Kayak Selection
Your enjoyment, comfort and safety greatly depend on selecting the right kayak for
your personal skill level and style of paddling. It is therefore important that you consider
which of the many kayak sizes, designs and features will best suit your needs.
One of the keys to buying the right boat is to study and paddle as many different kayaks as possible.
Often, people will purchase a kayak based on stability, looks and price. Although these features
are important, there are many other factors to consider.
Ask yourself the following questions to narrow down your selection:
Q: What kind of paddling will you be doing? Will you mostly kayak close to home for day-trips, venture farther
on weekend camping trips or embark on long-distance expeditions? Will you use your kayak for fishing or photography?
Q: What level of kayaker are you? Are you planning to take lessons to improve your skills and confidence?
A wide, flat bottomed kayak will not always perform or edge as well as a narrower, more performance oriented kayak.
Don’t underestimate your skills or how quickly you will progress.
Q: Have you considered a tandem kayak?
If you are likely to be paddling with someone most of the time, you may want to consider a double kayak.
Doubles are especially good when pairing paddlers of different strengths. They are faster, more stable and cost less than
two single kayaks. However, a double doesn’t have as much storage per person and may not be easily paddled or handled by one person.
Tandems may also accommodate a third paddler or a large pet in a centre hatch. The Passat G3 is an excellent means
to get a family of three on the water.
When you finally narrow your decision to one or two models, it’s time to find out if you’re getting the best
value for your kayak dollar. Utilize the value per dollar comparison guide on Page 10-11 to discover the value
in each Seaward kayak. Once you determine your basic needs, it’s simpler to select the design and features
which complement your paddling style.
Seaward Design 3
Seaward designs are fish form with shallow “V”, semi “V” or multi-chine hulls. Fish form kayaks are slightly
wider forward of the cockpit for an efficient flow through the water that increases hull speed & tracking.
A shallow “V” hull provides high initial stability and is excellent for nature watching and photography.
A semi “V” gives excellent tracking, dynamic control and a higher level of seaworthiness in adverse conditions.
A multi-chined hull has well defined edges where the hull surfaces meet. Chines provide a unique feel with
a solid stability for edging turns.
Seaward Kayaks stay on course in challenging conditions. The hull design and low windage each
contribute to this. Excellent tracking is not at the expense of maneuverability, as with “stiff ”
tracking kayaks. Seaward designs turn easily empty or fully loaded, especially when leaned.
This combination of dependable tracking and effortless turning makes a Seaward kayak
equally adept at travelling great distances as well as maneuvering in rock gardens
and shallow coves.
Craftsmanship
Composite kayaks are lightweight and beautifully detailed, crafted from fibreglass
or Kevlar fabric. Fibreglass is light and Kevlar is lighter.
Seaward’s experienced technicians use the highest quality materials to craft their kayaks.
Hand laminating the composite fabric and precisely saturating each layer with the correct amount
of resin ensures a perfect bond between layers. This process is labour intensive but the Seaward
technicians produce the strongest and most durable kayaks on the market today. The hull and deck
are joined with fibreglass seams on the inside and the outside. The outside seam receives cloth and
two layers of gel coat in any Seaward color. Again, this is a more labour intensive and more difficult process,
but it is structurally stronger than other manufacturing procedures. Additionally, every kayak is weighed three
times during fabrication and assembly to ensure that quality control benchmarks are met at every stage.
All the bulkheads on Seaward built kayaks are made of composite materials and glassed in place. They are 100% air
and watertight. Many of Seaward’s kayaks are available in High Volume versions. This does not alter the shape
or performance of the hull but raises the deck by 3⁄4” which creates additional depth in the cockpit and creates more
cargo space. This extra height also allows larger paddlers easier entry and exit from the cockpit.
Seaward’s ruddered kayak models feature a 12” Ultra-high Molecular Weight (UHMW) keel guard on the stern
of the hull. This durable and replaceable strip protects the kayak’s stern from the ravages of landing on stoney and
barnacle covered beaches. These models also feature a rubber based, Wichard™ stainless steel U-bolt (mounted
toward the kayak’s stern) for security locking and to prevent the carry handle from scuffing the gel coat.
Seaward Warranty
The Seaward Warranty is unsurpassed in the kayaking industry. Since October 1st, 2001, Seaward offers
a Lifetime Limited Transferable Warranty on all new Seaward kayaks. You can be confident that your Seaward
kayak has been precisely engineered and handcrafted to a very high standard. It is safe, strong, seaworthy
and comfortable.
Seaward’s commitment to quality extends to custormer service. Our staff maintains the highest
standards of customer service whether by personalized telephone attention, online warranty
registration, or prompt email responses.

