3 LEADERSHIP & STAFF Principal’s Report As the school year comes to a close, it’s a moment of reflection and celebration for our vibrant school community. As the Acting Principal, I am filled with pride and gratitude as I look back on the remarkable journey we’ve undertaken together over the past academic year. This year has been a testament to the resilience, determination, and spirit of our students, teachers, and support staff. Our school community has walked alongside, demonstrating commitment to academic and sporting excellence, personal growth, and community engagement. Our students have once again proven that they are not just learners but scholars, embracing challenges and pursuing knowledge with enthusiasm. From outstanding academic performances in standardized tests to the creativity displayed in various projects, the dedication of our students to their studies is truly commendable. Our teachers, too, have shown remarkable adaptability and innovation, ensuring that our students receive a high-quality education, whether in person or through virtual platforms. Education is not just about textbooks and exams; it’s about fostering holistic development. This year, our students have not only excelled academically but have also grown as individuals. Through sporting and extracurricular activities, leadership programs, and community service, they’ve discovered and nurtured their passions, developing into well-rounded individuals ready to face the challenges of the world beyond our school walls. A school is not just a building; it’s a community. This year, our school community has come together to build a sense of belonging and connection. Our home school partnerships were well attended. We celebrated sporting success at our sports prize giving and had our inaugural subject selection evening. Our whole school assemblies celebrated the success of our sports teams. I encourage and invite more of our parents into our kura next year to demonstrate that through the power of unity, our community will thrive. As we bid farewell to this academic year, we also eagerly anticipate the opportunities and possibilities that the future holds. The experiences and lessons learned during the past year will undoubtedly shape our approach to education and community building in the coming years. I am confident that the resilience and adaptability we’ve witnessed will continue to be guiding principles for our school community. To our departing staff, my best wishes to you and your whanau. I thank you for your service to this kura and to the dedication you have shown to our students and parents. To our graduating seniors, as you embark on new adventures, remember that you carry with you the knowledge, skills, and values instilled during your time here. To our returning students, I look forward to another year of growth, discovery, and collaboration. In closing, I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this academic year a success. Together, we have created a learning environment that not only survives but thrives in the face of challenges. Here’s to a well-deserved break, a summer of rejuvenation, and a future filled with endless possibilities. Wishing you all a restful and joyous summer break! 4 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 LEADERSHIP & STAFF Board Chair Report On behalf of our School Board, I’m privileged to be able to provide this statement to our school and wider community. To our teaching staff – you have one of the most challenging, but also fulfilling jobs, literally shaping and changing the lives of the hundreds of students that walk through our doors. Not to go unnoticed – but we also acknowledge our extended staff. From our administrative team, to our grounds staff, to our leadership team and all those in between. All of you help the school function effectively and we offer our heartfelt thanks for the commitment you continue to exert yourselves with. It has certainly been a year of change. We said farewell to both Waru Clark, who resigned from his position at the Board table to take up an opportunity at Alfriston College. Grant McMillan, who served as Principal also left at the end of Term 3 after leading us for 7 years. We had the opportunity to thank Grant for all he had done and achieved here at JCHS and wished him well as he returned to a senior position with the NZ Army. Thanks must go to Tina Filipo for taking on that leadership role at this time and to the wider Leadership team for carrying on with the “business”. At this point in time, the Board are in the middle of recruiting and engaging the next Principal, so we’ re hopeful that an announcement will go out to the community in the near future. We’re not sure what next year will bring especially under a new government, but we can see things getting tougher for many of our whanau. So I encourage you all, students included – if you need help don’t be shy to reach out to others, because we’ve got so many awesome people in our school and in our community. No doubt there will also be changes made within the education system, which we will navigate through with the best interests of our students in mind. Take heart in the fact that the work of the board and staff is far from over. We will continue to work hard to accomplish things together to make a difference to the students and community we serve. To all students who have made the choice to return to school next year – we applaud you. Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently. To our seniors who leave us this year – we wish you great success in whatever you chose to do. Remember - Today is your opportunity to build the tomorrow you want In ending, I take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank my fellow Board members as it has been a pleasure to serve alongside you all. Ngā manaakitanga kia koutou Presiding Member On behalf of James Cook High School Board Kia orana, talofa lava, malo e lelei, bula vinaka, mauri, Namaste and warm greeting to you all Kia a tatou e tau nei, ka nui taku mihi... 5 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 LEADERSHIP & STAFF Head Girls Report For me, being the head student is not about the position or the title but it is about action and example which can make a difference. Therefore It is an honor and privilege for me to be one of JCHS’s head students for this year 2023. My experience in James Cook High school has been a very long one. My two brothers came here as well as my sister , and as the last of my siblings to come here, it will be a strange goodbye. Speeches like this force you to reflect, so we’ll start with the obvious. My time here has been filled with incredible experiences that I will hold onto for the rest of my life, and without the special and positive culture of the school, I would not be who I am today. “It was hard but we’ve made it”, 5 years here, and what a year to finish it off. As we look back I just want to thank everybody who has been a part of my journey. From the smallest encouragements to the biggest achievements, I can’t express enough how thankful I am. Throughout this journey, I have learnt many things that I can assure you of a great outcome. Through all the blood, sweat and tears shedded, I’d like to acknowledge the sacrifices made behind scenes and beforehand for we would have never accomplished such potential without the villages that were right behind us; our school staff & friends but most importantly our families. Helen Taugauli year 13 head of health and wellbeing signing out. Helen Taugauli As head prefects of the graduating Class of 2023 at James Cook High School, our reflective journey through academia has been a profound exploration of knowledge, self-discovery, and personal growth. From the onset, the school embraced us with a diverse and supportive community, shaping us into individuals who celebrate uniqueness and strive for academic excellence. Our educational voyage was guided by inspiring teachers and friendships that served as guiding stars, illuminating the path to success and development. James Cook High School provided a rich tapestry of experiences beyond the classroom, including sports, arts, and community service, fostering teamwork, leadership, and a sense of social responsibility. These extracurricular endeavors have contributed to our holistic development, preparing us for the challenges beyond the school gates. The curriculum at James Cook challenges our intellect, nurturing critical thinking skills beyond textbooks and exams. Life lessons learned within these walls have equipped us with the tools to navigate the uncharted waters of the future. As we set sail into the next chapter of our lives, we carry the invaluable lessons learned within the walls of James Cook High School. Our journey finds resonance in the wisdom of Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” This biblical verse encapsulates the essence of our educational voyage, emphasizing the importance of faith, trust, and humility in facing the unknown. In gratitude to the James Cook High School, We express our appreciation for being the compass that guided us through our formative years. While our current academic voyage may have reached its destination, the lessons learned and forged friendships will forever be integral to our navigational charts. As we bid farewell, we set our sights on futures as boundless as the horizons we explored at James Cook High School, and We wish you smooth sailing and favorable winds as you navigate the next chapter, Class of 2023. Jazmyn Ngametua
6 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 LEADERSHIP & STAFF 6 Head Boys Report In the book “The art of war “ written by Sun Tzu there lies a quote which states “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.” This quote is the best description of my past 5 years of life at James Cook. Through trial and error with both the academic side of school and the sporting side. Major highs and many lows. From great upsets to setting a foundation for those who will look to take their first step into the life of a high school student. No one ever believes Ms Coyne when she says “These next 5 years will fly by fast” because they do. One moment you are 13/14 being enriched with curiosity of what this school will bring you and then in a blink of an eye you are now 17-18 preparing to sail your ship through the ocean of life. High school is where the young minds nourish who they are and who they will become when they leave school and as I am swiftly approaching the final time I will walk out the gate, I will look back on this school as a stepping stone into the man I will become. I have been asked many times by my peers and my juniors, what’s it like to be a Head prefect? or how does it feel to be a Head prefect? Well, the answer is simple. Nothing changes. Of course you get the extra responsibility and the title bestowed upon you is a great honour but how I feel is the same as before I was labeled “Head prefect.” I guess through my time I have always upheld the mana values and my view would be that if you chosen as a Head prefect you have been a Head prefect since the first time you walked into those gates. To the next lot of student who will taking on the mantle of prefect, I wish you the best of luck and to all future prefects I only say that you’ll never always get it right the first