INTERNSHIP

MALEKY INTERGENERATIONAL CENTER

Designed in collaboration with Kaitlyn Halula and Nada Alabdulwahab

OBJECTIVE: Design a facility consisting of an elderly assisted living

center for 12 residents and daycare for 15 young children. This facility
should follow ADA guidelines and provide interaction opportunities among
generations.

SOLUTION: Research informed our design decisions by ntegrating design

theories such as Eden Alternative, Greenhouse design, and psycological
design.Inspired from the Morrocan culture, an Arabic speaking country,
Maleky means, “royalty.” The desire was for all occupants enjoying this
intergeneration center to feel important, honored, and royal as they use
the spaces. Not only is this a focus for the elderly generation spending
their last years here, but also for the children growing up here, and the
staff who support their family from this center.

SOFTWARE USED: AutoCAD, SketchUp

INSPIRATION

CONCEPT COLOR PALETTE

The beautiful intricate patterns found in tapestry, hand
carved wood, and tile was the primary inspiration.
Patterns helped create the overall shape of the facility,
repetitively organize the space, and select materials
and finishes. The pointed arch is a main shape
featured throughout the facility.

OBJECTIVE: Design Alexander McQueen flagship boutique and lounge in an existing three

story building in New York, NY.

SOLUTION: Inspired by Alexander McQueen’s performances, the concept of ‘Calm in the

Chaos’ determined every design decision. The space encompasses various walking levels
among the three floors of the building, as well as many route options to travel throughout
the space. Visitors wander throughout the building, choosing their path of travel, turning
corners that have unseen destinations. These paths lead to discoveries of incredible McQueen
garments and accessories, as well as areas for sitting and conversing. This is the calm in the
chaos. Unknowingly, travelling the space can seem chaotic, but the moment a prized McQueen
gown or an intimate space to catch up with a friend is discovered, all emotions are calmed.

SOFTWARE USED: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop,

3D physical modeling

11

12

CALM IN THE CHAOS

Each performance authored, designed, and directed by Alexander McQueen communicates a predominant message.
The content of his performances alludes to a much deeper insight than simply viewing the beautiful, intricate garments he
creates. McQueen uses each garment, model, and stage presentation holistically as an opportunity to advocate an idea to
his audience in hopes of creating emotional responses within them. The garments and composition of the performance speak
the message for him.
McQueen battles the standards, perspectives, traditions, and other patterns of his audience’s life to effectively portray
his deeper message. The lenses that the audience views McQueen’s performances through will subconsciously alter their
emotional response to his message. Therefore, each individual in the audience has a chaotic, messy, disorderly composition
of ideas that exists due to the standards, perspectives, traditions, and patterns of the culture they know. Amongst the
varying compositions of each viewer, McQueen thrives in relentlessly advocating a clear, detailed, intentional message to his
audience; a message that initiates a long lasting emotional response.
This is the calm in the chaos.

OBJECTIVE: Using an exitsing facility, create a Pediatric Center including six exam rooms, two doctors

offices, a nurse station, waiting room, reception area, and employee lounge and workroom. This
facility should be ADA compliant, furnished with healthcare and commercial grade furniture, finishes,
and equipment

SOLUTION: E D G E Family Health Center is focused on the patient’s experience; ensuring a soothing,

yet reviving response. The repeating angles found in the architecture and finish details signify action;
moving in the direction of healing. The space is infused with calm complementary colors, low profile
commercial grade furniture, soft light, and continuous patterns. Each exam room is named after an
animal that is characterized by courage, strength, willpower, or healing, and displayed at the entrance
of the room and as an accent wall covering in the room. Finished materials support the function of the
space and the design concept; allowing for maximum quality performance by E D G E Staff.

SOFTWARE USED: Revit, Photoshop

NURSE’S STATION AND CORRIDOR

Nurse’s station is central to the six exam rooms for easy access. Angled flooring
and linear recessed luminaires act as additional wayfinding strategies. Each
room is labeled with a graphic representation of the animal and the title.

OBJECTIVE: Explore lighing concepts learned to properly and attractively illuminate a

coffee shop.

SOLUTION:The luminaires chosen for illuminating the seating areas are both functional

and visually appealing, enhancing the concept of kaffetime. For illuminating the coffee
bar preparation area, pendants with 70 watts provide plenty of light to complete tasks.
A directional spot light with a 40 degree flood is in a fixed position illuminating the menu
board.
To address the 14’ exposed ceilings in this space, curved wood panels are suspended
at three different heights from the ceiling, located above the coffee bar preparation
area. Visually, this grounds the space, leading the customer’s eye to where they need to
go. These curved wood panels, inspired from Scandinavian design, also hide the pendants
above the coffee preparation area.

SOFTWARE USED: AutoCAD, SketchUp

35

36

kaffetime is a Scandinavian
and nature inspired coffee
shop, named after the phrase
kaffeetime, meaning “coffee
hour” in the Norwegian
language. Nature-made,
texturized materials and finishes
meet the smooth, tapered, thin
wood elements of Scandinavian
design. The contrast of textures
and color infuse remarkably,
creating an environment that is
fresh, natural, and simple.

RESTORE REMODEL

The original ‘Habitat green’ ReStore check out counter was
lacking organization, was not appealing to customers, and
did not reflect the mission of Habitat for Humanity and the
purpose of the ReStore. As a response, I proposed a remodel
for this area that uses repurposed materials and has forms
characteristic of a home, supporting the goal of the ministry.
