A STATEMENT OF RECORD
FEDERATION HOUSING, INC.

The Federation Housing community records with sorrow the passing of their esteemed colleague and friend.

Ephraim F. Goldstein

Mr. Goldstein’s commitment to creating affordable housing benefited thousands of seniors served by Federation Housing
and his life work serves as an example of kindness and compassion to the entire community.

Mr. Goldstein founded Federation Housing, Inc. in 1970 with the support and encouragement of the Jewish Federation
of Greater Philadelphia. Along with his wife Claire, of blessed memory, he was a long-time advocate and supporter of
affordable housing for seniors. His unyielding commitment helped to create needed homes for seniors throughout the
Greater Northeast Philadelphia area. Mr. Goldstein believed in his ability to make an impact and frequently testified in
Congressional hearings about the financial burdens facing older adults specifically as it related to housing costs and
related living expenses. He was unyielding in his efforts to break down barriers and stereotypes often affiliated with the
poor and provided hope to those less fortunate across the region.

Mr. Goldstein served as Federation Housing’s Executive Vice President from the agency’s birth in May of 1970 until his
retirement in September 1994. Eph, along with a unique and talented team of real estate developers, bankers and phil-
anthropic families worked tirelessly in pursuit of creating new affordable housing opportunities throughout those years.
Today, Federation Housing proudly serves nearly 1,500 seniors in eleven beautifully appointed properties each with a
blend of supportive services to ensure one’s quality of life.

His dedication and commitment to the needy reflects a life filled with compassion and endless giving to improve the lives
of others. Federation Housing, Inc. and our entire community were truly fortunate to have been the beneficiary of Eph’s
leadership and enduring tzedakah.

To all those touched by Ephraim; and to all who mourn his passing, the Federation Housing Community offer this expres-
sion of profound sympathy. May they find solace in the knowledge that his dedication, generosity and good works will
serve as a living tribute to him and will benefit future generations for years to come.

Horsing Around
With Horseradish

FOOD
KERI WHITE | JE FOOD COLUMNIST

DID ANYONE ELSE overstock horseradish for Passover?
I was looking at two jars of it for more than a month and
was determined to use them e ectively and deliciously.

is is not a chore — I love horseradish. But it is a rather
distinct taste and not one that you are likely to use in mul-
tiple dishes at the same meal the way you might onions,
garlic, chilies, parsley, salt or pepper. So I spread it out over
several meals, and pretty soon I was not only out of it, but
needed to buy more.

First, some background: Horseradish is thought to be
indigenous to Eastern Europe, which explains why it is a
common ingredient in many Jewish dishes. Considered
medicinal in the Middle Ages, today’s herbalists contin-
ue to recommend it for urinary tract infections, kidney
stones, sinus conditions, uid retention, coughs, bron-
chitis, joint pain, gallbladder illness, sciatica, gout, colic
and intestinal worms. Some practitioners even suggest
applying horseradish directly to the skin to ease painful
joints and muscles.

e word “horseradish” dates to the late 1500s in
England; “horse” was used guratively to convey strength,
and “radish” was used because its texture and taste were
reminiscent of radishes.

Horseradish is a great way to add some zing and zest to
dishes for people who dislike the spiciness of chilies but
still seek robust avors.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia
mobilizes financial and volunteer resources to
address the communities’ most critical priorities
locally, in Israel and around the world.

Pomegranate-level Donors
Enjoy Fashionable Evening

The Jewish Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Pomegranate-level donors descended on Boyds
Philadelphia department store on April 26 for an evening of fashion and fundraising. The
event featured Liraz Cohen Mordechai, the founder of Fashionating, who presented an exciting
multimedia presentation on the glamorous world of Israeli fashion. The event also included
an exclusive Maskit Israeli trunk show. Pomegranate donors, who contribute a minimum of
$1,800 annually to the Jewish Community Fund, enjoyed learning about how Israeli identity
has influenced Israeli fashion and hearing about how the dollars raised by the Jewish Federa-
tion can help influence Jewish identity for a lifetime.

PA’s annual mission to Harrisburg. The focus was on strengthening the Education Investment Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship programs, as well as pushing
for additional security and health funding for nonpublic schools. Participating schools included Abrams Hebrew Academy, Caskey Torah Academy, Jack M. Barrack
Hebrew Academy, Kohelet Yeshiva, Kosloff Torah Academy, Mesivta High School, Perelman Jewish Day School, Politz Hebrew Academy and Talmudical Yeshiva of
Philadelphia.
