Mangere College Yearbook 2022

Mangere College Yearbook 2022

Māngere College - 2022 49 Our school prides itself for being at the heart of our community here in Māngere and celebrating the school’s multicultural composition. The Student Council held a Cultural Day on the second week of Term 4 on a Friday. Most students and staff participated and came to school wearing their own cultural outfits from their culture, or clothing from other cultures. The purpose of this day was to further promote inclusivity and the cultural diversity within our school by providing a platform for all students and staff to celebrate and take pride in their identity. The MC Film Academy is back! Those who have a passion for TV, film, photography, performing, or even becoming the next Angelina Jolie or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – or the first YOU, can share your voices – share YOUR STORIES. This year, seniors were able to join, and we were blessed to take part. We were inspired by amazing talent in New Zealand’s Film and TV industry. They included Studio 68 writer and director Vela Manusaute, Brutal Lives film producer Sandra Kailahi, FreshTV & CoconetTV film writer Lisa Taouma, Marks of Mana star FotuoSamoa Jody Jackson, Black Friars creatives Lauie Tofa & Student Council MC Film Academy Denyce Su’a, and two of our very own MC alumni - the Dutty Queen/ Radio host Ernestina Bonsu-Maro and actor/director/film creative DeeJay Fong. Humbled and privileged, we entered the firstever Pasifika Youth Short Film Competition, created by Poporazzi Productions duo, Esera Tanoa’i and his wife Tupe, both actors, directors, and producers. We submitted 3 original shorts. “TAI” a short documentary by Tavake Kamana, “MC Performing Arts Night” a behind the scenes documentary by Caylis Masinamua and “On Time” – a short film based on a true story, by Martha Peo. Perenise Lam’s exceptional performance in “On Time”, earned her the Best Actress Award in the competition. We also walked away with 10 other nominations. We connected with Fast & Furious actor Vinnie Bennet, film animator, comedic artist Michel Mulipola and actor, writer, and director – Nikki Si’ulepa. We thank our teacher and fellow creative, Mr Hermann Arp. We were blessed to hear of his experience as a screenplay writer and imaginative visualiser who fought through many battles yet still stands strong as an inspiration for us. MCFA22 is not done yet. Stay tuned for more exciting adventures as we dream big. It is time that we tell OUR stories, the way they should be told. - Caylis Masinamua CULTURAL DAY

50 Māngere College - 2022 Duke of Edinburgh EXPERIENCE Diversity Programme This year we started a programme called ‘Diversity’ that focuses on building strong relations and creating a safe space for Rainbow and Pasifika youth. We have 2 amazing facilitators from Village Collective (Rainbow Fale) that come in once a week to facilitate interactive workshops based on confidence, leadership, team building and self-discovery. It is so great to see students supporting one another through conversation and participation but most importantly having fun. We are looking forward to seeing this continue and grow in 2023. - Alfie Lafoou Lusa This year we had 25 students who completed the Duke of Edinburgh - Bronze award. To complete this programme, the students had to complete three specific sections — Voluntary Service, Skills and Physical Recreation. The students were able to choose their activities from each section and needed to complete an Adventurous Journey. For the Adventurous Journey part of Duke Of Edinburgh Bronze, our students completed an overnight sailing excursion on the Steinlager 2 yacht. This opportunity was very hands-on and students were tested physically and mentally on the very boat Sir Peter Blake sailed on. The students enjoyed the challenge of sailing these huge ‘round the world’ yachts in the beautiful Hauraki Gulf and also learnt about the marine environment. - Rosalie Kwan

Māngere College - 2022 51 Activity Days at Kokako Lodge On Thursday the 1st of September and Friday the 2nd of September the Year 9 classes travelled to Kokako Lodge for a fun day of activities. 9AU, 9ME and 9WN headed out on Thursday while 9RE, 9SI and 9YU set out on Friday and BOTH groups were pushed out of their comfort zone together with their deans, form teachers and teacher helpers. This is what some students had to say about their experiences….. “What I liked about Kokako Lodge was facing big fears like heights and surviving in the wild.” Tyrell Tenari 9AU “It was a very fun time for me. I laughed and smiled a lot. It was a great day!” Victoria Luatua 9WN “Amazing experience….Amazing team pushing us to our limits and putting together such good climbing activities.” Fouvale Fogavini 9SI “Something I enjoyed about the trip was the High Beam.” Elizabeth Logologo 9WN “What I loved about the trip was the High Beam which was a little bit scary because when you walked across, it felt like it was moving.” Kero Rahui 9RE “Archery was fun ‘cause it was my first time.” Katerina Tupuai 9AU “What I enjoyed was the High Beam. It was really fun even though we had mini heart attacks!” Sione Kuli 9ME “It was new and fun but also scary!” Tewai Pairama 9AU “I am proud for at least trying to climb the High Beam and Rock Wall.” Kovi Napaa 9ME “One of the things I found enjoyable was that I got to overcome my fear of heights.” Noelani Logologo 9YU The Year 9 Deans, Form Teachers and students would like to thank Mr Darragh for his organization of our 2 days of activities. - Ms Tupua In the beginning of Term 1 this year, students enrolled in a programme called “Te Ara ki te Whare Wānanga” (meaning road to further study) run by a team of teachers led by our Assistant Principal, Miss Ma. The aim of the programme is for students to gain university entrance, so that by the end of Year 13, students have the option of studying at university if they wish to do so. This is done by tracking academic progress through mentoring conversations and tutorials. Through those conversations, students learn about possible career pathways and from that they are able to assist with option choices and making sure they’re in line with getting university entrance. There have also been a few trips to the different University of Auckland campuses so students have more insight into the opportunities that are available to them after Māngere College. Te Ara ki te Whare Wānanga will continue on in 2023 and we look forward to seeing more of our students expand their knowledge of the resources available to them both within and after high school. - Manuia Fox-Romia Te Ara ki te Whare Wananga