Seaward’s ‘No Compromise’ 7
commitment to paddler safety
is demonstrated by these
innovative features
Seaward’s exclusive safeHATCH™ system provides three levels of security, offering
greater peace of mind while paddling in challenging conditions.
The safeHATCH™ system starts with a tethered hard fibreglass hatch cover providing
protection from heavy splashing and impact. Under this is the tethered neoprene cover which
seals out water and keeps your gear safe and dry. These are both held to the deck by two
separate shock cords with easy release tabs. In the unlikely event of loss or damage to either
or both of these hatch covers, the shock cord system used to hold down the hatches can
be re-routed around the fibreglass coaming to securely hold down any waterproof material such as
a cockpit cover, plastic bag or tarp. The result is a safe return home without the need for tools or tape.
Gear can be easily loaded into large hatch openings. Every Seaward bow hatch opening is 13 ” long
by 8 3⁄4” wide and each stern hatch opening is 16” by 10 1⁄4” wide.
Three Seaward Models are available with the convenient 7 3⁄4” round day hatch just behind the paddler
to easily retrieve gear.
Seaward’s exclusive Self Rescue System (SRS)™ provides two additional levels of recovery in addition
to your paddle float.
• Seaward provides nylon rescue straps mounted on the deck directly behind the cockpit. The paddle slides
under these straps at right angles to the kayak and stabilizes the boat. This provides a solid connection
between the paddle blade and the kayak for deep water re-entry. After re-entry the paddle is easily released
from the straps by pulling the bright red tab.
• Seaward sews a paddle pocket into the underside of every high density foam seat bottom cushion for use
as a secondary paddle float.
The cockpit comfort is one of the most important aspects of any kayak. This is why Seaward
created a configuration that not only can be easily adjusted, but can also be modified to any paddler’s
requirements. Changing from our factory supplied components to a formed seat or a sling-style back
band has never been easier.
Seaward’s pivoting backrest provides great support for your lower back. The backrest can be moved
forward or back by installing it into any of three pre-drilled holes. Moving the backrest is easy
thanks to the factory installed wing nuts. The only tool required is a Phillips-head screwdriver.
The seat bottom is crafted using the highest quality closed mini-cell foam surrounded by a mold
resistant nylon fabric. Buckled to the bulkhead for security and adjustment, the shaped seat
bottom has a Velcro strip at the rear, which allows padding to be added or the existing
padding to be customized.
An underdeck mesh bag can be fitted into any Seaward Kayak. This low profile
pocket is useful for storing items which could otherwise clutter the deck or
PFD pockets. An Aquameter compass can also be installed onto the compass
platform forward of the cockpit.
solid foot brace rudder control
Safety and performance
The Seaward smartRUDDER™ system allows paddlers to firmly brace
while retaining rudder control. By pivoting the foot pads instead of
sliding them, you get safer, more efficient control.
• 6061-T6 anodized aluminum
• 3/32” Stainless steel cables
• Low friction Teflon cable housings
• Separate activator (deploy/recover) lines
• Rudder tie down
• UHMW Friction and wear plates
“should be uniformly adopted Rudder systems have added a new level of safety and maneuverability to paddling.
by boat manufacturers for boats Until recently, these advances came at the expense of solid bracing. The Seaward OEM
equipped with rudders” smartRUDDER™ pedals pivot. This allows the paddler to control the rudder while
maintaining a safe and firm brace. Seaward Kayaks’ smartRUDDER™ system enables
Sea Kayaker Magazine paddlers of all skill levels to maneuver their kayaks efficiently without experiencing
Navigator review the sponginess of sliding foot pedals and the sloppy feel inherent in relaxing a knee
brace. Also, in the unlikely event of rudder failure, the paddler retains solid bracing
unlike sliding rudder pedal systems. Seaward lock-out foot pedals are easily adjusted
to fit the paddler.
An optional sliding foot pedal system is available for rental companies and outfitters.
“Beauty, efficiency Seaward’s rudders are handcrafted using anodized 6061-T6 hardened marine aluminum for
and symmetry” corrosion resistance. The stainless steel rudder cables are 3/32” – twice the thickness of most
kayak manufacturers - and are routed through low friction Teflon housings affixed under the deck.
Symmetrical rudder up haul and down haul lines are strategically placed for ease of use. For added
security, all Seaward’s ruddered kayaks are also equipped with a tie down rudder bracket and securing
shock cord.
The paddlersideRDS is an exclusive feature of Seaward’s Luna and Cosma kayaks and is optional on
the Tyee. The rudder deployment lines run cleanly beneath the deck and emerge at a pulley on the
rudder. Rudder deployment is controlled from the side of the cockpit so the paddler doesn’t have
to reach to the rear deck to deploy the rudder.