time. This will be a sad time for the year 13 students, to my peers I congratulate you on making it this far and seeing it to the end and to the rest of the students at James Cook. enjoy your journey and stray away from the bad influences. Lastly to the Teachers, Deans and Coaches, thank for the opportunity, support, the hardship you have shown us year 13’s not many will say it but we appreciate your hard work you have invested in us over the years. Signing off, Dillon, UPDAWAHS Dillon Paitai As a Student that experienced the most chaotic school years due to covid, i can finally say, “mum we made it” the past 5 years have been the briefest yet most unforgettable years of my life . Never in a million years would i have found myself up there on that stage as a head student/ prefect, never in a million years would i think that 5 years would go by that fast. It only seems like a few months ago i was walking into Mr Prasads Maths class with what i didn’t know but where lifelong memories sat before me. To the dedicated teachers and the staff here at school, Thank you, Thank you for your unwavering belief in us, the endless emails, calls and even instagram messages, though sometimes met with silence, they were appreciated more than we let on. Thank you for your endless push in us to complete our work and thank you for allowing us to feel as if we were more than just students and yous were more than just teachers. To my fellow students, thank you to you all too, undoubtedly the best i could’ve asked for, the friendships forged and the la ughter-inducing memories created a priceless, and promising lifetime connection filled of memories and laughter. Its truly an understatement to say i am proud of being a head student this year. From following my sisters foot steps to surpassing my parents goals for me. Words can’t explain the gratitude I have for the prefect team of 2023. from transforming the nervous, anxious, juniors from 2018 into support pillars for the nervous, anxious, and shy juniors of 2023 ensuring our school is a continuous loop allowing everyone to feel as if they are in a safe place. In all Honesty, I would never change these past 5 years for anything. During my time here I made friendships i know will last a lifetime, I am glad to say that i am leaving this school knowing i have one regret, and that was coming to school late everyday. 11 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 LEADERSHIP & STAFF 2023 will see the end of an era for a long serving member of the staff. After 36 years Mr King has decided it is time to retire. He joined the staff at JC in 1987 as the leader of the Business Studies and Commerce Department. It didn’t take him long to establish himself and become heard in his classroom and around the school. His expertise in finance has been an inspiration to many students. As we have evolved as a school, he has taken on a variety of responsibilities including head of faculty and currently is the school’s timetabler and Principals Nominee making sure all our NCEA grades make it to Wellington. He has held several roles to support the staff including PPTA positions and is a serving member on the teacher’s council. His greatest achievement however must be meeting his wife. Miss Travis soon became Mrs King, and they remained a formidable team in business studies. Their love of dogs has shone, and we will miss seeing Mishka around. We thank him for all he has done for so many of us and wish him well in his retirement. Our ākonga, staff and invited guests gathered at the end of Term 3 for a Pō Atarau (farewell) to acknowledge outgoing Tumuaki, Mr Grant McMillan, for his leadership and contributions in our kura and the community. Grant led our kura with MANA through its successes, changes and challenges for the past 7 and a half years. Surrounded by his family, friends, board members and past colleagues, we all took some time to share our mixed emotions but more importantly, celebrate and honour Grant and wish him well as he begins a new and exciting chapter in his career at the Army Defence Headquarters. Though the impact of Grant’s leadership may never be tangibly measured, the gratitude shared within our kura goes beyond our school gates and is felt within the wider community. Thank you for your unwavering commitment, awhi and dedication, Grant. We wish you and your whānau the very best. Kia kaha, Kia maia, Kia manawanui e rangatira! Whaea Shaquelle studied Theatre & Film at Canterbury University and a Master’s degree in Education at Auckland University. Her skills and talents had taken her to Penrose High Schoolwhere she became HOD Drama & Dance for 5 years, then to Manurewa High Schoolas HOLA Dance for 10 years, then as Leader in Drama and Danceat Alfriston College, and finally in 2019 to James Cook High School as a kaiako in Dance &Drama. Whaea Shaquelle cared for all of our ākonga and always wanted the best for them, with some affectionately calling her ‘Nan or Nanny Maybury’. Her bright and bubbly personality and love for our ākonga will never be forgotten. Moe mai rā whaea Shaquelle. Thank you for all the beautiful memories that we will all cherish! ACADEMIC Health & PE 25 OUTDOOR EDUCATION Level 2 My time in the outdoor ed class was unique and amazing due to the experiences, and slowly making friends with everyone throughout the year. The most enjoyable moments of my outdoor ed journey were bonding as a class and the trips where we would improve those bonds. Persevering together through our camping and camping trips or hanging out together in the open seas enjoying each other’s company. The camping and tramping trips helped me learn perseverance, and the sailing trip taught me