52 Māngere College - 2022 On this day staff and students wore pink to Speak Up, Stand Together and Stop Bulllying. Many took part and over $300 was raised for the Mental Health Foundation. This day reflected how our school works hard to help create an environment where students fees safe, valued and respected, as well as taking part in an international movement. Photos by Caylis Masinamua - MC Media Pink Shirt Day during Term 2 was a huge success. Pink Shirt Day MC Drama Club The Drama Club commenced at the start of Term 1 this year as a way to encourage students to find a passion for drama. Students were able to push themselves in a variety of different styles of drama which included Shakespeare, Improvisation and script work. All students were welcomed into the auditorium and had the opportunity to work alongside a range of different year levels. In Term 1, the club began with Shakespeare. Four Year 11 students (From left to right: Nise Lam, Henry Mataora, Siale ‘Asi, and Anna La’ai) took on the challenge to compete in the annual Sheilah Winn Shakespeare competition held at Botany Downs Secondary school. Congratulations to the group who were awarded best audience interaction for their performance of the play The Tempest. We would also like to acknowledge Nise Lam from 11ML who was awarded best new performer. Soon Term 2 came around, the students looked at a range of scripts to rehearse in preparation for the Performing Arts showcase. The group performed two comedy scenes which had the audience erupting in fits of laughter each night. Towards the end of the term, the students then designed their own character masks. While the seniors were occupied with their assessments during most of Term 3, the juniors were developing their improvisation, script work and monologue skills. Though numbers were low, the students who attended were still enthusiastic and created some hilarious and creative scenes. Overall, there has been a fantastic turnout of students. Many students have developed their confidence throughout the year and it has been wonderful to see them grow. Thank you to Miss Watson, Mr Henry and Mr Euden for their support to run this club. We would also like to acknowledge the staff who have taken time to watch our students perform which has helped them build the confidence they need for their development as young performers. - Ms Watson

Māngere College - 2022 53 P-TECH is a high school/ early tertiary program focussing on developing digital skills and jobready students. It is a partnership between business, high school and tertiary education. The pathway involves five years focusing on NCEA Digital Technologies at high school and an Advanced Diploma in tertiary. P-TECH links students’ learning to the world of work and entry level roles. Apart from technical learning, students also gain opportunities to build work-ready skills, like communication, problem-solving, resilience, self-management and working in teams. This program is aimed at giving students opportunities to engage with the world of work so that they can successfully navigate their P-TECH career pathway. This opportunity is currently available to our Year 11 students who will continue being involved for the next two years. We will be offering the same opportunity to our Year 11 students in 2023. We are very excited at the opportunities that this initiative will create for our students, their families and the Māngere community. P-TECH INDUSTRY VISIT In October, our P-TECH students visited Foodstuffs North Island’s supply centre located at Landing Drive, Māngere. This is the largest distribution centre in New Zealand. The students completed an informative tour of the centre. After the Foodstuffs tour, the students travelled to Spark City, and took a tour of the Spark Innovation Studio. Students explored and learnt about emerging technologies such as IOT, 5G, mobile edge computers, smart technology and advanced Robotics. Martin La’a, Māngere College alumni and current board member, was there to greet our students. Martin serves on the Spark Foundation Board and was happy to share his knowledge with our MC students. VIRTUAL REALITY ROOM Our P-TECH students went to a VR Room for their end of the year celebrations. The students really enjoyed the VR room experience and connecting with both their mentors and other students from Onehunga High School. They loved the gaming and escape room experience. There was a choice for our P-TECH students to either go to Media Design School or MIT to attend a one day per week course for next year. Thank you all for allowing the P-Tech students out of your classes to attend the P-Tech trips this year. A big thank you to Ms Maskell and Mr Webb for supporting me with this programme. MOTAT STEAM Cell Workshop Year 10 and Year 11 P-Tech students attended the MOTAT STEAM Cell taster course workshop at Māngere College in September. Students were given an hour to solve a problem (working on putting pieces together to make machines work). Each group had a different activity and they worked collaboratively to make their machine work. All the boards were aligned together once they finished. Students collaborated well with each other and enjoyed this session. The takeaway point from this learning experience was that “If something doesn’t work for the first time, it doesn’t mean it is not going to work. You need to keep trying until you make it work.” - Nalini Singh (Pathways in Technology)

