Ginger-rific Flavors for Fall

FOOD

KERI WHITE | JE FOOD COLUMNIST

I’VE BEEN PLAYING AROUND a lot with ginger these days.
This spicy root gives an energetic kick to food and has many
health-giving properties besides.

But first, some basic facts. Although it is normally referred to as a
root, the portion of the plant we eat is actually the stem or rhizome.
Originally cultivated in Southern Asia, ginger is a key ingredient
in Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Malaysian and other Asian cuisines.
Over time, the plant spread west, moving into Africa and the Carib-
bean, where ginger remains a popular flavor in a variety of foods, as
well as an herbal remedy for numerous ailments.

Ginger is purported to boost bone health, strengthen the
immune system, reduce arthritis, calm the digestive system,
reduce menstrual disorders, and help with cold and flu symptoms.

Be that as it may, ginger also happens to be delicious, and I’ve
been enjoying it with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Here
are a few tasty preparations to integrate this flavorful rhizome into
your diet.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia
mobilizes financial and volunteer resources to
address the communities’ most critical priorities
locally, in Israel and around the world.

Main Event 2017

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Main Event is
always a large and spirited celebration, and this year was no
exception. Nearly 1,000 people filled the Kimmel Center on
Wednesday, November 15th to help us celebrate and honor the
leadership of our Immediate Past President Bud Newman. The
event decor was an homage to Newman’s farm in New Hope,
complete with hay bales, pickled vegetables and even a very
friendly goat named Gizmo. Following an emotional tribute to
Newman from current Board Chair Susanna Lachs Adler and
Jewish Federation President and CEO Naomi Adler, our guest
entertainer, Jill Kargman, executive producer and star of Bravo’s
Odd Mom Out, had the audience in stitches. This record-break-
ing event was a wonderful tribute to Newman and to the com-
mitment of our greater Philadelphia Jewish communities.

Bud Newman gives his salutatory speech to the event’s attendees.
