ABOUT WORLD VISION
World Vision helps the most vulnerable children overcome poverty and injustice to
experience fullness of life.
We work to promote human transformation, seek justice for the
oppressed and demonstrate the love of God for all people.
We help children of all backgrounds, regardless of religion, race,
ethnicity or gender, even in the most dangerous places, inspired
by our Christian faith.
Today, World Vision is one of the largest humanitarian relief and
development organisations in the world, with a partnership of
offices in nearly 100 countries.
Our Journey So Far
1950s
World Vision was founded in 1950 by Rev.
Dr Bob Pierce, an American pastor and war
correspondent in response to the needs of
Korean War orphans. He had travelled to
China in 1947 and was deeply impacted by
the needs of one little girl. Before he left, he
took USD5 from his pocket and handed it
to the headmistress of a Chinese missionary
school, further pledging a monthly amount to
support that little girl’s growth and education.
This planted the seeds of World Vision’s child
sponsorship model.
World Vision developed its first Child
Sponsorship Programme in Korea in 1953.
4
1980s
During a devastating civil war, Ethiopia was hit with a famine and
a hunger crisis which was one of the worst humanitarian events
of the 20th century, with an estimated one million famine deaths,
and millions displaced from their homes. World Vision emergency
relief workers were among the first on the ground to assist the
starving children and families, providing help where it was most
critically needed.
1990s
World Vision would continue to make its presence known
globally, including providing aid and initiating peace-building
and reconciliation programmes in the aftermath of the brutal
1994 Rwandan Genocide.
In 1997, World Vision Malaysia was set up as a Support Office
within the partnership of World Vision International with a
primary focus on fundraising.
2010s - Today
Today, World Vision International coordinates a total of 34,300
staff members in nearly 100 countries. Together we’ve impacted
the lives of over 200 million vulnerable children by tackling the
root causes of poverty.
World Vision Malaysia’s work has grown to cover community
transformational development programmes, specific advocacy
initiatives and emergency responses. We piloted our first local
community development programmes in Mukim Tulid (2014)
and Mukim Tatalaan (2017), Sabah.
In 2022, World Vision Malaysia celebrates our 25th Anniversary.
It is a celebration of lives changed, and the people like you who
made change possible!
5
OUR WORK
At World Vision, our work is focused on one goal – “the sustained well-being of children
within families and communities, especially the most vulnerable.” World Vision views the
well-being of children in holistic terms and aspires for children to:
Enjoy Be educated Experience the Be cared for,
good health for life love of God and protected and
their neighbours participating
6
World Vision’s work has three main pillars:
Community Transformation
World Vision partners with local communities, governments
and other organisations to help children and families find life
in all its fullness through sustainable development. Through
Child Sponsorship, World Vision and its partners continue
to transform the lives of children, families and their
communities, helping them live with dignity and hope.
Our work in communities usually lasts 10-15 years, during
which we partner with local stakeholders to identify and
address the root issues perpetuating poverty. Once a
community achieves self-sustainability, World Vision phases
out of the community.
Emergency Relief
As an international relief organisation, World Vision
is globally positioned to respond to crises and
disaster-stricken areas speedily and effectively.
We provide basics such as food, water and shelter
for communities. We also assist in the recovery
and rebuilding process, with our primary focus
being the children affected.
Advocacy
At World Vision, we empower the voiceless with
a voice. When structural and systemic social
shortfalls deny people the right to speak up for
themselves, we lend them a voice by bringing
to light policies, practices and attitudes that
perpetuate inequality and deny social justice.
The 30-Hour Famine is an advocacy campaign
that brings to light the global issues children,
families and communities in need are facing.
7
THE 30-HOUR FAMINE
Every year, a global youth movement rises to take on hunger and poverty. Through the
30-Hour Famine, thousands of Malaysians give up solid food for 30 hours and raise funds for
children and families in need.

million additional people could be pushed
into extreme poverty due to climate change.
The future seems bleak, but it does not
have to be.
12
Why Climate Change?
Climate change is a global crisis we cannot ignore.
Climate change could push up to 132 million additional people
into extreme poverty by 2030. In essence, climate change is also
a humanitarian crisis that can result in an acceleration of the
hunger crisis.
13
What is
Climate Change?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities
have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning
of fossil fuels, which produces greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide,
methane and nitrous oxide.

