Comic Book Legend Stan Lee Dies at 95
STAN LEE — who incorporated themes from his Jewish childhood
into his work creating numerous comic book superheroes — died
Nov. 12 in Los Angeles, according to JTA. He was 95.
Born Stanley Martin Lieber as the son of a Romanian-Jewish
immigrant father, Lee was a comic book pioneer, creating such
legendary characters as Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and the
X-Men. He was named publisher of Marvel in 1972 and grew the
brand into a multimedia giant.
Lee addressed anti-Semitism the introduction to the book
Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics and the Creation of the
Superhero, by Danny Fingeroth, questioning its role in experiences
in his art and that of other comic book writers.
“Could it be that there was something in our background, in
our culture, that brought us together in the comic book field?” he
wrote. “When we created stories about idealized superheroes, were
we subconsciously trying to identify with characters who were the
opposite of the Jewish stereotypes that hate propaganda had tried to
instill in people’s minds?”
Resolution Condemning Pittsburgh Attacks
Approved Unanimously
THE U.S. HOUSE of Representatives on Nov. 14 unanimously
approved a resolution that condemned the Oct. 27 Tree of Life syna-
gogue shootings that left 11 worshippers dead, JTA reported.
The resolution honors “the memory of the victims of the attack,
and offering condolences to and expressing support for their fami-
lies, friends, and community.”
Rep. Mike Doyle, who represents the Squirrel Hill neighborhood
where the synagogue complex is located, introduced the bipartisan
resolution last week. l

Lion will replace outgoing Mayor Nir Barkat.
Neither candidate had clinched the minimum 40 percent of vote
during the four-candidate round of voting on Oct. 30.
Lion had been endorsed by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman
and ultra-Orthodox parties Shas and United Torah Judaism, while
Jerusalem’s secular voters supported Berkovitch, who campaigned for a

“Tonight, Jerusalem chose what unites us, what unifies us and brings

of Jerusalem, those who voted for me and those who didn’t,” Lion said.

Liberman is the head of the Yisrael Beiteinu Party and his resigna-

Benjamin Netanyahu holding a narrow margin of 61 Knesset seats out

Jewish Train Travel in Europe
TRAINS ARE A convenient vehicle to use to travel for any reason in Europe, and they serve
many of the cities and other sites in Europe that are home to significant events in European
Jewish history, both positive and negative.
Even though anti-Semitism is on the rise in Europe as it is in the United States, it should
not deter Jews from traveling by train there.
While anti-Semitism is always reprehensible and a possibility anywhere, today’s Europe
is not the Europe of the 1930s. The incidents of anti-Semitism fortunately are so far isolated
and not rail-oriented. Your statistical chances of being caught in an anti-Semitic incident,
particularly a violent one, are still quite remote.
What’s more, official government policies and laws, especially in France and Germany,
are strongly opposed to repeating the unfortunate history of Nazi-dominated Europe. For
example, Deutsche Bahn, the German national railroad, is even planning to name one of its
new high-speed trains after Anne Frank.
Since European trains are amenable to passengers bringing food and drink on board, it
is possible to observe Jewish dietary laws while on the rails. Most big cities and quite a few
smaller ones have emporia that sell kosher food that you can buy and consume on board.
Some trains, like the Eurostar, even serve kosher meals if they are requested a couple of
weeks in advance.
If you are Jewish and are planning a European train trip to see Jewish historical sites
and/or trace your ancestors, some recommended reading includes A Travel Guide to Jewish
Europe, fourth edition, by Ben G. Frank (Penguin, 2018) and Jewish Heritage Travel: A
Guide To Eastern Europe by Ruth Ellen Gruber (National Geographic Books, 2007).

ON NOV. 15, more than 500 people braved an unexpected snow storm and
headed to the Kimmel Center for the Jewish Federation’s Main Event. The eve-
ning was a celebration to cap off a year of Israel70 programs and events and
served as an opportunity for past Israel mission participants to reconnect and
reminiscence. Avi Issacharoff, producer and co-creator of the Netflix hit Fauda,
entertained the crowd along with musicians from the group ARTolerance. Thanks
to ticket sales and the generous support of our 110 sponsors, the Jewish Federation
raised more than $930,000.
