— WHAT IT MEANS TO BE JEWISH IN PHILADELPHIA —
Bringing Brightness and Hope to Those in Need
For 119 years the Jewish Federation has provided an infrastructure of support for
Jewish people and organizations. We are made for this moment, and will continue
to lead the way as the central resource for our Jewish community.
A Message from Gail Norry and David Adelman,
Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia Board Co-Chairs
As we reflect on the Jewish Federation’s proud legacy and traditions, we are honored to continue
this sacred work as the new Board Co-Chairs. For 119 years, the Jewish Federation has provided an
infrastructure of support for the Jewish community in Philadelphia, in Israel and around the world.
Together, we have served the most vulnerable, inspired community engagement and supported Jewish
life and learning in countless ways.
A heartfelt thanks to Susanna Lachs Adler, Bud Newman and the exceptional Board Chairs before us
who helped build a strong philanthropic community. We are at a transformational moment for the
Jewish Federation, and wanted to share a few updates:
While this year has brought unforeseen challenges for us all, it proved what we have always known to be true:
our Jewish community is strong and resilient. Each year, the Jewish Federation grants out millions of dollars.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we mobilized to raise and leverage $2.1 million. We are made for this
moment, and will continue to lead the way as the central resource for our Jewish community. Our COVID-19
relief efforts provided for basic needs like food and health, PPE, and funding for our camp and educational
partners. As we prepare for what’s next, we will maintain our critical role as community convener and
anticipate where our collective dollars can do the most good for the most people.
The 2021 Fiscal Year marks the start of a new three-year grant cycle for our Jewish Community
Fund. Last year, the Jewish Federation commissioned the first comprehensive study of our Jewish
community in ten years: the 2019 Community Portrait Jewish Population Study. The Population
Study results will be a useful tool for informing our decision-making and assisting grantees in
understanding the unmet needs within the community. The grant applications will open in early
September. Please visit jewishphilly.org/grants for more information.
Finally, we hope you will join us at our virtual Main Event on September 16th, co-chaired by Susan
& Jeff Schwartz and Lisa & Brett Studner, and an incredible group of host committee members and
sponsors. This exciting event will kick off our 2021 Annual Campaign, which we have recently aligned
with our fiscal year. As of September 1st we are beginning our 2021 campaign year with Sherrie Savett
as Campaign Chair (and a former Board Chair herself). The Main Event is our biggest event of the year.
This year, we are connecting with our national network of Federations to hear from the Levy
family, stars of the hit show Schitt’s Creek. We hope you will join us for this complimentary event, and
encourage your friends and family to register at jewishphilly.org/mainevent.
While so much is different than it used to be and so many things are on pause, know that the Jewish
Federation has not slowed down. We recognize we are needed now more than ever, and we remain
grateful to our incredible community. We come together to make the greatest possible difference during
times of need, and ensure Jewish continuity and vibrancy on a global scale.
We wish you all the best and hope to “see” you at the Main Event!
