How Much Sleep Should A Baby/Child Get?
Use the table below for a rough guide of how much sleep your child should be getting. There is no set rules on this, it is
purely guidance.
Newborn Age Range Recommended hours of sleep
Infant
Toddler 0-3 months 14-17 hours
Preschool 4-11 months 12-15 hours
School-age 1-2 years old 11-14 hours
3-5 years old 10-13 hours
6-13 years old 9-11 hours
If you are worried about how much sleep your child is getting, there are things you can do to help.
• Test the mattress, if it's uncomfortable to you, then it's probably the same for your child. If buying a new mattress isn't
within your budget, you can look at mattress toppers or a duvet on top for extra padding. You can also look for second
hand, some people have nearly new ones used in guest bedrooms that they sell, facebook market place is good for items
like this.
• Talk to your child to see why they struggle, they may be having difficulties at school or preschool. They may be scared to
sleep due to reoccurring night terrors
• Baths can be a great time for your child to relax and there are some lovely lavender bubble baths you can buy to help.
• Keep bedtime calm and stick to a routine, whether they lay in bed awake when this is first introduced, that's ok, just keep
to the same routine and they will soon start drifting off.
• Ensuring they are active during the day and get plenty of fresh air.
• All advise suggests to stop children on gadgets and TV 1-hour before bedtime, personally, this has not made any
difference to my own child and he sleeps well after being exposed. However, you may want to try it and see?
If you feel your child is suffering from insomnia, talk to your GP. Don't struggle alone. For more help and advice click here for
the Sleep Foundation.

With the rising costs
of energy, see these
tips on how you can
reduce the cost of
doing you washing.
How to cut the costs of laundry:
Make sure you’re washing full loads
If you can, try to hold off putting the washing machine on until you have enough laundry for a full load.
Your machine will use the same amount of energy no matter how many clothes are in there so you’re
better off waiting until the laundry builds up a bit.
However, newer washing machines do have half load settings. This tells the machine there are less
clothes and therefore less water is used.
But don’t over fill the dryer
Putting too many clothes in the dryer means that they will take more time to dry and you’ll need to
have it on for longer resulting in an increased use of energy so try not to fill the dryer up to the brim.
Line dry clothes
An obvious way to save money on laundry is to line dry clothes. If the weather forecast is rain then you
can always air dry your clothes inside on a drying rack. Just be sure to space out the clothes so they dry
properly.
Put your wash on at off-peak times
Try to put your laundry loads on at off-peak times which tend to be early in the mornings or late at
night. This tends to be when energy prices are lower as most people aren’t using energy at this time.
Clean the dryer filter
It’s easy to neglect the dryer filter, but a regular clean will help your dryer to work more efficiently and
safely.
Use dryer balls
It’s worth buying some dryer balls which help separate clothes in a drying cycle, allowing more air
flow between them. This means they’re able to be dried quicker using less energy
and costing you less money.
See if your machine has a quick wash option
A lot of machines have a quick wash
option, and unless all of your clothes
are stained, this should work perfectly
fine. It will wash your clothes in less
time and use less energy

