Your future starts now! The most successful students are those who start with a goal or plan. While all plans will change from time to time, having a final destination in mind at the end of high school will make your learning experience more fun and meaningful. Here are some tips and essential vocabulary to help you get started. Be a good student Check and monitor your grades Get involved in a positive school activity Stay focused on a goal Explore your career interests and talents Think about building a resume for your first job GPA: (Grade Point Average) High school is the first time grades really matter. If you fail a class, you may have to repeat the same course again in order to graduate. If you plan to attend a technical school or college, they will ask for your grade point average to see if you are ready for a higher level of learning. Credits: The state of Texas requires a minimum number of credits to graduate high school. Most classes you take are worth 1.0 credit. If you take a semester course, it is worth a ½ credit. If you take a “double-blocked” class for two periods, it is worth 2.0 credits. There are also requirements for how many credits you need in certain areas, such as English, Math, Science, Social Studies, PE, Fine Arts, and Electives. If you get behind in your credits due to absences or failures, you have to take summer school or give up your fun classes to get back on track. Prerequisite: Some classes have prerequisite requirements. This means you have to take and PASS an introductory class first. For example, Biology is a prerequisite class to enroll in Health Science Theory; and Law Enforcement I is a prerequisite to Law Enforcement 2. PLANNING MY FUTURE Career Planning Guide - 3
