SALT RIVER MATERIALS GROUP WAREHOUSE

L O C AT I O N Arrington Watkins Architects provided design services for a new PEMB warehouse for
Phoenix, Arizona the Salt River Materials Group (SRMG). The warehouse includes a shop/sotrage area
OWNER that will be used mainly to store light and heavy equipment needed in the facility. The
Salt River Materials Group SRMG Lower Buckeye facility provides with the sales of sand and gravel materials for

PALO VERDE EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT STORAGE FACILITY

L O C AT I O N Arrington Watkins Architects provided design services for an equipment/vehicle
Tonopah, Arizona storage facility with drive-thru bays on a secured facility for Arizona Public Service
OWNER (APS) Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. AW was hired to analyze and design the
Arizona Public Service storage, placement, and response for Fire personnel in Beyond-Design-Basis External
COMPLETION DATE Events (BDBEE). The BDBEE included extreme wind, seismic, flooding, and temperature
2015 events. The result is a set of 4 buildings. Building A stores communications equipment,
PROJECT SIZE small parts and has office and conference space. Buildings B and C store large trailer

Design/Bid/Build One of the most complicated processes was designing anchors and coordinating
placement in the floor for each piece of equipment. 670 anchor points are installed to
provide seismic restraint. The EESF site is independently secured within the Generating
Station’s secured perimeter. The site specific strategy requires a set of FLEX equipment
is assigned to each Reactor Unit. There are three sets of equipment and one set of spare
equipment to be stored (N+1). Equipment will be stored in a “ready to use” condition.
Batteries will be charged, fuel filled, and equipment maintained.

WAREHOUSE – PROPERTY EVIDENCE

CITY OF BUCKEYE POLICE PROPERTY STORAGE

L O C AT I O N Arrington Watkins provided full design services for a 13,920 SF police evidence storage

ARIZONA COMMUNITY ECOCENTER

L O C AT I O N The Arizona Community Ecocenter is a state-of-the-art recycling facility for Waste
Surprise, Arizona Management of Arizona, Inc. The building was designed to accommodate the recycling
OWNER system, which reaches over 40 feet at its highest point, allowing the system to use
Waste Management gravity to sort materials based on density/shape. More importantly, it allows for the
COMPLETION DATE use of multiple vertically stacked conveyors that “catch” materials as they are sorted

markets.
The facility is situated on 14.8 acres of land adjacent to Waste Management’s Northwest
Regional Landfi ll, and serves the greater Phoenix and Northern Arizona areas. Certified
LEED-NC 2.2 Silver.

SPOKANE MATERIALS AND RECYCLING CENTER

L O C AT I O N Arrington Watkins teamed with Gilbane Construction to provide the design and
Spokane, Washington construction of a new 66,000 square foot Spokane Materials and Recycling Technology
OWNER (SMART) Center on 10.26 acres of land leased from the Spokane International Airport.

PROJECT DELIVERY The design-build team also coordinated the installation of state of the art owner -
Design/Build provided process equipment, including an optical sorter and a glass crusher with a
hurricane vacuum system.
The new Waste Management facility was designed to process and market all recyclables,
including items not previously accepted for recycling, such as: more plastic containers,
tubs, clam shells, milk cartons, juice boxes, all paper products, cereal boxes, beverage
boxes, glass bottles, jars, tin and aluminum cans, and small scrap metal, including old
pots and pans, foil and pie tins.

ORANGE TRANSFER STATION RENOVATION

L O C AT I O N Waste Management of Orange County operates two transfer stations, which each

FACILITY (TOMF)

L O C AT I O N The Tulare County Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility (TOMF) is a new facility

CITY OF GLENDALE LANDFILL RELOCATION PROJECT

L O C AT I O N The $4.6 million Municipal Landfill Relocation Project consisted of the design and
Glendale, Arizona construction of a new Administration Building, a high-tech Scale House and an
OWNER Equipment Maintenance building. Due to funding, the project was constructed in
City of Glendale phases.
COMPLETION DATE Phase I: Administration Building: 4,368 SF. Provides larger, updated staff workplace
2017 and offices, including ADA accommodations. New features include large restrooms
PROJECT SIZE with locker storage and showers, a training and break room and a conference room
10,400 SF (3 buildings) equipped with a large screen monitor, Wi-Fi and video conferencing capability.
PROJECT DELIVERY Phase II: Scale House: 784 SF. Features: two inbound scales, including one equipped
CMAR with high-tech attendant-free wireless weighing software systems and two outbound
scales (one bi-directional scale and one multi-axle vehicle scale) with drive-up service
windows, a digital scale system, traffic lights and automatic gates to accommodate
large volumes of customers.
Phase III: Equipment Maintenance Building: 5,249 SF. prefab, covered and enclosed
specially designed to accommodate CAT Compactors and track vehicles. Features
two heavy duty equipment work bays with steel-plate approaches and four overhead
retractable entry/exit doors, an exterior wash-down area, large tool and storage areas,
an overhead crane for large heavy equipment maintenance and an external recycled
fluids storage/extraction area.

GOODYEAR OPERATIONS FLEET MAINTENANCE FACILITY

August 2014 The fleet facility totals 14,750 SF and occupies a 4.24 acre site within the 90-acre

CMAR for large heavy duty vehicles. This includes servicing the fire department’s largest fire
apparatus vehicles.

The fleet facility consists of four heavy duty bays, four light duty bays, one tire bay, one
smaller bay, and one exterior drivethrough bay with the following support spaces:

L O C AT I O N Arrington Watkins was selected to re-evaluate an existing needs assessment and
Glendale, Arizona master plan, produce a current master plan and program, and design the first phase
OWNER of this multi-phase project. Phase I involved site development of the 44-acre site; an
City of Glendale 80,000 sf equipment/vehicle maintenance shop; 20,000 sf warehouse and 70,000 sf of
COMPLETION DATE tenant improvements.
2004 Within the Vehicle Maintenance Building, the drive through mechanic bays are grouped
PROJECT SIZE in units of two, sharing common equipment and computers. Cold air from evaporative
170,000 SF roof coolers is piped down to the shop floor to help cool mechanics during the hot
PROJECT DELIVERY summer months.
CMAR The work bays are divided between light-duty equipment, such as trucks and cars, and
heavy-duty equipment, such as trash collection trucks, front-end loaders and large
tractors.
The heavy-duty equipment bays features 35-foot high ceilings allowing mechanics
to pull large hydraulic cylinders from city trash trucks and allow the use of 2-ton and
5-ton bridge cranes. To span the bays, Arrington Watkins used 100-foot long, 50-ton
steel trusses on 20-foot centers. The structural steel deck roof system is pierced with
ribbon skylights throughout the two major service bays to provide natural lighting and
acoustic panels deaden noise transmission.

One of Arrington Watkins’ first projects in 1994 was a Design-Build project, and since
then we have completed more than 100 projects using the Design-Build delivery
method. These projects range from $2.4 million to over $320 million in construction