As we grieve for the great Queen Elizabeth II, I
thought I would try and find some information
on what is expected during the mourning stages
of the Queen. A Queen that has felt like a family
member to many of us. A Queen with the most
warming smile and kind nature and a Queen we
have been so very proud of for 70 years.
The following guide has been taken by GOV.UK
to read the full details please click here.
The Demise of her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II: National Mourning
Guidance.
National Mourning is a period of time for reflection in response to
the demise of the Sovereign, or other member of the Royal Family or a very prominent person in national life.
This guide is intended to provide the public, businesses and institutions with an explanation of National Mourning, and
outline some practical advice on how you or your organisation may wish to observe public mourning during this period.
It covers, among other matters:
• Half-masting of flags;
• How observing mourning can affect the continuation of business, events and sporting fixtures; • Floral tributes; and
• Books of condolence.
Nevertheless, mourning is very personal and we anticipate individuals, families, communities and organisations may
want to mark Her Majesty’s demise in their own way. There is no expectation on the public or organisations to observe
specific behaviours during the mourning period.
Public services will continue as usual, although there may be some changes to service availability on the day of the State
Funeral.
As well as the UK government, the devolved administrations, Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories will be
observing National Mourning and will issue separate guidance.
National Mourning Guidance
FLAGS
Flags flying from Royal residences, government buildings and military establishments have been half- masted following
the demise of Her Majesty.
Businesses or other organisations wishing to pay their respects by half-masting flags or holding silences can follow the
guidance that has been issued on GOV.UK.
BUSINESS AND PUBLIC SERVICES
There is no obligation on organisations to suspend business during the National Mourning period. Depending on the
nature and location of their business and the tone of planned events, some businesses may wish to consider closing or
postponing events, especially on the day of the State Funeral, however this is at the discretion of individual businesses.
Public services will continue as usual, although there may be some changes to service availability. Further guidance on
any potential considerations relating to the day of the State Funeral will be issued if needed.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
Throughout the period of National Mourning, particularly on days with ceremonial events and in the build up to the State
Funeral, public transport in key locations will be very busy and journeys may take longer than usual. Further information
will be announced by network operators, and you should check your journey before you travel to ensure all services are
running as expected.
COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS
Many community organisations, including places of worship, Local Authorities and charities, will arrange events
commemorating the life and service of Her Majesty. This may include holding services of reflection (or similar), as well
as opportunities for those with no religious beliefs to pay their respects. Local Authorities will support the coordination
of local events so please check with them or your local place of worship for further details.
MAJOR EVENTS, ENTERTAINMENT & SPORTS
There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting
fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National
Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual
organisations.
As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider
cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of
the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is
entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.
If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State
Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they
do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated
processions. As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of
National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence
and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting
fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.
NATIONAL MOURNING GUIDANCE
FLORAL TRIBUTES
It is customary for mourners to leave flfloral tributes. This section outlines the details of key locations where
you can lay flowers and other tributes.
During this time of National Mourning, the government and the Royal Household respectfully request that no official
flowers, wreaths, or tributes be sent from organisations to the location of the State Funeral, Royal Residences or
government offices.
Within your local community there may be a place, such as a town hall or place of worship, where members of the
public can lay flowers or tributes in memory of Her Majesty. Please check the website of your local authority, or local
media for further information.
In all locations you should follow the advice and direction of stewards.
London
A memorial flower garden will be created in Green Park tomorrow and will be the main place for laying flowers near
Buckingham Palace.
Windsor
Flowers can be laid on the Long Walk at Cambridge Gate close to the town centre. Read further information on the
Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead website.
Sandringham
Flowers can be laid on the estate and visitors will be directed to the correct location on arrival.
Belfast
Flowers can be laid at Hillsborough Castle. Read further information on the Northern Ireland Office website.
Edinburgh
Flowers can be laid at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Read further information on the Scottish Government website.
Balmoral
Flowers can be laid at the Main Gate to the Castle. Read further information on the Balmoral Castle website.
Cardiff
Flowers can be laid at the areas either side of the City Hall entrance. Read further information on the Welsh Government
website.
TRIBUTES
Making a donation to one of Her Majesty’s many charities and patronages may be considered a fitting way of paying
tribute to Her extraordinary legacy. Read further information on how you can donate and a list of Her Majesty’s charities
and patronages.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II being a dominate subject on the TV, at schools and within
homes, it may raise concern and questions by young children. May be you've had a bereavement
of a loved-one recently and just don't know how to deal with the situation or know how to talk
to your child/children about it. With this in mind, we have turned to some experts for advice.
What is the best way to tell a child about death?
Children need simple and logical information when someone has died to help them better understand
what has happened. You don’t have to over-explain the details, but remember to be clear, as children
will fill in the blanks with their imagination, which is often far from the reality of the situation.
Encourage them to share their thoughts; this may be a completely new topic for them, so check what
they understand it to mean first. You don’t have to wait until someone in the child’s life has passed
away to bring up death.
Dr Marianne Trent, Clinical Psychologist and author at Good Thinking Psychology, says:
“Death needn’t be scary. I’d just stick to facts that can be built on logically as the child grows up. Death is an
unavoidable consequence of life and I try to include aspects of it in day-to-day life. If you’re out and about
and you see a dead bird or animal, I would talk about it in simple terms. This can be helpful if a sudden
death occurs because the child then already has a reference point for death existing. Give the child lots of
opportunities to ask questions because I’m confident that they will have many!”
Choosing the right words to describe death to a child.
‘Death’ and ‘dead’ are not new words for children—they may see dead creatures in the garden or dead
flowers—what’s important is to help them make the association that these words can refer to people
too. Avoid euphemisms such as ‘a better place’, or saying that the person is ‘sleeping’ or ‘lost’ as this
can be confusing or even frightening to children. Although it can be tempting to use these softer
descriptions of death, it’s important to use simple and direct language that is appropriate to their age
and level of understanding.
Dr Marianne Trent suggests:
“Simple facts and exact phrasing are best. If someone has died of cancer or a heart attack then I would use
those terms and then break them down into concepts that the child understands. All of us die eventually
because our hearts stop pumping and then our brain doesn’t get enough oxygen, so I think if you’re lost for
words you can just stick to those very basic facts.”

