4 February Issue 2023 • www.kidaround.biz TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL [email protected] Building Futures for the Next Generation Jesters Montessori Inspired Nursery School Danbury has pledged support to the #WeAreEducators campaign, led by leading early years membership organisation the Early Years Alliance. Despite research showing how critical the early years are to children’s long-term development, too often the sector is seen as people who ‘look after’ young children while their parents work. Recent research by the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, found only 17% of the public recognise the unique importance of the 0-5 period of a child’s life relative to other age brackets. In reality, those working in early years are educators, playing a pivotal, irreplaceable role, in laying educational foundations for years to come. Jesters is dedicated to providing all children attending their settings with high-quality education that will lay this foundation. A key focus for Jesters Danbury is providing child centred Montessori inspired education designed to support each child to fulfill their potential. Alison Doherty Jesters’ MD said: “As an early years educator, the importance placed on education in our sector is all too often ignored. At Danbury Montessori Inspired Nursery School, education in its widest sense is a primary focus. We pride ourselves on equipping children with key skills, learning and experiences that will set them up for their future”. ONE TO WATCH THIS HALF TERM KidAround were lucky enough to be invited to the preview screening of the new film Epic Tails at the Vue Cinema, Leicester Square. Epic Tails is a story about the smallest mouse wanting the biggest adventures. However, without the belief of friends, she nearly gets stuck in the boring life of living in an attic. When all of a sudden something happens and she is chosen to save their Greek village and sets off on an epic adventure. This film made us laugh from the offset and even Louis, who can't sit still for more than 5 minutes, sat watching it with a smile. They made the mean characters soft enough that it wouldn't scare children and kept us all gripped throughout. "That film was awesome and so funny, we really liked the part with the octopus snot" from Amelie & Louis aged 5. Overall, we highly recommend having a family day out to the cinema this half term and watch this fun, family-friendly, animated film where the smallest heros have the biggest adventure. Warning: children may recreate the adventures when home so be prepared for some noise and role play action. Epic Tails will be released in cinemas on Friday 10th February and features the voices of Rob Beckett, Giovanna Fletcher & Josh Widdicombe. Louis and Amelie joining in on the adventure with Pattie & crew

People thrive in communities, and this connection is vital for our wellbeing. When we have healthy connections – to family, friends and others – this can support our mental health and our sense of wellbeing. And when our need for rewarding social connections is not met, we can sometimes feel isolated and lonely – which can have a negative impact on our mental health. For Children’s Mental Health Week 2023, we’re encouraging people to connect with others in healthy, rewarding and meaningful ways. We will next be celebrating World Book Day on 2 March 2023. Our mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them. Section Title 8 February Issue 2023 • www.kidaround.biz TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL [email protected] There seems to be a lot of advice available for how to cope with the challenges of babies, toddlers and teenagers but not so much for that in between age, 8-12 years; the ‘tweenies’. This age group face a lot of change with the progression to secondary school being a huge milestone. Add hormones, social media and new friendship groups - it can be one hell of a ride. We have therefore spent some time looking into the changes that tweenies often face and looked for reasons and tips to help you and them throguh it. Emotional Development and Social Behaviour • Friendships – children’s friendships can become more complex. Children become more emotionally dependant on friendships. • Peer pressure -can become much stronger. Children may feel pressured to impress friends to fit in better. Educationally, they will be pushed more with more tests and homework . • Self Awareness – Children (more so in girls) can start to become more aware of their bodies as puberty approaches. Sadly, eating problems can start from as young as 9. Learning and Empathy • Children will start to grow more independent from the family - yes, closing themselves in their room for hours can start quite young! • They want to be more independent and play out with friends without adults supervising. • Children will start to gain the ability to see the point of view of others more clearly and empathise with friends and family. • Their attention span will also increase - meaning us parents will hopefully not have to repeat ourselves quite so often! Tips to help them (and you) through it all • Take time out to spend solely with your child. If you are busy with cleaning or cooking let them help, it may take a little longer but it will also be a lot more fun. • Try to give your child a good balance of their own space and family time. If they have siblings, particularly younger, time by themselves or time with friends without the younger ones around should prove popular and may help reduce any bickering. • Give them some chores to undertake in return for a little pocket money. Believe it or not, giving children this responsibility really can help with their development, and understanding the concept of being rewarded for good work. It also helps them to develop their saving skills. • Talk with your child about their friends, how they are finding school and discuss the challenges they are facing. Encourage your child to talk to you about anything that they are

