‘Govt always pays
its debts on time’

KUALA LUMPUR: The federal
government has never failed to meet its
obligations to repay its debts according
to schedule, the Dewan Negara was told
yesterday.

Deputy Finance Minister II Yamani
Hafez Musa said this proves that the
government remains disciplined in
terms of sustainable debt management.

He said as of end September, the
national debt stood at RM969.3 billion,
or 64% of gross domestic product
(GDP).

“Of the total, statutory debt amounts
to RM905 billion or 59.7% of GDP,
which is still below the statutory limit of
60%. The statutory debt limit was raised
to 65% of GDP in October,” he said in
response to a supplementary question
from Senator Datuk Teo Eng Tee, who
wished to know about the country’s
debt situation.

Yamani Hafez said the
implementation of fiscal reconciliation
measures as well as better revenue
collection post-crisis are expected to
gradually reduce the level of debt and
debt service burden to ensure fiscal
sustainability in the long run.

“Servicing our debts is an
expenditure that we can still afford to
meet and it is given priority.” – Bernama

by flash floods – when a large crowd, believed
to be affected residents, broke in and
looted several grocery chain stores of food
and essentials.

The stores that were inundated with flood
waters up to about three feet did not deter
the crowd.

The people ripped open the steel shutters
of the stores and carted away mainly
food items.

It is said they resorted to the act after
claiming they had not received food aid from
authorities since their homes were
submerged in flood waters.

Shah Alam police chief ACP Baharudin
Mat Taib said police despatched personnel
to the affected stores on getting wind of
the looting.

“The situation is under control now. We
have stationed our personnel there and have
sought the assistance of the General
Operations Force to prevent crimes in
the area.”

He said police have yet to receive reports
from the owners of the affected stores.

Baharudin urged the store owners to come
forward and lodge police reports.

Meanwhile, he said the death toll from the
floods was six. – by Charles Ramendran

HONG KONG was once

many old masters took
their secrets to the grave – now a
generation of tech-savvy, globally
connected young artists are trying
to keep the trade alive.

Karen Chan describes herself as
a “neon nomad”.

Better known by her professional

long been fascinated by the
kaleidoscopic neon lights that
bathed Hong Kong streets in a warm
glow.

But finding someone who might
teach her was far from easy.

The trade has long been
dominated by masters – “si fu” in
Cantonese – who guarded their
knowledge even as neon gave way to

and city officials began clamping
down on unsafe hoardings.

“The si fu will not pass on all the
knowledge, especially if there are no
guidelines or manuals, they will
only pass on their skills to their own
descendants,” Chan told AFP.

Few family members wanted to
take up a skill that was becoming
redundant so many masters died
without passing on their knowledge.

“If you have very valuable skill or
knowledge, you should be
spreading it around so that it could
live as well,” the 33-year-old artist
lamented. “Overprotection can be a
cause for a lot of crafts to die.”
