GENERAL Most personality tests are objective in that they
have standard methods of administration and
scoring. However, in the late 1930s, the Rorschach
was classified as a projective test. The term
applied to a range of many different tasks that
could be used for personality assessment.

BIOGRAPHY HERMANN
RORSCHARCH

PSYCHIATRIST

Born : 8 November 1884, Zürich, Switzerland
Died : 2 April 1922 (aged 37), Herisau, Switzerland
Nationality : Swiss
Parents : Ulrich Rorschach, Philippine Rorschach
Children : Wadin Rorschach, Elizabeth Rorschach

He is a Swiss psychiatrist who invented the inkblot
test that is named after his name and that was widely
used clinically for diagnosing psychopathology.

BIOGRAPHY He is the eldest son of an art teacher. He considered
becoming an artist but chose medicine instead.

SECONDARY SCHOOL
As a secondary school student, he was nicknamed
Kleck, which means “inkblot,” because of his interest in
sketching.

IN 1912,
He attended several universities before receiving his M.D.
from the University of Zürich.

Then he worked in Russia for a year before returning to
Switzerland to practice.

For several years his main interest was psychoanalysis,
and he became a staunch advocate of the then new
psychoanalytic technique in Swiss medical circles.

IN 1917,
He discovered the work of Szyman Hens who had studied
the fantasies of his subjects by using inkblot cards.

IN 1918,

He began his own experiments with 15 accidental inkblots.
By showing the blots to patients and asking them “What
might this be?”. The subjective responses enabled him to
distinguish among his subjects on the basis of their
perceptive abilities, intelligence, and emotional
characteristics.

IN 1919,
He was elected vice president of the Swiss Psychoanalytic
Society.

IN 1921,

He published the results of his studies on 300 mental
patients and 100 others in Psychodiagnostik. The book
attracted little attention before He died the next year, but his
method was later widely used as a tool for psychological
evaluation and diagnosis.

How does
Rorschach test

work?

The idea of the test is to show a meaning less or
ambiguous to a person, in this case an inkblot.
And the mind of that person will work hard to
generate the meaning of the image. When asking
them about what they see, the image that they
see can tell about themselves, their feelings, and

how they see the world.

When doing the test, they will have a pile of inkblot
pictures and then the test taker will have to identify what

they see. The test takes around 1.5 hour to administer,
analyze, and score.

Analyzing and Scoring

The scoring process is analyzed on three
main factors:

- Contents
- Determinants
- Location

Note:
There may be more

factors that can be used
to analyze, these are only

the main ones.

Content is the name or class of CONTENTS
the objects the test taker can see
or use to respond.

It includes:

- Nature: anything weather-
related or even astronomical
or space-related. Including the
sun, planets, water, and
rainbows.

- Animal Feature: an incomplete
animal feature. Including the
claw of a crab, cat's head, bat
wings, and bird beaks.

- Whole Human: a complete
human figure.

- Human Feature: an incomplete CONTENTS
human form or feature. Including
legs, heads, or a body with a
specific part, like a person without
a head.

- Fictional/Mythical Human Detail:
an incomplete human figure with
fictional or mythical features.
Including the wings of an angel or
a centaur.

- Sex: anything involving any
activity of a sexual nature, sex
organs, or sexual reproduction.
Including intercourse or breasts.

DETERMINANTS Determinants are where the
examiner/psychologist considers
the reasons why the patients see
what they see. There are five
identified categories of inkblot
determinants that the patient
could be responding to:

- Form
- Movement
- Color
- Shading
- Pairs & Reflections

These categories are just a
broad categories, it can be
more categories that need to
be considered.

Location is how much of the LOCATION
inkblot the patient used to
describe an image. Meaning
that patients can use the whole
inkblot painting, some of the
painting, a little part of the
painting, or even a white space
on the inkblot painting.

The following are letters to
describe how much space did
patients use to describe the
painting:

- W: means the whole inkblot was
used to depict an image.

- D: means a commonly described
part of the blot was used.

- Dd: means an uncommonly
described or unusual detail
was used.

- S: means the white space in the
background was used.

TIME

Apart from those three factors, the time that
patients take to answer and describe the
painting could indicate the comfortable level
of patients when they are around people.

- Fast response could mean that the patient is
being at ease with others and being
comfortable in social situations and
relationships.

- A delayed response could reveal that the
individual struggles with social situations,
interactions, and relationships.

Analyzing

When it comes to analyzing processes, it
is a very complex process. Even though
we have the indication factors, it can still
be very complex. Because it requires a

wealth of knowledge concerning
personality dynamics generally and
considerable experience with the method

of the Rorschach test precisely.

Once every card has been shown and the
psychologist correctly codes each
response, an interpretative report is

created based on the patient's scores.
The report seeks to integrate the findings

from across all reactions from the test.
One outlying answer is not likely to
impact the test's conclusions overall.

Analyzing

The organizational activity of the
response assesses how well-
organized the reaction from the
patient is. And the form quality is
evaluated, like how well the answer
fits the shown inkblot.

An example would be if the inkblot
looks like a bear, and the patient
describes a bear. This would be an
ordinary form quality, which is
acceptable and not wildly imaginative.