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING www.kidaround.biz • February Issue 2023• 9 Festive Entertainment worried about or that other people are doing, encourage them to put themselves in other people’s shoes, to develop their empathy. • Encourage your child to help raise money for charity – explaining that other children aren’t as lucky as them, can help them be more selfless and encourage them to share more readily. • Get to know their friends’ families – even if it’s a chat in the playground whilst the kids are there • Let them have friends stay over – this gives them the opportunity to entertain and share their bedtime with a friend. Set the ground rules for them and give them a chance to show that they are ‘growing up’. • Get involved with their school – go to events and help out when you can. Setting the Rules • Set rules with your children for their behaviour, give a warning if they are breaking the rules to give them a chance to change their behaviour before they get themselves into trouble. • Praise your child, talk about their strengths and the things that you love about them. If you have lost your patience with them, (like we all do at times) then apologise and talk it through, like we expect them to do when they have lost their temper. Lead by example • Children who are confident and feel good about themselves will find it easier to resist peer pressure and will make better decisions for themselves. Do what you can to foster your child’s confidence. • Talk to your friends – share your experiences and ideas, it can be reassuring to find that you are all facing similar challenges.

Red Nose Day is back, bigger, better and bolder for 2023, with a new eco-friendly nose. Comic Relief is calling on all schools to take part and help fundraise for some fantastic causes. Pupils will also get the chance to see how Comic Relief is working to support vulnerable people both at home in the UK and around the globe. So now it’s time to plan that bake sale, set your class a challenge, get ready to dress red to toe and have the best day ever! More than 8000 schools have already signed up to take part and that number is expected to quadruple over the coming weeks. Schools around the UK, including London, Leicester and Yorkshire are taking part in exciting new challenges. In a fun-filled exercise, Belham Primary, in Peckham, London, is hosting a series of escape rooms. Once inside a locked room, the children will solve a series of puzzles and work together to find a key to get out. Green School Trust in Isleworth, London, is holding three weeks of fundraising activities, including a teacher dress up day, a penalty shootout and building up to March 17th, where they’re allowed to ditch their uniforms and dress all in red for a Red-out day. The fitness company, 3D Leisure, will be holding virtual PE classes in primary schools across the UK – titled ‘The Big Red Class’, with about 10,000 children expected to join in for some adrenalin filled activities.

Red Nose Day Coordinator, Trish Rowbotham, told Comic Relief: “If we have enough staff willing to get covered with paint again this year, we’ll probably do that challenge again as it was so successful. We’ll also do 'Guess the Character' where I create a PowerPoint for staff to use in their classroom which features 'hidden' characters’ - famous people who are only partially visible. Pupils pay 50p each to take part. And we’ll do the Big RND Quiz, a cake sale and whatever we can to help.” CLICK HERE for Free Resources Fundraising Pack can be downloaded here Images by: Jake Turney/ Comic Relief

Pour in the milk until you get a smooth batter. Heat a little of the oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium-low heat, and add 2 tbsp batter into the pan at a time to make small, round pancakes. You will need to do this in batches of two-three at a time. Cook for 3-4 mins until the edges are set, and bubbles are appearing on the surface. Flip the pancakes over and cook for another 2-3 mins until golden on both sides and cooked through. Keep warm in a low oven while you cook the remaining pancakes. Pancake Batter Recipe 125g plain flour or gluten-free plain flour 1 egg 250ml milk 1 tsp baking powder (optional for American style pancakes) Butter, for frying Put the flour, egg and pour in a quarter of the milk in a bowl and mix. Use an electric or balloon whisk to thoroughly combine the mixture. Once you have a paste, mix in the rest of the milk until lump free. Leave to rest for 20 mins. Stir again before using. Heat a small non-stick frying pan with a knob of butter. When the butter starts to foam, pour a small amount of the mixture into the pan and swirl around to coat the base – you want a thin layer. Cook for a few mins until golden brown on the bottom, then turn over and cook until golden on the other side. Repeat until you have used all the mixture, stirring the mixture between pancakes and adding more butter for frying as necessary Pancake Day: Tuesday 21 February I love pancake day - spending time cooking with the kids and eating delicious pancakes. Although the mess is a pain! Why not make a full day of it and do savoury pancakes for dinner followed by sweet, naughty pancakes for desert. Here's some recipes and ideas for you to try this year!