to have patience. From these trips I have learnt how to be a better communicator, become more outgoing, helped others when needed, and use my initiative more often. I highly recommend this course for those who are looking for a safe and comfortable way to experience new things outside of their comfort zone, for those looking to build confidence, or those looking for a way to make new friends when overcoming challenging experiences. I’ve enjoyed my time in outdoor ed because of the huge impact it has had on my life; helping me to get to know my classmates better and helping me with my confidence. Hopefully outdoor ed will be able to help you like it has helped me. Aleyjah Rapana, 2023 OUTDOOR EDUCATION Level 3 My time in outdoor ed has been a varied experience leading to us all becoming a better version of ourselves. Through various activities and events where we enjoyed ourselves, the camping trip being my favourite, we all bonded because the struggle was real with the food and we had to help each other to complete the activities and survive ‘teamwork makes the dreamwork!’. We had many funny moments and happy times bonding, especially when Asa and Phoenyx gave me extra food. We came out better and stringer for it. If others were to take this class, I’d say to keep an open mind and that there will be many opportunities that could be scary but all of eventually shape and make you a better and stronger person who’s able to think for themselves and others. Brian Lolohea, 2023 ADVENTURE LEADERSHIP Level 3 My experience in adventure leadership this year has been a roller coaster of emotions; good and bad. What I enjoyed about adventure leadership was the trips, activities, and bonding with my peers. Being in adventure leadership has helped become a more confident person, and a more confident leader. It has also helped me to feel more confident to lead and teach younger students and my peers. Being a part of adventure leadership is a great opportunity that you shouldn’t miss out on because it’s a lot of fun and you’ll enjoy both the good and bad times. It can seem boring learning about some things in the beginning but as you progress throughout the year, it becomes an exciting experience and having a great teacher makes it ten times better. Although she comes off as strict, she’s fun if you listen. I highly recommend you join adventure leadership in 2024. Saumalu Fomai, 2023 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023

ACADEMIC 28 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 EPro8 The Epro8 challenge is an engineering tournament for primary school to high school students, in which teams compete to design machines as quickly as possible that can do certain tasks. This year James Cook High School sent in its strongest senior team yet, which allowed us to reach the Auckland Grand Final for the first time. In the heats and semifinal, we were second in the region. After a difficult and frustrating final, we came 7th place, out of over 200 schools. We are grateful to Mr.Kuriakose for his tremendous support and encouragement. Competing in the finals this year was an amazing experience. We were given a tour of the AUT engineering department, where I saw some amazing technology in the development such as automated cleaning submarines, earthquake-safe hospital equipment, and shock-absorbing joints for bridges and large buildings. In the competition we were pitted against the smartest, toughest students in Auckland, so I am proud of our results. I look forward to next year’s competition! Benaiah Casey

ACADEMIC 31 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 Science In term 3, our Year 12 and 13 Chemistry students visited the incredible Innovation Centre at Massey University in Albany to participate in the Chemical Cluedo workshop. The workshops were run by Dr Debbie Jordan, Senior lecturer in Chemistry and co-chair of the SNCS outreach committee at Massey University. She was accompanied by a team of incredible PhD and Honours students who volunteered their time to run a morning packed with chemistry fun and learning. The students had an intriguing morning of solving the case of “Murder of Professor White” , where they collected samples to gather data from spectrometers in action and interpreted the spectra of organic substances to identify the murderer. The students were well prepared for these tasks and solved the murder very efficiently. The workshops were followed up by guided tours around the Innovation Centre and campus. Visited MWLR- Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, Auckland on 11th August Friday. Students were engaged and showed the enthusiasm for learning. They did some hands on activity for which they were very much excited. ACADEMIC 32 James Cook High School Yearbook 2023 AUCKLAND PARKS Social Sciences TRIP TO ROTORUA YEAR 13 HISTORY TRIP TO WAIKATO 2023 In Term 2, two Year 13 History classes went on a two-day trip to the Waikato. The purpose of the trip was to visit the historical site of RangaririPaa where they could collect primary and secondary evidence on the Waikato Wars for an internal assessment. All students had a fantastic time learning and hearing the enriched stories of what happened during the Waikato wars through a Maori lens. This trip was successful and indeed a great opportunity for our students to learn about the history of our nation outside of the classroom. Thank-you to Matua Shane for his guided support and a huge mihi to his hapu, Ngati Apakura/ NgatiHinetu, for accommodating us at the Kahotea Marae. Acknowledgements also to Roydon Agent for his organisation of the trip and Moravia Tumatavai and Ena Siono-Su’a for their assisted support.
