WORLD BOOK DAY

3 March 2022

World Book Day is a charity on a mission to help change children’s lives by making reading together and reading for
pleasure a habit for life.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator for success in life, more than family circumstances, educational
background, or income (Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development).

Sharing stories together for just ten minutes a day will encourage a love of reading and it’s fun for everyone! You can read
together anywhere and everywhere, from breakfast to bedtime! In the park, on the train, on the sofa, on a plane – reading
and sharing stories can happen anywhere at any time.

World Book Day offers every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Here are the £1 books
that children and young people are able to choose for FREE with their £1 book tokens.

World Book Day is a celebration of reading, authors, illustrators and books. It’s designated by UNESCO as a
worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

Children's Mental Health Week
Children's Mental Health Week is taking place on 7-13 February 2022.This year's theme is

Growing Together.

As parents and carers we play an important role in teaching children and young people how to understand and manage their
feelings as they grow up.

I’m worried about my child or young person
If their life is in immediate danger, call 999. If not, follow our advice for getting urgent help

What can I do at home?
Find time to talk, just the two of you – ‘Check in’ with them while you’re doing things together, so they get used to talking about
their feelings.
Play together – Play helps them to be curious, learn new things, solve problems and express feelings without words.
Be a role-model – Show how you cope with difficult feelings and look after yourself.

Where can I get more information? Conditions and challenges:
• Eating disorders (Beat)
Child mental health and wellbeing: • Addiction and drugs (FRANK)
• NHS • Abuse (NSPCC)
• Young Minds
• MindEd Difference and diversity:
• Place2Be’s blog • Special needs and disabilities (Scope)

• Bereavement and grief (Child Bereavement UK) • Gender diversity and transgender (Mermaids)
• Divorce and separation (Young Minds) • Race and ethnicity (BAATN)

Please note, this is not an exhaustive list and we are unable to signpost to every organisation. Please refer to the NHS or BBC
Action Line for a more comprehensive directory.

Does my child or young person need mental health support?
It’s normal to feel angry, sad, worried or stressed sometimes.
However, if they’re struggling to cope with those feelings, they might need support.

Look out for: Children and young people can be affected by big changes
• Sudden changes in behaviour like:
• Negative thoughts and low self-esteem • Death or illness in the family
• Arguing and fighting • Parents separating
• Sleep problems • Moving school or moving house
• Avoiding school or staying with you all the time • Tests and exams

Sky Brown’s Growth Story

At just 13, Sky Brown became Team GB’s youngest ever
Olympic medallist at the Tokyo Olympics. In the same
year, Sky - who is the world’s youngest professional
skateboarder - won the BBC Young Sports Personality
of the Year award.
For Children’s Mental Health Week 2022, Sky shares
her Growth Story with Places2Be.

Q. When you were a child, did you dream you would get to where you are today?

A. No! This is such a dream! I always loved to surf and skate but I never thought I would be
where I am now!

Q Has the journey been smooth or have there been obstacles along the way?

A I've always been skating and surfing for fun. There have been obstacles like getting hurt, but I keep
doing it because it's what I love.

Q. How did you cope with setbacks and disappointments?

A. It inspires me to keep going. I want to show other people that you can just go for it no matter what!

Q. Did you ever feel ‘stuck’ or like you were not progressing? A. I love challenges. Sometimes when I see
someone do a trick then I will do it until I get it! It is hard to stop until I get it!

Q. Who has helped you to grow into the person you are today?

A. Probably my brother Ocean. We do everything together.

Q. Do you feel you are still growing? What is your future ambition?

A. I'm going to keep surfing and skating, but also try new things too! I love dancing, jiu-jitsu, and other
sports too!

Gardening with kids

As we start to say goodbye to winter and welcome the spring next month, now is a great time to get
sowing those seeds with the kids. Getting kids involved with gardening and growing their own fruit/
vegetables helps them be more adventurous with trying new foods which they have grown themselves.
It also lets them play with mud – always a favourite with kids!

When sowing seeds, it’s always best to start the seeds inside on a windowsill or near a natural light
source, you can then transfer outside when the temperature rises above around 10c – hopefully end of
February. As you know, our weather is unpredictable so you may have to wait longer.

Vegetables you can start to sow mid-February

Aubergines Lettuce Onions Kale
Cucumbers Peppers Peas Leeks
Tomatoes Spinach
Celery Broccoli

You can pick up kids gardening tools from most DIY stores and some supermarkets. Alternatively, we
have sourced some online that have all your child needs to be a little gardener. I have also included
some ready to go kits - although, you can just by seeds and containers from the shops which will
probably be more cost effective.