Effects of
Climate Change
It may be tempting to think that climate change
mainly means warmer temperatures, but that is just
the tip of the iceberg. Climate change can lead to:
• Intense and recurring droughts
• Erratic rainfall patterns and severe storms
• Flooding
• Wildfires
• Rising sea levels and melting glaciers
16
Climate Change Hurts
As humans, we rely on the natural environment for life, food,
health and security. When climate change devastates the
environment, we suffer on every level. And no one pays a
higher price than those who’ve contributed the least to
this global crisis – the most vulnerable.
Climate change has not only put vulnerable children, families
and communities at greater risk of extreme weather events;
it has also brought about imperceptible changes that are
threatening their life – disrupted livelihoods, increased food
insecurity and hunger, and malnutrition.
17
How World Vision Helps
We are on the frontlines of tackling the impacts of climate change and work directly with
communities to identify context-specific solutions.

A Family’s 28-year-old Sampath and his wife Asela lives in
Struggle Welikanda, Sri Lanka. Their three-year-old son,
with Climate Heshan is underweight and severely malnourished.
Change
Sampath did not receive a formal education
and works as a daily wage labourer. When the
COVID-19 pandemic hit, work opportunities
reduced drastically and he struggled to provide for
his family.
In a community where farming is the main
industry, the prolonged drought due to climate
change continues to put Sampath out of work for
long periods at a time. This affects Heshan’s health,
as his parents cannot afford to feed him nutritious
food, and buy his milk powder and vitamins.
19
Asela tries her best to feed Heshan but with the
situation they face, it poses a great challenge. The
family has a small home garden where they can
sometimes get a meal or two out of it, but the water
shortage due to the drought limits their harvest.
Clean water is also a major issue for the family. As they
cannot afford to purchase clean water from the water
selling station, they have no choice but to drink from
the lake. Fetching water from the lake is also a perilous
2km journey by foot, especially during the night
when elephants roam free. However, out of necessity,
Sampath will take the risk and brave the journey.
Although Asela is aware that the unclean water from
the lake contains waterborne diseases and may
cause illnesses, she and Sampath will still use it. As
for young Heshan, his father will borrow money from
their neighbours to purchase some clean water but it
is often a temporary solution as they struggle to pay
their neighbours back.
20
Climate change has not only affected the family’s livelihood and food
security, but their safety too. The drought has drove wildlife like elephants
into their village, destroying homes and killing people, while snakes have
entered homes during the rainy season and floods.
Despite their struggles, Asela’s tenacity to continue providing for Heshan
is admirable. She seeks to be actively involved in World Vision’s work in
building their community and hopes to improve her parenting knowledge
so that she can support Heshan. Her only desire now is to see Heshan
become a healthy and well-nourished boy.
You can be part of the
long-term solution for
climate-vulnerable
communities and help
young parents like
Sampath and Asela raise
healthy children in the
midst of climate change.
21
Where the Funds Go
The funds raised through this year’s 30-Hour Famine will support World Vision’s community
development work in:
Lebanon Nepal Sri Lanka
Together, we will provide communities with Health & Nutrition, Water, Sanitation
& Hygiene (WASH) and Livelihoods assistance. This includes:
Providing PPE and disinfection kits to increase their
protection against COVID-19.
Developing inclusive and accessible nutrition awareness
to mothers and caregivers of children under five.
Providing sufficient nutrition assistance for malnourished
children.
Providing the basics of climate-smart agriculture
practices (CSAP) through training, seeds and plants. CSAP
will build awareness on and encourage farmers to adopt
climate-smart agricultural and innovative practices.
22
In Malaysia
The 30-Hour Famine 2022 will fund projects that are on the mission to protect and support
vulnerable children and families in Malaysia.
1 World Vision’s Malaysia Assistance Fund
supports health & nutrition, education, livelihood and child protection projects in
Mukim Tulid and Tatalaan, Sabah.
2 The Community Placement and Case Management (CPCM) Programme
by SUKA Society
provides safety, permanency and well-being for vulnerable children who do
not have any parental care and are at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
3 Project H.E.A.L (Healthy Eating and Living) by Fugee School
offers Fugee students an understanding of how best to have a healthy lifestyle that
includes the right diet and activities such as outdoor sports, gardening, cooking
classes and “Farm-to-Table” visits.

Pakho Chau
Since his debut 15 years ago, popular Hong Kong singer-
songwriter, lyricist, actor and clothing brand owner
Pakho Chau has clinched numerous music awards. The
accomplished singer is also an outstanding actor who has
received acting awards for his work.
A multitalented star who works hard at his career, Pakho

awareness of the growing hunger crisis and invite
everyone to join hands to help the most vulnerable
children and families.
He said: “In recent years, we have seen the impacts of
climate change through severe droughts, floods and
other extreme weather events around the world. All of these
have affected the global food supply and agricultural systems,
leaving vulnerable communities without sufficient food. It
is imperative that we not only fight the pandemic together,
but also overcome the challenges brought about by climate
change. As long as we are united and act with love, we can
definitely change the future for the better!”
Pakho believes that a beautiful world starts with you and me,
especially the youth, who has the potential and power to change
