DTO 2020 Newsletters

January-2020

®

Vol XLIII, ISSUE I Greetings Sorors,
January 2020
It is with profound honor and humility that I begin this new and amazing journey with
The Pink and Green Newsletter is you. I thank you for your confidence in my ability to serve our chapter and community
published monthly, with excellence and enthusiasm. I am excited about our journey, the opportunities
and challenges, because I know we have the ability as Alpha Kappa Alpha women to do
January thru December, as a service extraordinary things. Since 1946, Delta Theta Omega has been providing “service to all
to sorors in Mobile and Baldwin mankind” in this community, and in 2021 we will celebrate our 75th Anniversary as a
Counties. chapter. What a legacy of sisterhood and service!
Inaugural Staff
Soror E. Jean Tolbert (Founder) Today, how do we honor our sorority’s founders led by Soror Ethel Hedgeman Lyle,
Soror Margaret Munnerlyn and our chapter’s charter members as we Exemplify Excellence Through
Soror Zella Jackson Sustainable Service? I believe we must make individual and collective
Soror Verma Maxwell** commitments to what Soror Ethel dreamed for our dear sisterhood in 1908. She
Soror Lula Turner** dreamed of “creating a support network for women with like minds coming together
**Deceased for mutual uplift and coalescing their talents and strengths for the benefit of others.”

Chapter Location: Sorors, as your new servant leader, I am making a renewed commitment to Soror
4363 Downtowner Loop N. Ethel’s dream as we rededicate ourselves to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and all
that she represents. I am making a commitment to join my talents and strengths with
Mobile, Alabama 36609 your talents and strengths to benefit the people of our community as we support and
PO Box 72 uplift each other.

Mobile, Alabama 36601 Madam Supreme Basileus Glenda Glover and Madam Regional Director Mitzi Dease
Paige have provided us with an EXCELLENT framework of leadership development
and programs to perpetuate our service. We have the resources, but we must
MAXIMIZE them. We know how to plan, but we must MOBILIZE our plan. We
have a community of people to serve and we will MESMERIZE them!

Let’s do what we know how to do. Let’s blaze new trails, create new partnerships,
examine new and exciting ideas, explore ever-changing technologies, think beyond
where we have been and what we have done. As our vision states, we are “a premier
and unique sisterhood of distinguished professional women united in service.” And
serve we will while looking “oh so pretty” in the process!

Grateful to Serve,

CONNECTIONS needs your support!

Our chapter is sponsoring a Political Forum on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 6:00p.m. at the Ben May
Main Library, 701 Government Street. Our Connections Committee, led by Soror Linda Wooten, is
coordinating this forum in partnership with the NAACP, Blacks In Government, League of Women Voters,
Revelation Baptist Church, and the Mobile Public Library. We need 50 sorors to support this activity in
response to Supreme Basileus Glenda Glover asking all chapters to get more politically involved. Text
Soror Linda at (251) 554-5644 to let her know she has your support. Hope to see you there!

The Basileus wants to hear from YOU

Have you submitted your responses to the Basileus’ survey? If not, check your email and submit it today!
Your answers to a few questions will help guide the strategic direction for our chapter over the coming
weeks, months and years. Every sorors’ input and feedback is welcomed and critical to DTO’s success. If
you didn’t receive the survey, send an email to aka.sheronthames@gmail.com.

Officers’ and Committee Chairmen’s Training

Sorors Ramona Hill and Deborah Robinson will conduct Leadership Development Training on Saturday,
February 1, 2020 from 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. If you are an officer, committee chairman, or desire to
become either, this training is for you. We will utilize the data gathered from the online survey to chart
the plans for our chapter. Officers (9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.) and Committee Chairmen (12:00noon to
4:00p.m.)

Regional Transportation

If you plan to ride the chapter bus to the Regional Conference, please sign up and pay a $25 deposit to
the financial officers during the January meeting. The Transportation Committee will contact each rider
with the final costs based on the number of riders.

Chapter and Foundation Dues

Sorors, please remember to write TWO checks: one for chapter dues and one for foundation and housing. Chapter dues
($250 plus $20 late fee after 12/31/2019) should be given to the chapter financial officers, Sorors Veronica Rogers and
Jennifer Tyus and made payable to AKA DTO. Foundation ($120) and housing ($150 or $300 if applicable) payments
should be given to DTO Foundation officers and made payable to DTO Foundation.

DTO Foundation

Please join us for the year-end report of the DTO Foundation. Get answers to the questions you have always wanted to
know but were afraid to ask. Vote your choice for the new members of the DTO Foundation Board of Directors. We look
forward to your attendance. Soror Betty Pugh, DTO Foundation Board President

The active membership of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has grown to 84,718 members in 1,022 chapters. Our chapter has
increased as well by welcoming seventy-three (73) new members and numerous reactivated and transfer sorors. Let’s continue
our growth by reclaiming our INACTIVE PEARLS on REACTIVATION DAY January 15, 2020, our Founders’ Day.

Our Membership Committee, led by Soror Tammy Crook, has planned an entire day for us to “dine with an inactive soror” at BJ’s
Restaurant, 3748 Airport Blvd, as well as celebrate Founders’ Day. Twenty percent of our purchases of food and non-alcoholic
drinks will be donated back to our chapter for scholarships. Come out anytime between 11:00a.m. and 9:00p.m. and join the fun!