MARCH

Beep Beep! Day with Timmy Time project, young children aged 2-7 can learn road safety basics and pass
on their knowledge to parents. Through free fun activities nurseries, schools and families can give children
skills to talk to grown-ups about what they can do to keep them safe. On average, 6 children get killed or
seriously injured every day. Here's some advice on how to teach your child how to walk and cross the road
safely.

Walking with young children

When your child is old enough to start walking with you, talk to them about how they must always hold your hand. Make
sure hand-holding is your number one rule. If your child is likely to pull away from you, use safety reins or a wrist strap.
Keep children on the inside, away from traffic, in case they trip.
As you walk, teach young children the words and ideas they need to understand the dangers of traffic. Teach them that:
• traffic is hard and fast and can hurt and kill people, because people are much slower and soft;
• it’s important to stay away from roads, hold hands with a grown up, and not to run near roads;
• traffic is also smelly and can hurt your lungs – this is why it’s better to walk and not drive cars.

Using roads independently

Many children aged eight or over are able to learn to use roads independently, although some take longer to reach this
stage.
When you and your child decide it is safe to allow them to walk independently, teach them and keep reminding them
about the importance of crossing safely using the Green Cross Code (stop somewhere safe where you can see, listen, look
right, look left, look right again, keep listening, and only cross when you are sure it is safe).
Help children to plan the safest possible route for their journey to school, the park, shops or their friends' houses.
Hopefully you have safe pavements and crossing places and a 20mph speed limit in your community. If you don’t, then
it’s a good idea to campaign for change to keep your family and others safe.
CLICK HERE to see how you can get involved!

St. Margaret’s Prep Celebrates an Excellent Inspection Outcome EDUCATION

St. Margaret’s Prep School, in Gosfield, North Essex is a happy and caring school where pupils enjoy every aspect of school life,
independent school inspectors have found.
The quality of pupils’ academic achievements and the quality of their personal development was awarded the highest rating of
‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
Inspectors found St. Margaret’s pupils, from Nursery to Year 6, to be highly engaged, enthusiastic and committed learners who make
excellent progress across the curriculum, noting their exemplary attitude to learning and above national average results. They also
recognised the high pastoral care provided by staff focusing on the well-being of each individual to ensure that they all flourish.
The report continues to elaborate on the fact that the pupils enjoy learning and have an excellent rapport with their teachers and
that pupils display excellent self-esteem and confidence, with parents agreeing that the school helps their child to be confident and
independent.

“Pupils relate to each other exceptionally well and are most caring towards one another.”

St Mary’s is an independent school in Colchester, Essex for
girls age 3-16 and boys age 3-4.

The school is proud to have charitable status, meaning all fees are reinvested into the school.

Academically outstanding
The Lower School is ranked the 12th highest performing preparatory
school in England by the Sunday Times. There is also an impressive
11+ pass rate for those who choose to sit the exam.
At the Senior School, in 2021, 99% of all GCSEs at St Mary’s were
at Grade 4 and above. Such success is achieved by tailoring the
education to suit the needs of each individual in small classes and
by giving the girls the encouragement and support they need to aim
high.

A wealth of opportunities
St Mary’s strongly believe that success in life comes from more than
just impressive exam results. A brilliantly balanced education is
offered in order to develop exceptionally well-rounded individuals.
With a variety of clubs, enrichment activities, music and drama
productions, visits and experiences on offer, there’s ample
opportunity for girls at the school to learn new skills and develop
talents.
There are numerous positions of responsibility available to the girls,
which help develop their leadership skills, and team spirit is fostered
through initiatives such as the School Council and School Houses.
Mrs Nicola Griffiths, the new Principal at St Mary’s, firmly believes that
all-girls schools provide an environment free from stereotypes, where
girls thrive academically and where they feel confident to put themselves
forward for leadership roles.

Positive environment
St Mary’s purpose built Kindergarten, with its own enclosed outdoor
multi-sensory play area, is the perfect place for young children to
flourish.
For young people to thrive, St Mary’s believe they must feel confident,
relaxed and secure. Every child is known and understood at St Mary’s
and the girls feel comfortable challenging themselves and asking
questions.
Before children even start at St Mary’s, time is taken to get to know
them and their families, and there are initiatives in place from
induction programmes to buddy systems to help students settle
in. There’s a very positive culture at St Mary’s and visitors often
comment on how staff and students are always smiling.
The school believes in instilling the values of respect and courtesy,
and through its charity and outreach work, the students develop a
strong sense of community. St Mary’s is a leading Eco School and the
students get a strong sense of caring for the environment as a result.
And as a global member of the Round Square Organisation, those
who attend St Mary’s benefit from international links, which helps to
broaden their horizons.
In this positive environment young people develop the strength of
character and the self-belief they need to make the very most of the
life that lies ahead.
Attend an Open Day in March or arrange a private tour to find out more about the brilliantly balanced education on
offer at St Mary’s: www.stmaryscolchester.org.uk

