2016-2017 Oregon Food Bank -SOS Local Food Guide

Local Foods

G u i d e Buylocal
Eat local
2016-2017

Your guide to local foods and goods, the farmers who grow
them, the artisans who craft them, and the grocers and
restaurants dedicated to using locally grown products.

What’s Local?

“Local food” refers
to food produced
within a certain
distance of the
consumer. Since
there is not a sin-
gle definition of
“local foods” with
respect to a geo-
graphic distance,
consumers are left
to decide what lo-
cal and regional food means to them. For the
purposes of this Guide, we have chosen to in-
clude food/goods produced within Adams, Can-
yon, Gem, Malheur, Payette, and Washington
counties.

Brown's Buffalo Ranch began in 1972. Currently owned and operat-
ed by Tim, Debbie and Garrett Brown, this adventure started with
only 3 animals by a quiet yet enthusiastic retired farmer, Glenn
Brown and wife Peggy. Beginning with only the process of one ani-
mal in 1988, their little empire has grown from a hobby to the main
business for their farm. Their all natural program provides customers
with the finest quality bison meat available. Plush green pasture
grass allows their animals to flourish as nature intended, without
stress and nutritional balance. They are proud to be ranchers that
have carried on the tradition of raising the American Bison. Their
products are served in many area restaurants and are also available
for purchase through their website.

We raise grass-fed and finished beef and lamb and pastured pork
and chicken. All our animals graze our wild meadows and have ac-
cess to clean water and plenty of open space. Our animals are never
given antibiotics and hormones. Pigs and chickens receive supple-
mental non-GMO grains. We sell bulk freezer meat at a price that
families can afford compared to supermarket store prices. We use a
small local butcher for harvesting animals and you can get it cut to
your specific request. We harvest cattle on-farm allowing the cattle
to stay calm (instead of being transported to town), thus creating a
better tasting, healthier meat. We harvest meat several times
throughout the year to keep your freezers full.

the art of roasting and brewing our own handcrafted beverages.
In any of our three locations (two in Ontario and one in Caldwell,
you will find exceptional coffee from our own in-house roasting as
well as hand-crafted drinks and, at our downtown Ontario loca-
tion, we have our own micro-brews on tap. We started our busi-
ness in 2001, in a cubbyhole behind our current downtown loca-
tion, as an extension to our bike store at that time. The bike busi-
ness was sold and the entire building, built in 1899 as one of On-
tario’s first banks, became devoted to embracing the culture of
coffee, beer, wine and food. In addition to our great coffee, beer
and hand-crafted drinks, we bake our own pastries in-house,
along with some other specialty delights. The afternoon and
evening crowds enjoy our fresh sandwiches, salads and appetiz-
ers. As the gateway to the Northwest coffee culture, it's our in-

of coffee in Oregon should be a memorable one to tell your fami-

The Four Rivers Community Garden is a place where we come
together to discover, learn and inspire our community in creating
an organic and resilient food system that also beautifies and en-
hances the land that has been given us to care for. The Four Riv-
ers Community Garden (FRCG) was established in 2008 by dedi-
cated community members working for garden education, to im-
prove the local food supply and to address hunger. Since 2008
the garden has taught many folks about gardening and annually
donates hundreds of pounds of produce to the Next Chapter
Food Pantry. Volunteers and donations are welcome.

A community garden project to help homeless, at risk and other peo-
ple in the community with a fresh start. The garden is a place where
we can educate folks about non-chemically enhanced gardening,
healthier lifestyles, environmental sound practices, development of
pollinator habitats, and to serve as supplemental food provision for
the needy as well as those who volunteer in the garden. Our location
is adjacent to a highly visible thoroughfare, in the most impoverished
area of our city, and we believe the more beautiful the garden the
more folks will want to participate.

Emergency Food Pantries are a place where individuals and fami-
lies in need (those who are at or below 185% of the Federal Pov-
erty Limit) can access 3 to 5 days of food supplies to supplement
other household resources. They are typically staffed by volun-
teers (often associated with one of the area's many faith -based
organizations); open multiple times during the month and, at
their best, work from a philosophy of "Manage the Product, Not
the People." Many Pantries throughout the region are "shopping
-style" programs that offer households the variety and selection
of what they can really use (and what family members will actu-
ally eat), while substantially reducing waste. Most Pantry sites
allow access up to 12 times per year (once a month). While each
of these organizations encourages open communitywide access,
Pantries should be contacted directly for questions regarding ID
requirements and service boundaries. (Note: Programs supplied
by Oregon Food Bank do not require Social Security information
as a pre-requisite for receiving food assistance.) For additional
information, please contact Oregon Food Bank- Southeast Ore-
gon Services at (541) 889-9206.
