Mirror, mirror, on the wall, don't miss the fairest pantomime of them all!

Further casting has been announced by
The Cliffs Pavilion for this year’s spectacular
production of the fairest Panto in the land, Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs, from Friday 9
December 2022.

The Cliffs Pavilion have announced a stellar
line up for this year’s Panto, ‘Snow White and
the Seven Dwarfs'. Leading this year’s cast are
‘Britain’s Got Talent’ winners and Street Dance
sensations Ashley Banjo & Diversity who will
star as The Prince and his Guards. Joining
them is comedian and magician Pete Firman as
Muddles, Kirsty Ingram in the title role of Snow
White and multi-award-winning star of stage and
screen, Myra Dubois as the Wicked Queen.

Making a return to Southend this year, local dancer, choreographer and creative director, Ashley Banjo
along with innovative dance group, Diversity, will be leading this year’s cast at The Cliffs Pavilion. Ashley
and Diversity are no strangers to Southend having performed in 2019’s production of Robin Hood and his
Merry Men. Ashley and Diversity have become household names since winning Britain’s Got Talent in 2009
and Ashley is well known for his television roles including Dancing on Ice and the Emmy and BAFTA award
winning The Read Full Monty.

Pete Firman is the one of the UK’s leading comedian and magician as well as a TV regular, most recently
seen on ‘The Next Great Magician’ (ITV1), ‘Tonight at the London Palladium’ (ITV1), ‘Let’s Sing and Dance for
Comic Relief’ (BBC One), ‘Tommy Cooper Forever’ (ITV1) and ‘The Generation Game’ (BBC One). In 2020
he presented CITV’s smash hit immersive gameshow ‘Don’t Unleash the Beast’, which returned for a second
series at the end of 2021.

Kirsty Ingram graduated with a First-Class BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre from The Arts Educational Schools,
where she was awarded the Ian Fleming Award. Kirsty is returning to play Snow White after playing the role
last year in Newcastle. Kirsty has also performed as Rumpleteazer in the European tour of Cats and Amber
Von Tussle in the national tour of Hairspray.

The self-declared ‘Siren from South Yorkshire’, the larger-than-life Myra DuBois became a household name in
2020 making the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent. Alongside entertaining the nation on BGT, Myra has been
seen performing across London and UK. Myra’s solo show Dead Funny played at the Edinburgh Festival
Fringe and made its international debut at the Sydney Opera House.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is staged by Crossroads Pantomimes, the world’s biggest pantomime
producer, led by Michael Harrison and the creative team behind recent The Cliffs Pavilion successes including
last year’s production of Cinderella.

The pantomime will be spectacularly brought to life with an abundance of comedy, sensational song and
dance numbers, fabulous costumes, and stunning scenery. Throw in a magical mirror, seven friendly dwarfs, a
beautiful princess, a handsome prince and plenty of audience participation and you have the perfect recipe to
outwit the Wicked Queen and let love prevail in this glittering festive treat for all ages.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs begins its spirited adventure at The Cliffs Pavilion from Friday 9th
December until Saturday 31st December 2022. For more information visit www.thecliffspavilion.co.uk

Anti-Bullying Week 14 - 18 November: Reach Out

Anti-Bullying Week 2022 is coordinated in England and Wales by the Anti-Bullying Alliance. It will take
place from 14 to 18 November 2022 and has the theme Reach Out. The week will kick off with Odd
Socks Day on Monday 14th November, where adults and children where odd socks to celebrate what
makes us all unique.
Bullying affects millions of lives and can leave us feeling hopeless. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If
we challenge it, we can change it. And it starts by reaching out.
Whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, let’s reach out and show each other the
support we need. Reach out to someone you trust if you need to talk. Reach out to someone you know is
being bullied. Reach out and consider a new approach.
And it doesn’t stop with young people. From teachers to parents and influencers to politicians, we all
have a responsibility to help each other reach out. Together, let’s be the change we want to see. Reflect
on our own behaviour, set positive examples and create kinder communities.
It takes courage, but it can change lives. So, this Anti-Bullying Week, let’s come together and reach out to
stop bullying.

Odd Socks Day

All you need to do is wear odd socks! It's a great way to celebrate what makes us all unique in Anti-
Bullying Week! Odd Socks Day is being held on Monday 14th November this year. Odd Socks Day is
delivered in partnership with CBeebies and CBBC star Andy Day and his band, Andy and the Odd Socks.

A Parents Survival Guide

We all think others are coping better with parenting than we are, when reality is, we all have days
where it feels impossible. Raising kids can be rewarding and somewhat stressful. Let's face it, our
kids know exactly how to push our buttons at times and adding to this we also have to keep up with
modern-day life-balance: working, cleaning, and just about everything else.
If you think your child is unhappy or if you are worried about their behaviour, it’s easy to be hard on
yourself and think you aren’t doing a good job - that is not the case, you are doing great. However, to
help, here's some tips for any parent who is worried about their child, or their own parenting skills:

You and Your Child

• Make sure they know you love them and are proud of them. Even when things are busy or stressful,
and it feels like you are in survival mode, a word or a hug can reassure them a huge amount. Praise
them for what they do well, and encourage them to try new things.

• Be honest about your feelings - you don’t have to
be perfect. We all get things wrong and shout or
say unkind things from time to time. If this happens,
say sorry to your child afterwards and explain why
it happened, They will learn from you that it’s OK to
make mistakes and that it doesn’t make you a bad
person.

