Report: Three of Every Four Male Israeli Haredi
College Students Drop Out
Just 24 of every 100 male students who start at haredi colleges
in Israel graduate, according to a state comptroller report
examining 2011-’18, The Times of Israel reported.

The dropout rate for women is about 50 percent.
Starting in 2011, the Israeli government invested about $153
million and earmarked twice that amount more through 2022 to
develop academic programs for the Orthodox. The idea was to
help integrate the haredi into the workforce.
There were about 6,000 haredi college students in Israel prior
to the initiative, but there were 11,465 students by the 2016-’17
academic year.
The comptroller said the high dropouts rates can be attributed,
in part, to educational gaps among haredi men, who don’t learn
English or math after middle school; difficulties in adjusting to
academic demands, including testing; and the fact that many
haredi students are married with children when they enroll. l

So let’s put the blame where it really belongs, on parents who don’t push
Jewish studies on their children nor spend time at home discussing the serious
rise of this evil.

Lack of Holocaust education in public schools is the direct result of the
Pennsylvania Senate, which didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to mandate
the Holocaust be taught in public schools as some states have done, including
New Jersey. The mandate bill didn’t pass but a compromise allowing it to be
taught did with no funds for materials or extra education allocated. Parents
elected these people, so again, to assign blame, maybe parents should look in
the mirror.

Jewish Philly Podcast Episode 14: Holocaust
Survivor Ann Jaffe

THE MOST RECENT episode of the Jewish Philly podcast featured a special
interview this episode with local Holocaust survivor Ann Jaffe.

Joined by our guest co-host Marc Prine, we sat down with Jaffe to hear her
story of when the Nazis invaded her small hometown in Poland, her family’s
remarkable escape and survival in a nearby forest, and why it’s so important
for her to share her story with local students.

Also on this episode, we broke down the history of Jewish and interfaith
activism, followed by a conversation on Israel’s recent elections with Jewish
Exponent reporter Jesse Bernstein. Finally, we shared the remarkable story
of the Theresienstadt Tree, otherwise known as the tree that survived the
Holocaust.

The Jewish Philly podcast is available on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play
and at Jewishphilly.org/podcast.
