ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my biology teacher, Madam Husrita
Binti Hussin as well as the whole biological unit of MRSM Transkrian for allowing me
to do this wonderful and meaningful biology project. Besides that, I would like to thank
Madam Husrita for guiding me to finish this project. I have realized that I won’t be able
to complete this project without the knowledge that she has taught and gave to me
throughout the classes and her YouTube videos.
Next, I would like to thank my parents for permitting me to use their laptops. They
know that it will be hard for me to do this project without their help. I also want to thank
them because they have been supporting me all along since I was little. The support
and valuable suggestions have been helpful in various phases of the completion of the
project.
Apart from that, I would like to express my gratitude to my classmates who have helped
me a lot by exchanging opinions and giving me some useful information. Lastly,
special thanks to people who have helped me a lot in finalizing this project within the
limited timeframe.
INTRODUCTION
Firstly, the main purpose of doing this project is to study the concept of water transport
in the xylem. I need to understand the concept since it is in the syllabus and related to
life. Moreover, this project is compulsory since the marks of the project will be added
to my final semester. Therefore, I need to finish the project completely and perfectly
to get the highest marks with a better understanding of the concept.
Next, the objective of doing this project is to get to produce multi-colored celery by
applying the concept of water transport in the xylem.
In a nutshell, I have to prepare a piece of celery with the leafy parts on the top and
some dark-colored food coloring. For instance, red, green and yellow color. I also need
to prepare a transparent cup or bottle that is big enough to stand the celery in, a spoon,
a small knife and water. After that, I have to fill about half of the water into the cup or
bottle. Next, add a few drops of food coloring to the water. Then, cut off the bottom of
the celery stalk. After that, put the celery in the colored water and repeat the same
steps using another color of food coloring. Finally, wait for one day to get the result.
In conclusion, the experiment is based on activity 4.2 in the textbook. When the food
colouring is dropped into the water, it will attached with the water molecules. Then, the
water will brought along the colors and moved up by capillary action through the stem.
Meanwhile, the xylem inside the celery would functioning by transporting the colored
water to all parts of the plant. Therefore, multi-colored celery is produced and we can
see how the water is transported in the xylem.

METHODOLOGY
PROCEDURES:
1. Prepare a piece of celery, some dark-coloured food colouring, a
transparent cup, a spoon, a small knife and water. Make sure the
celery has the leafy parts on its top.
2. Fill about half of the water into a transparent cup.
3. Add 5 drops of food colouring to the water.
4. Stir the coloured water well using a spoon .
5. Cut of the bottom edge of the celery stalk using a small knife so
that the celery can absorb water through the stem easily.
6. Put the celery stalk into the coloured water.
7. Repeat the same steps using other color of food coloring.
8. Observe and record the result after one day.
(refer attachment at page 11)
PRECAUTION:
1. Use the small knife
carefully while cutting
the bottom edge of the
celery stalk.
2. Do not play with the food
colouring because it will
stain on your hand.

RESULT AND INTERPRETATION OF
DATA
OBSERVATION:
The leaves and inside the stem has colored on it. As an example, when the celery is
soaked into red colored water, the leaves and also inside the stem had red colored
to it.

RESULT ANDDISINCTUESRSPIORNETATION OF
DATA
1. Why are celery used?
The small vessels in the celery stalks carry the water and color to the leaves,
like the way blood travels through our body.
2. State the vascular tissue involved in celery colouration.
The vascular tissue involved in celery colouration is xylem tissue.
3. These celery with a variety of colours wilt faster compared to
the original celery if they are left in a vase containing water.
Why?
In my opinion, it happened because the colored water has different concentration
compared to pure water. Therefore, the colored water