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING www.kidaround.biz • February Issue 2023• 23 Sweet Ideas Caramelised Banana and chocolate – Thickly slice banana– heat a frying pan, add 2 tsp of sugar and wait for it to melt and go golden brown add the banana and coat in the sugar – cook until soft. Add chocolate spread to warm pancake, add bananas, and enjoy! Also delicious with some ice-cream Vegan Friendly Apple and Cinnamon - Thinly slice apples, sprinkle with cinnamon powder and heat in over until golden brown, add to pancakes with a drizzle of golden syrup Strawberries & Cream - Fresh strawberries halved and cream (whipped) with a sprinkle of sugar to finish Vegan Friendly Peanut butter &Banana - spread peanut butter over pancake and top it with bananas - Lemon & Sugar – Traditional favourite- fresh or bottled lemon squeezed over the top along with a sprinkle of sugar Fresh Fruit & Cream – selection of fresh fruit of your choice – whip some fresh cream and dollop over the pancake Savoury Ideas Cheese and Ham – place grated cheese on pancake whilst hot in pan to melt the cheese, add a slice of ham and fold or roll and remove – ready to eat Egg, Chilli & Coriander – if you want a bit of spice, fry an egg with some finely sliced chilli (remove seeds for a milder spice), add to the pancake and sprinkle some roughly chopped/torn fresh coriander Vegan friendly Cheese (can replace with Feta), Potato & Spinach – make some course mash potato and add with crumbled feta and spinach and add to batter, ladle in to a hot pan and cook like you would a pancake – might be best using a flat spatula rather than tossing these though. Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese – cook pancakes and lay one on a plate, add a dollop of cream cheese and some smoked salmon and layer on another pancake – you can layer up as much as you like. Vegan Mushroom & Cheese – fry some sliced mushrooms with garlic until soft and remove from pan and add some chopped chives and parsley, grate some vegan cheese and add to the pancake batter(see vegan pancake recipe above) – cook pancakes and remove and add the mushrooms then fold into quarters

Children get a sense of achievement and also avoids them wasting money spending it on toys/items that they don’t really want or appreciate. When it’s their own money, they are more likely to save it and use it towards a more substantial item. Some people think that the best thing to do with kids and money is to freely give it to them. This is because they do not want their children to ever think about financial problems during their childhood but this isn't really the best approach. The value that is being taught with this is that someone should just give you money. It is important that children understand that money has to be earned. This can be done in a number ways. You may find purchasing a reward chart or collect marbles is an easy way to keep track. You can say for every 10 marbles or reward stickers you earn £1. Work with what your child gets excited about. Here' some ideas to get you going: Sell unwanted toys – whether they have grown too old or they just not playing with the toy any longer, as long as it’s in good working order – they can sell it. Use Facebook market place, vinted or ebay Car Washing Help your child design some flyers and they can post them through neighbours letter boxes offering this service. Pet Sitting (for older children) Friends and locals may work during the day and need someone to pop in to feed, stroke or walk their beloved pet. Again, you can help design flyers for this service. Help around the home All those chores piling up, set some daily chores for your child to do – emptying or loading dishwasher, hoovering, sorting washing in to piles. Kids enjoy helping at home and will love the money. Extra learning A great way to get some extra learning in, get activity books or set up the laptop and pay them to do some extra educational projects. Open a children account This will make your child feel very grown up and you can let them watch their money grow. Some banks offer pocket money accounts which is a prepaid account that the child gets a card to use in shops and you get to manage the account, this is great for helping them see what they are spending and managing their money. For information on these visit the money saving expert website here
