4 Easter Issue 2023 • www.kidaround.biz TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL [email protected] Brentwood School’s Winning Moves in Chess World Chess is one of the oldest and most popular board games in the world and it is certainly enjoying a renaissance at Brentwood School with hundreds of students, including UK chess title holders, regularly competing at the highest level. rom across the board tournaments to national interschool competitions, House events, lunchtime and after-school chess clubs and team challenges, there is something for everyone from the beginner to the worldclass aficionado. Head of Chess, Robin Slade, aims to make Brentwood School one of the UK’s strongest chess schools offering top level coaching and 11+ chess scholarships. But his ambition doesn’t end there…. as well as raising the profile of chess within the school, making it fun and accessible to everyone, he also promotes chess across Essex. As the sun set on an exciting 2022 season, Brentwood School chess emerged from the shadow of Covid stronger and wiser. Chess slowly surfaced from an online-only world back into a physical one, with across the board and online chess seamlessly running in parallel. Mr Slade said: “In our last House competition, 120 students played over 500 games for their Houses. Anyone who sees chess as a quiet, scholarly activity would have been surprised to see, and hear, all the players and non-playing supporters cheering for their Houses in the Memorial Hall during the competition.” But as Mr Slade points out, these competitions are only the tip of the iceberg: “Students of any age and any level get a huge amount from the game. Without realising it, they are learning problem solving and risk management. They are also learning to deal in the right way with all the emotions of leading and trailing, winning and losing. Just as importantly, it is simply a fun way to spend time with and make friends.” Brentwood School also continues to support junior chess locally and across Essex. “We run a number of tournaments in partnership with the Essex Junior Chess Association open to all juniors from Essex and further afield. Online, we run monthly individual blitz events open to all juniors with live TwitchTV commentary by our Director of Chess, IM Richard Pert. “Hopefully, 2023 will see Brentwood and Essex junior chess continue to expand online and across the board. Chess fits in with so many aspects of Brentwood School’s learner profile: creativity, problem-solving, reflection, resilience and much more. The future of chess at Brentwood is looking very bright indeed!” The School’s Head of Chess also organises fortnightly national inter-school competitions for any primary or preparatory school who wishes to take part. Any schools looking for some advice on different ways to expand the chess they offer in their own school should contact Mr Slade: [email protected] Women’s Candidate Master and Brentwood School Chess Captain, Nina Pert, is the 7th highest rated female player in the world for her age. Here's some tips on how to lower costs and hopefully turn it into a possiblilty.

As well as joining them to clubs, it is also important to make the most of the outdoors. Playing outdoors allows your child to be more adventurous and lets them test their physical limits, this will help them grow self-confidence and independence as there is more space for freedom. Being outdoors has many health benefits including natural vitamin D from exposure to exposure to the sun for a short period (always remember to keep sun safe) and the physical activities will help with a healthy heart, It can also give yourself and your child an opportunity to meet new people and gain new friendships. Newborn: will love the fresh air and exploring the different sights, smells and noises whilst out and about – you can either put them in the pushchair or for extra comfort and closeness have them in a sling/carrier. The benefits are that your little bundle of joy will be more likely to sleep better giving you some nice ‘me time’. Toddlers: At this age thy love exploring everything and are usually quite easy to please with simple activities: Play chase or let them run freely on an open field or in the garden A day at a forest is a great adventure with collecting twigs/leaves and nature spotting, Active Kids Look at our Active Kids section for ideas on how to keep the kids, happy, entertained and active. It's very important for kids to get a healthy amount of exercise and joining them to an activity camp, performing arts school and other fun extra curricular activities is a great way of achieving this. Plus, they will get to make new friends.

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING www.kidaround.biz • Easter Issue 2023• 11 ACTIVE KIDS Go to the park where they enjoy being pushed on a swing Jumping in muddy puddles on a rainy day. Digging in the garden or playing with animals, tractors, dinosaurs (anything you don’t mind getting dirty) in the mud Bubbles – always a winner, you can buy kits cheap that do all different size bubbles. Watch the joy on their face when they try and pop them all. Preschoolers: At this age they are craving for a little more independence and are learning to play with other children and letting their imagine take over with make believe play so here’s some ideas to let them achieve this. Getting dirty, invest in a second-hand kitchen or get a washing up bowl and old cooking utensils and let them create all kinds of muddy delights. Take a ball for catch or football or just play chasing one another over a playing field Do some gardening, make a small section in your garden just for them and let them choose what they want to grow. You can cheat and get ready grown or start from seeds. Take them to a forest and let them find tunnels to crawl through and climb fallen trees. Take a finders list (spot a squirrel, a big leaf etc) and see how many items you can tick off Invite a friend and ask them to bring a soft toy and let them do their own teddy bear picnic A day at the Seaside: set tasks like collecting shells/pebbles and building sandcastles. School-age: As your older child develops the need for more independent and structured play, don’t think that they won’t enjoy getting back to nature. Try these ideas and you’ll see how much they enjoy it: A day at the seaside, hunt for shark teeth or fossils, these are harder to find and very interesting for them to show their friends at school. Take them crabbing, all you need is some bacon, net and bucket. Forest fun: help them build a den and climb the taller trees (I know it sounds scary but tree climbing is great fun) Get family and friends together for a big game of rounders or cricket. Play tag or off ground touch (can’t be tagged if you are off the ground i.e. standing on a wall or step) Playing outside is fun, exciting and important for children’s learning and development. Plus, you’ll be surprised how much fun you will have and will feel like a kid again t oo which is great for your own well-being. Share your family outings with us on facebook