How do children react when you tell them about death?
The way children understand and react to death will vary with age. Younger children may revert
to immature behaviours or have outbursts, whereas school-age children may have difficulty
concentrating or experience feelings of sadness, anger or guilt. Children don’t always vocalise their
feelings, so watch how they act and make sure to check in with them. The most likely response for all
children, however, is to have lots of questions.
Dr Marianne Trent says, “Do be prepared for the questions and for the fact that they might catch you off
guard.” She also adds, “Please don’t be afraid of showing your emotions in front of your children. Children
will also make sense of death and dying by looking at their own most important people, this might include
asking questions about whether you or they or someone else will die.”
It’s normal for children to experience a wide range of emotions in response to death, but it’s
important that parents recognise when a child is responding normally or when they may need
professional help.
Carole Henderson, Managing Director at Grief UK said: “Children may allow themselves to be distracted
for a time, but the grief does not go away. It often manifests in other areas, causing serious problems in
school and at home.'
A few of the behaviours that can be the result of unresolved or unacknowledged grief are:
• Difficulty concentrating
• Reduced participation or interest in class
• Angry outbursts, violence
• Trouble sleeping, nightmares
• Frequent absence from school
Perhaps you are worried about telling a child a loved one has passed away. Or you may be concerned
that you will terrify them or say something inappropriate.
You might be having trouble dealing with your own emotions, so finding it difficult to help the child.
Alternatively, you may feel compelled to keep quiet in order to protect them.
If you're feeling this way, remember that it's common to find conversations like these challenging.

Small School Feel, Big School Opportunities
27th July 2022: Brentwood Preparatory School’s award-winning, multi-
million pound development not only provides the Prep with the kind of
learning spaces that most schools can only dream of, it also opens up a
world of opportunities for its young pupils.
The planned growth of the Middleton Hall Lane Prep School enables
Brentwood to offer a breadth and depth of academic courses and co-
curricular programmes that few schools in the country can match while
maintaining that small school feel.
Headmaster Jason Whiskerd explains: “However large or small a school is, it is really important that every child feels
that they are known and that they are valued. Although the Form Teachers play a significant role in caring for their class,
it is the small, regular interactions between all staff and pupils that make Brentwood such a welcoming and friendly
school.
“We make a point of greeting the children at the gate each morning, chatting to them in the playground at break times.
We listen to what the children tell us about their experiences at school and respond accordingly. We have expanded
our Pastoral team, with an additional Pastoral Mentor; we’ve also introduced Heads of Year which allows more scope
for year teams to get to know their pupils”
Following three years of growth, Brentwood Preparatory School has reached its sweet spot achieving the optimum
balance between pupil numbers and outstanding facilities. The new development also won a coveted 2022 RIBA East
Award which celebrates great architecture across the UK.
The impressive Prep development includes a brand new assembly and dining hall, a three storey classroom block and
reception area, and three interconnecting Foundation (Nursery) rooms, which overlook a bespoke and innovative play
space. The project cements a 15-year relationship between Brentwood School and award-winning architects, Cottrell
and Vermeulen Architecture.
Mr Whiskerd continued: “The growth of the Prep School was well planned and enables Brentwood to offer a breadth
and depth of academic courses and co-curricular programmes that few schools in the country can match. This
growth has been supported by an expansion of our facilities (most obviously the new Prep buildings but also in our
future plans for the site, which will form part of our vision and strategy communications, next year) and staffing, to
ensure that class sizes remain small and that we continue to offer individual and personalised care and provision.
“Over the past three years we have restructured our Senior Leadership Team to ensure a more effective line-
management structure; introduced a Middle Leadership development scheme to support the ‘engine room’ of the
school; and expanded our research and development programme, with every teacher undertaking an individualised
project to help develop their practice.
“We’ve also added two new Houses so that more pupils than ever before have opportunities to represent their House
in our vibrant House programme. Our co-curricular programme now offers even more opportunities to the children
and we are extremely proud that every child has had the opportunity to represent the school in the major sports.
Our academic enrichment programme now takes place within the timetable so that every child has access to a rich
and varied programme. This was not the case before we expanded the roll and I know that the children are the main
beneficiaries of this approach.
“And finally, whilst we have grown as a school, we have also reduced the pupil to staff ratio quite significantly over time.
This really has helped in terms of us knowing all of the children and in maintaining that personal and individualised
experience that is so important.”

30 hours childcare for eligible three- and four-year-olds
Some working parents can get the extended funded entitlement (EFE) which is up to an extra 15 hours
funding per week on top of the universal 15 hours funding, this is often called the “30 hour offer”. This is
because children can have up to 30 hours a week for 38 weeks which is a total of 1140 hours of funded
entitlement a year. You should check how your preferred childcare provider/childminder offers the
funding to check it meets your needs.
You will be able to check your eligibility using the online Childcare calculator - GOV.UK and complete an
online application. Before you sign up for the extended entitlement, you need to look at all the options
to make sure you choose the best package for you. It is possible that the childcare element of Working
Tax Credit could be affected as you would likely be paying for less childcare.
If eligible you need to make sure you apply for EFE before the beginning of the term that you
want the funding to start. Please note: If you apply for your code after the beginning of the
term that you want funding to start, your provider will not be able to claim the extended funded
entitlement. You will only be able to get the universal 15 hours entitlement that term.
