JIM THORPE - 1912
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
James Francis "Jim" Thorpe,
was an athlete of Native
American and European
ancestry. Considered one of
the most versatile athletes of
modern sports, he won
Olympic gold medals for the
1912 pentathlon and
decathlon, played Collegiate
and Professional football, and
also played professional
baseball and basketball. He
lost his Olympic titles after it
was found he was paid for
playing two seasons of semi-
professional baseball before
competing in the Olympics,
thus violating the amateurism
rules that were then in place.
In 1983, 30 years after his
death, the International
Olympic Committee restored
his Olympic medals.

GONZAGA PREP DEFEATS SKYLINE, TO WIN FIRST TITLE SINCE 1986
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Gonzaga Prep rode a hot start by its offense and the defense did the rest, as the Bullpups handled the
Skyline Spartans 34-16 in the State 4A championship game at the Tacoma Dome. G-Prep racked up a record-breaking 521
rushing yards on 83 carries as the Bullpups ran all over Skyline. Gonzaga Prep (14-0) won its first title since 1986 and third
overall. The Bullpups also set title-game records for total yards (564) and first downs (29). Senior Evan Weaver led the rushing
attack for the Spokane school with 133 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Senior quarterback Liam Bell added 115
yards on 18 rushes. Sophomore receiver Devin Culp had touchdown runs of 16 and 59 yards on reverse pitch plays to help
give Gonzaga Prep a 24-3 halftime lead. He also had a 43-yard reception to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Weaver late in
the first half.
Gonzaga Prep had chances to score even more in the first half but twice came up empty inside the Skyline 12. The Bullpups
had 358 total yards, including 315 rushing, in the opening half while Skyline had 102, with just 9 on the ground. Skyline's Blake
Gregory completed 26 of 38 for 316 yards, two touchdowns with two interceptions. Skyline (12-2) had hoped to win its eighth
title and first since 2012. Gonzaga Prep held the Sammamish school from east of Seattle to 22 rushing yards on 18 attempts.
The Spartans lost two fumbles.
Skyline (12-2) came into the game owning playoff knock outs of three undefeated-at-the-time teams – Gig Harbor, top-ranked
Camas and Lake Stevens last week. “We wanted to hit them in the mouth early and we did,” G-Prep coach Dave McKenna
said. “They’re a good football team and they beat some great opponents, obviously, but we were just a lot better tonight.”
Evan Weaver, G-Prep’s 6-3, 245-pound star who has wreaked havoc at defensive end and running back all season. “We’ve
been underrated all year,” Weaver said. “We proved that an East Side team was here to play. It just shows how good we are.”
Weaver got double- and sometimes triple-teamed on defense. That opened the door for middle linebacker Conor McKenna,
who had a team-high 11 tackles. “We came out strong and punched them in the mouth,” McKenna said. “I don’t think they
were ready for us. We played a great game offensively and defensively. It’s one of the more complete games we’ve played all
year. The offense was amazing. We had complete and total trust in them.”

Skyline defeats Lake Stevens 37-34 in 4A Semi’s
It was a quarterback duel between two of the best in the region. One, Lake Stevens quarterback Jacob Eason, led the charge
for the Vikings, finishing 32-for-42 for 390 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The other, Skyline’s Blake Gregory,
completed 22-for-28 with 436 yards and three touchdowns. In the end, Gregory and his Spartans edged Lake Stevens 37-34 in
a 4A state semifinal at the Tacoma Dome. “Blake was unbelievable,” said Skyline head coach Mat Taylor. “He gets better every
week.”
Both quarterbacks led their respective squads as they dueled to the end. The game featured eight lead changes with the
teams alternating scores throughout the second half. “Their quarterback had a great game,” said Lake Stevens head coach Tom
Tri. “The bottom line is they had too much time to throw the ball. We needed to do a little bit better job of pressuring their
quarterback, especially in the first half. We did a better job in the second half making some adjustments but ultimately they just
made more plays than we did”
Lake Stevens got up quick in the first quarter with Eason’s 15-yard pass to tight end Riley Krenz. Skyline answered with an 81
-yard touchdown pass from Blake Gregory to Danny Sinatro. Eason’s second touchdown was a 3-yard pass to wide receiver
Hunter Eckstrom in the second quarter. Ian Schneider, Andrew Grimes and Asi Tupua also scored rushing touchdowns for the
Vikings. Grimes had 161 yards rushing on 24 carries, and Krenz has 12 receptions for 173 yards.
Eason and Lake Stevens was arguably the toughest competition through the air that Skyline has faced this season, and the
squad said it was difficult to defend against. When I thought I was on my guy, like bread and butter, [Eason] would just fit the
ball in there,” said Skyline defensive back Danny Sinatro. “You really got to be ready every single play against him. He’s such a
hell of an athlete. He’s just an athlete, and he was testing us, and I’m glad we came through.” Sinatro led the Spartans with 10
tackles, including one for loss.
The final touchdown that counted was a 27-yard pass from Gregory to Bradley Kim with less than seven minutes left in the
game. Gregory found Kim twice for receptions – both going for Skyline touchdowns. Kim finished with 47 yards receiving.
Rashaad Boddie had six receptions for 79 yards and Danny Sinatro had three catches for 97 yards and a touchdown.
On Lake Stevens’ final drive of the game, the Vikings were down by three and took over on the Skyline 48. Eason threw deep
to Krenz three times, and each pass was batted away in the end zone. With three seconds left in the game, Eason threw to
Krenz a fourth time, but this pass was intercepted by Sinatro. “I wanted the ball in our hands, whether we had the lead or were
close, because I thought we were going to go down to score and win the game,” said Lake Stevens head coach Tom Tri. “That's
the kind of crew we have. We put ourselves in that position, we just couldn't quite finish the job.”
Now Skyline will play in the state championship game for the first time since the Spartans won the title in 2012. After getting
knocked out of regional playoffs last year, playing in the Tacoma Dome is a new experience for many of the Spartans. “I know
we have one more and then I can be a state champion, but we’ve gotten this far, and really it’s a dream come true,” Sinatro
said.

