BUTTONS

There are some generally accepted rules with buttons such as not fastening the
bottom button on the front jacket. This is a traditional rule that has many stories
of how it came to be, but ultimately it creates a much more flattering silhouette.
When your clothing is made for you, the sleeve buttonholes can be functional,
and many gentlemen highlight this by leaving the last button open or using a
contrasting colour in the thread.

POCKETS

Patch – The simplest and most casual of the pocket styles is the patch pocket.
Your next sports jacket would look complete with a patch pocket, but we wouldn’t
recommend this style for a formal jacket.

Flap – As the name suggests, this pocket features a protective flap of cloth to
cover the pocket’s opening. Flap pockets are the most common jacket pockets
and can be sewn on any jacket at a variety of angles. As an added bonus, a flap
pocket may be tucked in at more formal occasions to appear as a jetted pocket.

56

Jetted – This is the most formal of the pocket styles. A jetted pocket is a thin,
horizontal opening that is sewn into the jacket liner and doesn’t have an outer
flap. You’ll see these most often on sleek dinner jackets and other formal jackets.

Ticket – If you’d like to show off your bespoke jacket, a ticket pocket is the way to
go. Ticket pockets are generally located on the right side of the jacket just above
the main flap pocket and are approximately half the size.

57

Breast Pocket – The breast pocket is often used to display a harmonising silk
handkerchief, but we actually make the pocket bag from lining which can be
pulled out if the moment requires a more flamboyant gesture!

Vents allow for ease of movement and give additional comfort when we sit. You
may choose double (side) vents, a single (centre) vent or no vents on the back
of your jacket.

CLOTH AND TRIMMINGS

At Harris and Howard, you don’t just pick out a jacket—you design it. Choose
from thousands of cloths and trimmings to customise the lining, buttons and
threads. But don’t stop there! Take your jacket to the next level with functional cuff
buttons, contrasting buttonhole thread and single or double lapel buttonholes.
Have your name embroidered on the inside to brand yourself or your business
and completely personalise your jacket.

TROUSERS

“Like every good man, I strive for perfection, and, like every ordinary man, I have
found that perfection is out of reach – but not the perfect suit.”– Edward Tivnan
Pantaloons, breeches, jeans, slacks, pants – no matter what you call them, a
pair of well-fitted trousers are an essential part of any outfit. The main idea
to remember about trousers is that while they are crucial to any outfit, they
should never be the main focal point where attention is drawn. We design our
trousers to provide you with the freedom of movement you need to sit, stand,
walk or ride comfortably all day, everyday. Trousers should shape a man’s body
naturally—avoiding bunches and wrinkles around the thighs.

68

TROUSER POCKETS

Practical and functional pockets are indispensable elements in well-designed
trousers. Most formal trousers will have a straight front pocket that is almost
invisible to the eye, while a more casual look can be achieved with a slanted or
scooped cut. You can choose whether or not to include back pockets with or
without buttons or flaps, depending on the style of trouser you are after.

CUFFS AND TROUSER LENGTH

The length of your trousers is an important element in their design, as it will
alter the overall look of your outfit. Our bespoke trousers are designed to break
at the appropriate length to showcase your shoes (read on to see the many
shoe options Harris and Howard has to offer!)
If you’re a gentleman wanting to visually shorten the look of longer legs, turn-
ups are an excellent option. The weight of the cuff aids in keeping your trousers
straight and stabilized throughout the day. Trouser cuffs are not known to have
a solely formal or casual look, so they can be added to any trouser. However, a
general rule to stand by is the pairing of pleated trousers with cuffs and non-
pleated trousers without cuffs to maintain balance.

71

PLEATS

The general fashion rules on pleats change often. Sometimes they’re regarded
as the style of the season, other times they’re discouraged entirely until they
make another return in later seasons. Selecting whether or not to include pleats
will depend on the style of trouser you are after, the width of your legs and the
type of activities you will be undertaking. Pleats add additional flexibility and
movement to the front of trousers and maintain a smooth front when you sit or
walk around. A single pleat is the most common style, however double pleats
can be worn by men with wider legs.

WAISTCOATS

“If you can’t be better than your competition, just dress better.” – Anna Wintour
A well-crafted waistcoat delivers a classic look that can truly transform an outfit.
Waistcoats that match the cloth of the jacket and trousers to make up a three
piece suit provide a very elegant look, while a contrasting waistcoat can add
colour and informality to a sports coat or blazer.

78

Our craftsmen will measure and cut your waistcoat to fit snuggly to your body,
allowing for a sharp look with maximum ease of movement. You can choose to
include pocket flaps and coloured jetting, and notch, peak, or shawl lapels or no
lapels at all.

BESPOKE SHIRTS

“The difference between style and fashion is quality.” – Giorgio Armani

Whether you like to keep it simple with solid crisp whites or you enjoy a variety
of colours, stripes and checks, there is no mistaking the look and feel of a shirt
that has been made to your measurements.

Ready to wear shirts are usually selected by collar size alone or sometimes
combined with a sleeve length option, but generally are baggy due to the fact
that they are made to accommodate the largest possible audience.

The wide choice of different styles of collars, cuffs, and pocket designs are just
some of the advantages of your own custom shirt. The finishing touch of a
monogram, whether discrete or made to ‘pop’, set the wearer aside as someone
who is prepared to invest in their appearance. The use of contrasting stitching,
coloured buttons and harmonized or patterned trim add an individual accent
to your clothing so that you can be sure of owning something which truly is one
of a kind.

86

MEASURED TO FIT

We take over 20 measurements to ensure your shirts are tailored to fit you, even
allowing for a little extra room around the cuff to accommodate your watch, if
necessary. Each shirt will be designed to a length and cut that flatters your body
shape and that allows for ease of movement and an all around comfortable fit.

ble and stylish decisions on the best shirt collar for you.

Cuffs don’t just offer a vital function, they also provide an opportunity for discreet
design details. Selecting the cuff style, length, and trims will alter the look of
your garment. Finally, complete your cuff with contrasting buttonhole stitching,
