Dear West Cypress Residents,
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Cypress Neighbors West – a magazine geared solely to you and the people around you. This publication is all about your neighborhood: the people and pets who live nuzzled between Coyote Creek and Evergreen Park, the family businesses that tie us together in the community, and our youngsters who play ball on Oak Knoll Field. Consider us your snapshot into the goings-on in your community, your need-to- know resource for all things West Cypress.
Although we are long-time residents of La Palma, we feel deeply connected to Cypress through our friendships, our faith, and our boys' activities. We’ve found ourselves spending most of our time socializing, shopping, and dining in Cypress! This city has no lack of good-hearted people and positive stories. We will be coming out monthly with features on residents, as well as expert advice from area professionals.
Our mission?
To help you get to know who’s living down your block, up the street, or around the corner. Our personal approach is a bit old- fashioned, but we believe there’s still a place for featuring the personalities and happenings that make up Cypress life.
I'm hoping that you’ll overwhelm our email boxes with suggestions and ideas – tell us about your upcoming community events, your student athletes, your real estate success stories, and your Cypress insider tips. We want to know – and feature – all of it.
See you around town,
Mark Scheier

Get to Know
The Garcias
BY MICHELLE MURRAY
We would like to thank The Joe Soto Team for sponsoring this month’s feature story.
Ten-year-old Olivia Garcia is a budding hostess. She knew it wouldn’t be easy to throw a surprise 40th birthday party for both of her parents – but with the help of her encouraging grandma, Jane Lensch, she was able to pull it off. Her parents, Anthony and Joanna Garcia, were definitely surprised as they approached the house and saw friends gathered to celebrate the milestones.
The party was held at the same Cypress house that Jane and her late husband Bob have lived in since the 1970s. The Garcias moved in with Jane, Joanna’s mom, after Bob’s passing more than two years ago, and they’ve enjoyed a special closeness since that time.
Anthony and Joanna met back in 1996 when they were both sophomores at Cypress High School. Joanna went on to graduate from Cypress College, where Anthony also attended. They were married in 2004 at El Dorado Church, the drive-in church that used to be in East Long Beach. The past 16 years of marriage have all been sweet, but one of Anthony’s best memories is when Joanna told him he was going to be a dad.
Joanna started her career at the age of 16, working at Little School of the West on Cerritos Avenue. After holding positions at a sign shop and various medical offices, she returned to her origins at Little School of the West, where she now serves as the assistant director.
Anthony has worked in the telecom industry and was also an employee for the City of Long Beach. He then made the decision to further his education at Hope International University. After earning a bachelor of science degree in Christian Ministry, Anthony is happily serving as a youth pastor at West Cypress Church. He also is employed by 3M in the Dental Division.
West Cypress Church not only gets the benefit of having Anthony as a youth pastor, but he also volunteers as the worship leader. He enjoys singing and playing the guitar, and Olivia is working

on learning to play, as well. Joanna pitches in by helping out with special events for the youth group. Olivia also lives out the example of serving that her parents have set for her by visiting seniors in nursing homes and taking care of cats for friends on vacation. Serving really is a family value to them! If the Garcias had to choose a family motto to live by, it would be “Do unto others as you would want them to do for you.”
When they’re not working or serving others, the Garcias try to make family time for walks at the El Dorado Nature Center. Another place they enjoy nature together is at the bay in Long Beach where they try to get in as much kayaking as possible. When Olivia is on spring break from school, Anthony and Joanna take the week off as well so they can vacation as a family to experience the beautiful state of California – seeing places like Lake Tahoe, Cambria, and Moonstone Beach.
When not spending time on traveling adventures, Olivia has many interests and hobbies. She has taken various dance classes, tried horseback riding, and enjoys making videos while baking. Cooking is an interest that the whole family enjoys, and the Garcias would love to one day open a taco truck or restaurant. As for Olivia, her goal is to take the experience of cooking with her parents and use it to appear on a kids baking challenge TV show.
Cooking isn't the only activity Olivia and her family have fun with. While she was in second grade, Olivia’s class hatched chickens, and she got to keep two of them – naming them

Cutie and Peep. One mishap the Garcias have experienced by being chicken owners was when Peep flew diagonally over two fences into a neighbor’s yard early on a Saturday morning. Always ready to roll with the punches, Olivia and Anthony had to walk around the block to knock on the neighbor’s door to ask if they could retrieve their wayward pet from the backyard. That’s one way to get to know your neighbors!
There are many things that Jane, Anthony, Joanna, and Olivia enjoy about their Cypress neighborhood. The family loves the people at West Cypress Church, where many are now life-long friends who have been with them through the highs and lows of life – from the joyous birth of Olivia to the mournful death of Bob. Except for the occasional chicken incident, Cypress is a quiet neighborhood, close to the beach, with great schools. The neighbors are friendly and many have known each other for quite a long time and look out for each other.
Just like Olivia’s gift of a surprise party showed, the Garcias' message to their community is to stay friendly and enjoy each day in the wonderful city of Cypress – because each day is indeed a gift.

