toys, clothes, shoes and handbags, jewellery and accessories, DVDs and CDs, books. You can drop donations off at your local BHF shop, or they will come and collect from your home for free. Find out more hereAlternatively donate to a women’s refuge centre. For example the Colchester and Tendring Women’s Refuge will gladly accept new or nearly new toys and books in excellent condition. Find out more hereSometimes hospices will hold ‘Unwanted Gifts’ appeal days in January to help raise funds to provide essential care and support to local people affected by life limiting illnesses. Contact your local hospice to find out more. There are charity shops on every high street in Britain – call your local one in advance to check as some will have restrictions on certain items – for example some will accept plastic toys but not soft toys.Time for Christmas DeclutteringTips and ideas on how to make room for the new explotion of toys