EDUCATION

Brentwood Preparatory School

At Brentwood Preparatory School we are privileged to be with children
as they embark on one of the greatest journeys in life: education. It is
in these early years that they begin to investigate the world with great
expectation, interest and energy. It is in these early years that we can
show them the world is a feast for the curious and full of opportunities.
wWe help our pupils to solve problems. In partnership with parents,
we teach them to persevere after setbacks, adopt a growth mindset
and challenge the norm. We encourage them to ask questions in class
and take control of their own learning. Of course, they work hard and
enjoy great success in and out of the classroom, and once they’ve left
us, many go on to use and develop their leadership skills and achieve
beyond their expectations, always remembering what Brentwood has
taught them.
Right from the age of three, we welcome children into a community
that is small enough to feel secure, but large enough to offer a huge
breadth of experiences. Pupils are encouraged to be enterprising
and develop their own ideas. Whether they are taking part in the
School Council or joining in one of the many clubs, sports and drama
activities, our pupils soon develop their own sense of responsibility.
They learn to care about their work, to value their contribution to the
wider school community and through many pupil-led fundraising
initiatives, their eyes are opened to the world beyond school.
Academically, our pupils are high achievers. Our curriculum
is augmented by inclusive academic enrichment and activity
programmes.
Our staff teach with great energy, flair and sensitivity and because
we keep class sizes small, our Form teachers get to know their pupils
really well. Our Matron and the Chaplain play central roles in taking
care of the children and the House system enables each pupil to
build relationships with older peers. What this means is that across
the school there is always a listening ear or a helping hand around
whenever a pupil needs it.
Visitors often remark about the genuine warmth they find on their
visits and I truly believe it is this most important attribute in our
success. As we all know, the simple truth is - happy children learn best
- so we focus on giving our pupils a positive start in their education; a
positive beginning that will influence the rest of their lives.
I encourage you to find time to come and discover this for
yourself.
Much has changed since 1892, but our motto of Virtue, Learning &
Manners remains and you will see that in droves when you visit us.

Let’s go ride a bike - tips for teaching your children

Fraught parents trying to teach their children to ride Christmas present bikes are being given top
tips on how to get started.
The experts at Bobbin Bikes have put together advice for parents struggling to teach their
children how to ride a bike.
Patience is key when it comes to cycling lessons but there are some simple steps mums and dads
can follow to make it a little easier.
Having the right size bike and essential safety equipment is a good place to start as well as
picking the right location for those early lessons.
A spokesperson for Bobbin Bikes said: “Once you can ride a bike, you never forget but those early
lessons can be stressful for both you and your children. Keeping calm and following their lead is
a must.
“There are some simple steps to follow. Encouraging your child to find their balance without the
pedals on is a must and will help them grow in confidence.
“Slowly add the pedals back on and keep practicing. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect -
that’s definitely true when it comes to learning how to ride a bike.”
Here are Bobbin Bike’s tips for teaching children to ride a bike:

Teaching a child to ride

Good equipment
Before you even start, make sure you have the right size bike for your child and the safety equipment
you need. A helmet is essential. It should be level with a gap of around two fingers between the
eyebrow and helmet. Straps and adjustments should be firm but not uncomfortable. Knee and elbow
pads may be worth investing in for the early days - falling off is all part of learning to ride a bike.
Pick your location
Finding the right location for those early lessons is important for building confidence. A packed park
where they may bump into friends is not a good idea. Instead try early lessons in the back garden or
find a quiet spot where they can practise without distractions. Avoid learning on grass - tarmac is a
much easier surface to learn to ride.
Balance
Balance is key in learning to ride a bike. Try removing the pedals to allow your little one to push
themselves along with their feet. After a short distance, encourage them to lift their feet off the ground
and use the brakes to stop.
Using the brakes
Show your child how to use the brakes and make sure they’re comfortable using them.
Adding the pedals
Add one pedal and then the other once your child has got the hang of balance and using the brakes.
Walk them holding on to the bike and as confidence grows, start to let go. Keep repeating this and
you’ll quickly build confidence.
No pressure
Every child learns differently - you may have one natural cyclist and another who will take more time.
So be patient and don’t pressurise. Follow the lead of your kids. Remember, cycling is all about having
fun.