Grade: Senior
Height: 6-foot-6 Weight: 220 pounds
Athletic achievement: He completed 235-of-338
passes for 3,585 yards and 43 touchdowns against
just six interceptions this past season, leading the
Vikings (12-1) to the Class 4A semifinals. A national
Elite 11 quarterback camp invitee and ranked as the
nation’s No. 16 recruit in the ESPN 300, Eason has
been selected to play in the 2016 U.S. Army All-
American Bowl.
Academic excellence: Eason has maintained a 3.83
GPA.
Exemplary character: A devoted member of his
church community, he has volunteered locally on
behalf of NEGU (Never Ever Give Up) in association
with the Jesse Rees Foundation to fight childhood
cancer and as a youth football coach.
THE PRAISE
“Eason has the fastest release I have ever seen,”
said Kai Smalley, head coach at Snohomish High. “It
is actually very deceiving if you aren’t watching him
for a long time. He makes such quick and correct
reads, then has the ability to get rid of the ball with
great mechanics. For being as long as he is, you
would think he would have a long release but it hap-
pens so quickly, it’s nearly impossible for a high
school defensive back to get a break on the ball.”
THE FUTURE: Eason is graduating early and enrol-
ling at the University of Georgia.

Eastside Catholic stuns Bellevue, rallies from 28
point deficit to win 3A Championship 48-42 in OT
Senior Brandon Wellington scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in overtime as Eastside Catholic rallied from a 28-point, second-
half deficit to beat Bellevue 48-42 in the Class 3A high school championship football game on Friday night at the Tacoma
Dome.
Eastside Catholic (13-0) beat Bellevue for the second straight year in the fourth consecutive title-game showdown between
the two schools.
Bellevue (12-2) had the ball first in overtime and missed a 39-yard field goal attempt. Eastside Catholic took its possession at
the Bellevue 25 and senior Harley Kirsch threw two passes to Wellington for 24 yards to set up the winning touchdown. Kirsch
completed 21 of 32 for 249 yards and three touchdowns.
Wellington forced the overtime when he ran 11 yards to tie it at 42 with 1:24 left in the fourth quarter. Eastside Catholic
trailed 42-14 midway through the third quarter. The Crusaders recovered a Bellevue fumble at the Wolverines 46 to set up the
tying score.
Kirsch threw three consecutive touchdown passes, including two to Hunter Bryant, to rally the Sammamish school from east
of Seattle. Kirsch's 4-yard toss to Matt Laris cut the lead to 42-35 with 5:59 remaining in the fourth quarter after the Crusaders
had stopped Bellevue on a fourth-and-3 play at the Eastside Catholic 49.
Ercle Terrell led Bellevue with 227 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries. He ran for 129 yards and four touchdowns on 13
carries to help Bellevue to a 35-14 halftime lead. Benaiah Ellington intercepted two passes in Eastside Catholic territory to set
up two of the scores. A high snap to the punter recovered by Bellevue set up a 1-yard touchdown by Terrell.
Eastside Catholic won its second state title while Bellevue had hoped to win its 13th. The Crusaders beat Bellevue 35-13 last
year to end the Wolverines' streak of 67 consecutive wins and six straight championships.
Wellington returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown for Eastside Catholic late in the second quarter. Wellington, a Univer-
sity of Washington commit, scored three touchdowns in last year's title game
