Crossing CLAIRE HINES
The

Pond

Introduction

Hello, my name is Claire and I am a senior in
college at James Madison University. Coming to
JMU from Massachusetts, I have been able to
explore an entirely new part of the country, and

made some new friends along the way. I also
had the opportunity to study abroad in London
with the SMAD program. Both of these places
have become my home away from home. This
book is compiled of original images from my

travel experiences.

James Madison x
British Palace

This Composite is a combination of a pho-
to I took at Blenheim Palace in England,
with an image of the James Madison statue
layered over it. I decided to pair these two
images because they both embody a regal
and historical presence. I love the way the
sunlight of the statue photo illuminates the
gloomy weather of England. I decided to
add a London post stamp to this image, to
create a postcard aesthetic. The grain as-
pect ages this photo nicely and enhances

the feeling of elegance.

London Skyline x
Newman Lake

This composite features an original photo I took of
the London skyline from the view of St. Paul’s

Cathedral. This is one of my favorite photos tha-
tI’ve ever taken because of the city scape com-
bined with a breath-taking sunset. I layered a
photo of Newman Lake over this image that I took
when I lived on campus Sophomore year. At the
time, the view of the lake surrounded by trees was
one of my favorite views on campus. I decided to
combine these two images because of the senti-
mental value they hold for me, as well as the fact
that the greenery of the lake contrasts the sleek-

ness of the city.

Vinyl x Wilson Hall

The background of this display is a photo that I
took freshman year when walking on the quad.
You can see Wilson Hall and the beautiful blue-
stone buildings in the background. I then layered a
photo I took of a Pink Floyd album that I bought at
a record shop in London. I love this composite be-
cause I think the combination of these two imag-
es is flawless. It looks as though I took the photo
of the album while standing on the quad, when in
reality, I took it in the middle of a busy city street.
This image means a lot to me because I found this
original Pink Floyd vinyl on my 21st birthday at a
random store in Notting Hill. It felt as though I was
meant to find this record, just as how I was meant

to come to JMU.

Notting Hill x
Valley

The foreground of this image is a photo that I took of
the Snenandoah Valley while on a drive with friends.
The view was breath-taking, so i decided to layer it over
a photo of colorful Notting Hill in London. There is a
clear contrast here between nature and city-life, with a

cohesive color story of blues and greens.

Church Ceiling

x Hburg

This is one of my favorite
composites because of
the justaposition. I took a
photo of a cathedral ceil-
ing in London and lay-
ered it under a photo I
took of vme standing in
downtown Harrisonburg.
The cathedral is so pres-
tigeous and regal, while
the vans and manhole
cover are very street. The
red x’s add a pop of color
and also represent British
culture. Typically, finish-
ing a letter, email, text,
etc with “x” is a general
way of saying “thank you,”
“cheers,” “love you” and
much more!
