Why sensory play is important?

From birth through to early childhood, children use their senses to explore and try to make sense of the
world and process all of this new information. They do this by touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, moving
and hearing.

Providing opportunities for children to actively use
their senses as they explore the world through sensory
play is crucial to brain development; helping to build
nerve connections in the brains pathways. This leads
to a child's ability to complete more complex learning
tasks and supports cognitive growth, language and
speech development, fine and gross motor skills, social
interaction and problem solving skills. It can also aid
develop and enhancing memory. Known for its often
calming effects, sensory play can be often beneficial for
children that may feel anxious, frustrated and restless.

So, what is sensory play? Sensory play can be any activity
that stimulates the child's senses. Activities that facilitate
exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate
and explore. Its easy to get caught up in making it look perfect and ‘insta’ worthy or spending lots of
money, but the key is to keep it simple, often the simplest keep their attention for the longest such as a
container of water and a few cups for tipping and pouring, or coloured rice for scooping, sensory tubes are
another simple yet effective toy. The most important rule is to have fun together.

If I could have one thing in my sensory kit it would
be a foil blanket, it really is the unsung hero of the
sensory world! Fun and Noisy. For younger babies
simply lay them on top and let them kick and move
around. As they get older, team the blanket with shiny
objects or toys with lights to create a mini light show.
As they get even older drape over a chair for a mini
den!

Festive Entertainment

Christmas is here!

There’s no better way to celebrate with your family this year than with a trip to the Mercury Theatre,
Colchester.
Following the completion of our £11million transformation in 2021, Mercury is pleased to be back hosting
Essex’s biggest pantomime, Beauty and the Beast.
Antony Stuart-Hicks and Dale Superville team up again this year and lead the cast of professionals as Dame
Betty Bon Bon and Belle’s little brother Almondé. We can’t wait for the naughty jokes and the singing and
laughing to begin (though our adult only shows are now sold out! Sorry!).
Will Belle be able to escape the Beast’s enchanted castle with the help of her family and melt the Beast’s
icy heart before it’s too late? Or will Cupid’s plan work before the last rose petal falls?
It’s a tale as old as time that you’ve never seen before! Discover what it takes for true love to conquer all
and whether love is all you really need?
Tickets are selling faster than ever this year, so don’t miss our on your favourite seats! Some shows are
already sold out!
Beauty and the Beast runs from Sat 25 Nov – Sun 15 Jan and tickets start from just £15. Suitable for ages 5+
Don’t worry, we’ve not forgotten the little ones! Our fantastic family show in the Studio – Pinocchio! Great
for children aged 3+, the show brings to life the classic characters in a fun 50-minute show with a modern
twist!
Filled with music, dancing and plenty of chances to join in, this retelling of the classic tale is packed with
fun and surprises.
When Pinocchio discovers that he’s a puppet and not a human, he sets off on an exciting adventure with his
trusty sidekick cricket to find the magic potion that will transform him into a real boy. Will he become a real
boy? Or can Pinocchio – and the world around him – learn to accept this puppet boy for who he really is?
Pinocchio runs in our intimate 98 seat Studio theatre from Wed 7 Dec – Sat 31 Dec with tickets from £12.
Don’t forget you can join us before the show in our new Café Bar for snacks, hot drinks, or a meal from our
brand-new menu. Our big and bright Café Bar is a great place to meet friends or reunite with family over the
holidays, so pop in anytime from 10am ‘til late Tue-Sat.
So, no matter who you are, if you have children or not, there is something for you this Christmas at the
Mercury and we’d love to see you!
