KCU-Joplin opened in July, 2017 with an
initial class of 164 and opened 2018 with
another 164 students; the first steps on its
promise to bring a 600-student medical
school when at a full four years. KCU-Joplin
is the first new medical school in Missouri
in nearly fifty years.

KCU worked with MSSU to help it realign
its pre-med curricula. In this program, up to
twenty-five top performing MSSU pre-med
students can go to KCU in their fourth year
with no application and no MCAT testing;
effectively creating a seven year program.
Regional hospitals are expanding and creating
rotation and residency opportunities for the
students, emphasizing the path the students
can take to build careers in this area.

MSSU likewise is already benefitting with a
jump in student enrollment in its pre-med

partnership with KCU has been students who

A partnership that has brought success to our
area for the medical sector was creation of
the Regional Medical School Alliance. With
two major medical systems and numerous
smaller hospitals in the region, one of the
long held concerns was finding enough
doctors to fill the needs. In particular, there
was a feeling that a medical school in the
region would not only train doctors, but also
attract regional talent that wanted to stay
here and serve the area population.

Initial discussions on the concept among
the hospitals and Missouri Southern State

evident that state budgets were not going
to allow creation of a new public university-
based medical school, so discussion turned
to private medical schools. While set-aside

Another aspect of Project Equity’s initial assessment

Co-op models require literal and metaphorical

aren’t committed to developing an equitable
space, then the co-op won’t function as intended.
While the initial business culture isn’t a make-or-

While the conversion itself typically takes nine

businesses for two years after they convert,
providing resources on developing healthy co-op

Adams described the conversion as a relatively
straightforward process of jumping through
a series of hoops, but he recognized that the
conversion wouldn’t have been possible without

RICH IN HISTORY
Before Lakewood was Lakewood, locals knew
it as “The Prairie” because of its vast open fields.
Steilacoom and Nisqually Indians used the prairie
as a ready source of food and held gatherings
before white hunters, trappers and settlers moved
in. Located midway between the Columbia River
and the city of Vancouver, B.C., this prairie land
was chosen by the British in 1833 as the site of Fort
Nisqually, one of the fur trading post operated by
the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Settlers soon set up farming in the area. One of
these farms, now the site of state-owned Western
State Hospital, was leased by the U.S. Army in
1849 to serve as a military post following an Indian
attack on Fort Nisqually. The new fort, called Fort
Steilacoom, was used to quell Indian uprisings.
