The 4 Regions
of Texas

Unit 1: Natural Texas

The Mountains &
Basins Region

The Mountains and Basins region
is located in West Texas. The

climate in this region is very hot
and arid (dry). The physical

landform includes mountains
and basins with cactus and
yucca as part of its vegetation.

The Great Plains Region

The Great Plains region is located
in the Northern and Central part of

Texas. The climate is typically hot
but because of its high plains the
summer and winter are cooler in
the Great Plains compared to other
regions. Buffalos once roamed in
the Great Plains and the land is
suitable to grow corn and wheat.

The North Central Plains Region

The North Central Plains are located
in the north central portion of Texas.

The geographic sections of the
region are the Rolling Plains, Cross
Timbers, and the Great Prairie. The
plains change from flat to rolling
hills and includes valleys. There is
slightly more rainfall in the North
Central Plains than the Great Plains.
Here, crops such as cotton, grain,

and wheat are grown.

The Coastal Plains Region

The Coastal Plains is Texas largest
geographic region. The climate

along the region’s coastline is hot
and humid. The land is typically
flat and includes plenty of rivers
and bodies of water. The
northern part of the Coastal
Plains includes plenty of forest,
also known as the Piney Woods.