A Pandemic of
KINDNESS
BY MICHELLE MURRAY
In the midst of the worldwide spread of an invisible virus, I propose that we encourage the spread of another condition: kindness!
This week, a coworker in another department was diagnosed with COVID-19. Knowing that she is a single mother with two little boys, I was concerned about how she would manage for two weeks of quarantine. I contacted her to see what would help her out, what types of food and toys her boys like, and what things she needs. Other coworkers wanted to help and generously gave towards the cause. After work, I picked up my youngest daughter and off we went onto our mission of spreading kindness. What a fun shopping spree! We picked out easy-to-prepare meals and deli foods, breakfast items, kid snacks, treats from the bakery, and toys for the little ones. We added a get-well card and some gift cards for home delivery options.
My daughter and I unloaded the items onto my coworker’s porch while she and her sons waved and smiled from behind their front window. What a fun and contagious feeling it is to spread a little kindness! I’m inviting everyone to think of ways that you, too, can start the spread!
Do you have a neighbor who has difficulty getting out? Go grocery shopping for them!
Is someone you know a little lonely? A phone call, front porch visit, or even a card could make their day!
If you know of a person who’s a little down, give them some flowers, a plant, or a gift card.
Anne Frank’s words ring so true: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Be creative...involve your family or coworkers. Let’s keep this pandemic of kindness growing, this year and beyond!

BUSINESS PROFILE
SEASTAR PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY:
A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL
BY MICHELLE MURRAY | PHOTO BY MARY AWESHEE PHOTOGRAPHY
Dr. Cherish enjoying a moment snuggling with her son
Fun. Welcoming. Enjoyable. These aren’t words often associated with childhood experiences in a dental office, but Dr. Cherish Leung is on a mission to change that narrative. In the three and a half years that she’s been at the helm of Seastar Pediatric Dentistry in Cypress, she has made a concerted effort to give all families an excellent dental experience in a positive and safe environment.
Dr. Cherish decided she wanted to be a pediatric dentist when she was seven. She has achieved that goal through a lot of education, training, and hard work. After being born and raised in Torrance, Dr. Cherish went on to earn many college degrees, starting with an undergraduate from UCLA and concluding by graduating with honors from the dental school at Western University of Health Sciences. After completing three years of residency and practice in New York, she returned to Southern California, the home she loves.
Seastar Pediatric Dentistry uses state-of-the-art materials and equipment and offers fun, kid-friendly decor. Along with movies and entertainment, they also have a large costume rack that kids choose from if they’d like to dress up for their appointment. Seastar schedules special days where kids are invited to wear their pajamas, have silly hair, or wear funny socks to their visit. There are also several contests and raffles held throughout the year. Parents who come in with tales of growing up with a dislike of dental offices leave with a new mindset, asking if they, too, can become patients!
Dr. Cherish treats all of her patients with quality care, regardless of what insurance they carry, and accommodates any special needs. She also feels a special joy in meeting other moms, calling them mommy warriors. In expressing how it helps her in her daily work, she shares, “As a mom boss, I am able to relate with my patients’ parents about the struggles of parenting, toothbrushing, toddlerhood, and parental worries. I am able to draw on these experiences to provide practical advice. And I am able to connect with my patients and their parents in a joyous and meaningful way!”
Dr. Cherish loves being in Cypress and does things to engage with the community. Even those who aren’t part of the Seastar Pediatric Dentistry family can participate in events held every year. Some such events are the Halloween candy buy-back, where Seastar pays $1 per pound for any unwanted Halloween candy and donates it to the troops, and the Toys for Tots donation drive during the holiday season.
When not at the office, Dr. Cherish enjoys spending time with her husband, Steven, and their two-and-a-half-year-old son, Valor. They enjoy being outdoors and attending sporting events, especially Dodgers and Kings games. When not in the middle of a pandemic, they are regulars at Disneyland, where Valor loves the bands and characters. Dr. Cherish also enjoys reading (especially the classics and sci-fi/fantasy), crafting, and deep-sea fishing. Ironically, she doesn’t eat seafood – so she shares whatever she catches.
If you’re looking for great specialty dental care tailored to the needs of children, visit Dr. Cherish Leung at Seastar Pediatric Dentistry. Their office is at 5001 Cerritos Avenue, Suite B, in Cypress, and you can get more information at seastarpediatricdentistry.com or by calling 714-723-6271.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS
We were so excited to launch our Calendar of Events page for you. However, COVID-19 had other plans. The pandemic has crushed events pages around the globe. Although businesses and events are opening back up in California, always make sure the event is still “on” before you attend. If the year 2020 has taught us anything, it is to be ready to go with the flow. Virtual tours and eBooks are alternatives for entertainment and exploration from home without the chance of cancellations, having to wear masks, or practice social distancing!

We not only love to get to know our Cypress neighbors, but also the pets that own them. Here are some snapshots from around town. We hope you like meeting them, too!
PET CORNER
Chonk (brown) & Dozer (white)
are six-month-old brothers who do everything together. Sometimes they even appear to be joined at the hip. They love chasing each other around the house and taking long walks through their neighborhood.
Cutie the chicken is two years old. Her hobbies include lap-sitting, dust bathing, digging holes in the yard, eating worms, and crying when she sees squirrels. She loves to explore all areas of the yard and eat grubs, dry worms, and all plants. Her owner, Olivia, is a member of the featured family this month!
Hopper is the Alpha dog in his house. He is an eight-year-old mix who loves the outdoors and especially loves taking his people for walks in Veteran’s Park. He really loves camping and posing for pictures.