36 Easter Issue 2023 • www.kidaround.biz TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL [email protected] ARTICLE You Grow, Kid! Parenting Advice to Help Your Four to Six-YearOld Become More Independent Raising a little human is one of life’s greatest honours, but that doesn’t mean there’s no stress involved. In fact, during certain times, you’ll likely find that it’s one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do! This becomes especially apparent when they begin to phase out of their terrible twos and into a territory where they should be able to start ticking off certain tasks without parental supervision. It’s an overwhelming stage that can fill you with both pride and anxiety...but take a deep breath! Experts at Oceans have put together some parenting advice to help you assist your four to sixyear-old in becoming a brighter, more independent spark. How do you know when your child is ready? Every child is different, and often a “one size fits all” mentality doesn’t work here. That being said, you can look towards expert guidance to determine what’s usually expected during each stage of your child’s development. For instance, it’s believed that children from four to six years old first begin to develop their independence, as well as form real friendships and grow important life skills. This could be a good indicator of when you should at least test the waters to see if your child can carry out basic duties independently. Some tasks they should begin to try alone Feeding themselves It’s crucial you understand how valuable this step is in their evolution, as it’s thought that growing and encouraging self-feeding skills is just as important as the nutrition they’re consuming. At the four-year mark, your little one should begin developing self-feeding skills that include eating with a fork and using it to prick items. Between the ages of five and six, your child should have the ability to butter their own bread as well as use a knife (that isn’t super sharp!) to cut food items such as vegetables and meat. It’s important to be patient during this period and accept the fact that mess is almost guaranteed. Let them explore their potential and get an understanding of how things work...practice makes perfect! Going to the toilet alone Potty training is an adventure, to say the least. As a parent, putting the nappies to one side – especially when it’s for the final time – is a huge milestone, and one that really signifies the independence of your child. Knowing how to wipe their own bottom with little to no help from an adult should take place between the ages of three and five, and there are steps you can take to ensure that they reach this breakthrough accurately and effectively. Help them to understand good sitting balance, how to fold the toilet roll, and the correct wiping motion. The most significant step in this toilet training adventure is to teach them how to know when they’re completely clean. This should mark the end of the potty-training process!

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING www.kidaround.biz • Easter Issue 2023• 37 ARTICLE Jordan Kelly, brand marketing manager at Oceans, said: “This could also be a fantastic opportunity to teach your little one about the importance of looking after the environment. Choose responsibly sourced toilet paper and educate them on what makes it so special and how it contributes to a happier, healthier planet.” Chores It may seem like a child of four, five, or six is too young to start doing tasks around the house, but it’ll benefit them in the long run. Teaching your child about the importance of carrying out various chores is a powerful way to demonstrate responsibility and self-reliance. There are various age-appropriate duties your little one can begin getting to grips with, and as a result, their independence will soar! Making their bed, emptying paper bins, and pulling weeds are all suitable chores for a child aged four to six. At first, you can have them shadow you to see how it’s done properly, and then encourage them to do the same actions without supervision. Brushing teeth By four years old, your infant should be brushing their teeth both morning and night – but be present while they do so. To help them succeed, brush your teeth alongside them so they can see the correct process. If you’re struggling to keep them engaged with the activity, let them pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste so that they feel more in control, and consider giving out a reward each time they do the job well and with little to no fuss. Brushing should still be supervised during ages five and six to ensure the teeth have been properly and accurately cleaned. Top tips to encourage independence during these tasks Support without handholding During these crucial stages, you might find it a little hard to let go – and that’s completely understandable! It is fundamental, however, that you try your best to resist the urge to ‘hold their hand’ throughout each process, even if you think they need it. You can support them in other ways, including giving praise and rewards, and setting a good example. Let them fail Hey, mistakes are going to happen one way or another, so you might as well just let them. It’s impossible to protect them from failure, and it isn’t a good idea to try, either. Making mistakes gives them a key opportunity to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and they’ll naturally get better at each task the more that they do it. Praise their efforts This journey is as much overwhelming for them as it is for you, so be generous with your praise and make sure it’s given when it’s due. Verbal praise is powerful, letting them know that you’re proud of their efforts and delighted with the outcome, but it could also be a good idea to give rewards in the shape of trips to their favourite restaurants, a new toy, or even just a sticker. You’ve got this! They really, really do grow up so fast, don’t they? One minute they’re in nappies with gummy smiles and completely dependent on you, and the next, they’re marching around the house doing things for themselves. It can be scary, we know, but it’s an unavoidable step that will help them become better, stronger people in the future. Follow the above advice to help your mini-me become a successful bigger-me. You’ve got this!