• Be clear about what is and isn’t acceptable - and tell
them why. Children need to know what is OK and
what isn’t, and what will happen if they cross the line.
Follow through on what you say as otherwise they
may get confused or stop respecting the boundaries.

• Own your own role - you are the parent, so don’t be
afraid to take tough decisions. If your child sees you
are scared of their reaction and always give in to
them, it can make them feel very powerful, which can
be frightening. Children need to know that you are
there to keep them safe.

18 October Issue 22 • www.kidaround.biz TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL [email protected]

Helping Your Child

• Worrying or difficult behaviour might be short-lived, so give it
some time. All children go through stages of feeling anxious
or angry and they can show this in lots of ways, for example,
tantrums, crying, sleeping problems or fighting with
friends or siblings. They might be adapting to a change
in the family or in their school life, or just trying out
new emotions, and will generally grow out of worrying
behaviour on their own or with family support.

• Talk to your child: Even young children can understand
about feelings and behaviour if you give them a chance to
talk about it. Take it gently and give them examples of what
you mean, for example, ‘When you said you hated Molly, you
looked really angry. What was making you so cross?’, or ‘When you
can’t get to sleep, is there anything in your mind making you worried?’

• With older children, they might not want to talk at first. Let them know you are concerned about
them, and are there if they need you. Sending an email or a text can work better if this is the way
your child likes to communicate.

• Ask your child what they think would help - they often have good ideas about solving their own
problems.

• If you can, talk to your child's other parent about your worries, when the child is not around. They
might have a different take on what’s going on. Try and sort out how to deal with the behaviour
together so you are using the same approach, and can back each other up. Children are quick to spot
if parents disagree, and can try and use this to get their own way.

Looking After Yourself

• If your child is having problems, don’t be too hard on yourself or blame yourself. Although it can be
upsetting and worrying if your child is having a bad time, and it makes your relationship with them
feel more stressful, you are not a bad parent. Children often take it out on those closest to them, so
you might be feeling the effect of their very powerful emotions.

• If you had a difficult time growing up yourself, or have had emotional problems or mental health
problems, it can be very worrying to think that the same thing might happen to your child. But
the love and care you show them and the fact that you are trying to help will protect against this.
Getting help for them and perhaps for yourself too can give them the best chance of feeling better.

• If things are getting you down, it’s important to recognise this. Talk to someone you trust and see
what they think. Many people go on struggling with very difficult situations because they feel they
should be able to cope, and don’t deserve any help.

• Friends and family can often help - don’t be afraid to ask them to have your child for a bit if you
need some time out to sort out your own stuff. You can repay them when things get better for you!

• It’s easy to say take some time for yourself but in reality this may not feel possible. You might be too
busy, exhausted or hard up for exercise or hobbies. But even a night in with a friend, a box set or
your favourite dinner can help - with wine:).

• Go to your GP if things are really getting on top of you. Asking for some support from your doctor
or a referral to a counselling service is a sign of strength. You can’t help your child if you are not
being supported yourself. Some people worry their parenting will be judged and their children will
be taken away if they admit they are struggling to cope. This should only happen if a child is being
abused or neglected and the role of professionals is to support you to look after your child as well
as you can.

Help struggling families this Christmas – charity app connects with
local food banks to make donating simple

If you’re thinking about ways to support others this festive season, why not connect with your local food bank using the BanktheFood
charity app and donate? BanktheFood will ping you a list of urgently needed items and show the location of the local donation
stations.
As more people struggle with the cost of living, food banks across the country are struggling to keep up with demand. BanktheFood
is a free charity-run app, run solely by volunteers, that enables users to find and connect with local food banks. It sends a push
notification of the most needed items every time the food bank runs low on essentials. The app will even send a list of what’s urgently
needed on arrival at the local supermarket, enabling shoppers to pick up a few extra items and donate at the local donation station.
And it’s not just food that’s sought after. Many food banks also need pet food, toiletries and personal hygiene products; some will look
to collect Christmas crackers and small toys as gifts for children over the festive period. If food banks have fridges, they may also
collect and redistribute fresh food. And as BanktheFood shares what your local food bank is after in real time, it reduces the need for
expensive storage.
Emma Spring, CEO of BanktheFood, explains: “Christmas is often a tough time for people, and food banks will be a lifeline for many. If
we can encourage people to use the free BanktheFood app, we can help community food banks get what they need when they need it
and ensure nobody goes without. It makes a huge difference.”
Jamie Ginns CEO Greenwich food bank, explains: “BanktheFood has been brilliant. It helps us tell our supporters exactly what we
need. As we respond to the cost of living crisis, donations targeted at what we most urgently need are vital for us to continue to do
what we do. BanktheFood users can record their donation on the app so that we can collect it immediately if needed. This means
that we can continue to offer balanced food parcels. The number of people reliant on food banks has really increased; this app helps
make sure everyone is looked after.”
Things your local food bank might need:
• Cereal
• Soup
• Rice
• Pasta Sauce
• Tinned meat, fish, fruit and veg
• Tea/coffee
• Tinned fruit
• Biscuits
• Toiletries
• Hygiene products

Check the BanktheFood app to find exactly what your local food bank needs.

The story of Halloween

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on 31st October,
and this Halloween will be on a Saturday...YAY! The tradi-
tion originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain,
when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward
off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated
the 1st November as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All
Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.
The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later
Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of ac-
tivities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive
gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