54 Māngere College - 2022 I had the opportunity to go on the Mind Body Soul course at Outward Bound and spend three enjoyable weeks with some very special students from Auckland. I had a great time during my three weeks at Outward Bound located in the Marlborough Sounds, attempting Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga ki Te Rakipaewhenua 2022. Te Ahurea was established in 1996 and this was the 26th year it was held here in Tāmaki Makaurau. For the first time, Māngere College Rōpū Kapa Haka performed at Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga and the students made our school proud. Our tauira’s emotions were beautifully expressed as they held themselves with so much mana on that stage. Ka tika me tuku mihi aroha ki a Whaea Janey, Whaea Arleen, Miss Potini, Whaea Huia (Ngā Rangatahi Toa) a, ngā whānau katoa i haere mai ki te tautoko i ngā tauira mō tēnei kaupapa whakahirahira. E kore ngā mihi e mutu. - Whaea Moana Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga REIPAI’S EXPERIENCE This kaupapa was an EPIC experience. It started with everyone coming in as individuals, then over time we became like one big whānau. Although our kaupapa came with its challenges, in the end it helped us learn about manaakitanga towards one another and whānaungatanga. I’m personally grateful for this kaupapa this year because it helped push me out of my comfort zone and made me a better version of myself. Thanks to all of my kaiako for believing in me and helping me see the leadership potential that I have. - Reipai Mutupaenga-Falwasser new and unique things including kayaking, hiking, a three-day solo camp, high ropes, and sailing. My favourite parts of the trip were sleeping on a boat under the stars and navigating a boat on our own using only the skills we had acquired. Tramping was another of my highlights; even though I hated climbing mountains, I had a great time singing and laughing with a group of kids from various backgrounds. I’ve learned through this trip that it’s alright to make mistakes since learning from them will help me become a better leader. I’ve also learned that learning from failure can boost my confidence and help me stop being afraid of failing. What I could take away from this camp is the quote that I’ve learnt from my instructors which is ‘There is more in us’. - Sela Alofaki Outward Bound: MIND BODY SOUL

Māngere College - 2022 55 We are pleased to share that Māngere College is one of the lucky schools to be drawn to receive calculators in partnership with Casio Office products and Consumer Electronics. An opportunity was taken to register for the Casio low decile school pack program. This initiative assists 10 low decile schools around the country with the opportunity to purchase a class set of new FX9860GIII graphics This year Sisters United brought two exciting programmes to our students at MC - these were Crown Yourself and the Young Queens Programme. Sisters United is a family based organisation that provides exciting, fresh and creative programmes and services’ to young Pasifika and Māori women aged 12 - 21 in Auckland and New Zealand wide (by the Goebel Sisters, Parris, Kendal and Narelle). Casio calculators FROM MONACO CORP Sisters United There have been several girls who have been on the Crown Yourself programme (once a week) to help develop their confidence, self esteem and leadership during this year. The programme is facilitated by three Year 13 students Rain Te’I, Temaleti Sinani, and Gardenia Lemoa who have been trained by Sisters United staff. The mentors, Rain, Temaleti and Gardenia, have also been involved with the Young Queens Programme which is a 1 year weekly mentoring programme run in Auckland High Schools for Year 12 & 13 Pasifika students. Rain was featured in an exhibition called ‘Brown & Beautiful’ at the Fresh Gallery in Otara in November. This exhibition was about celebrating the natural beauty of our Pasifika young women, their different shades of brown skin and varied shapes and sizes. In an interview with The Coconet TV she says “I am strong, I am intelligent, I am resilient. I am a Southside Success. I am a dream from those who’ve come before and a love letter to those who will come after.” calculators at a heavily subsidized cost. The graphic calculator is an integral part of classroom learning and has proven to be an invaluable aid to both the teacher and the student. 58 Māngere College - 2022 Karen Dance The performance is a wrist tying ceremony, showing themes of family and community through song and dance. Traditionally, it aims to fend off evil spirits by tying string to the wrists of young people. The ceremony symbolises renewing bonds within families and communities to create a sense of family; a home away from home. People who are from other cultures are invited and welcome to join as it builds unity between different cultures. - Mee Cho, Shwe Ko, Hser Ku Our Karen group enjoyed performing at Polyfest 2022 on the Diversity Stage. 64 Māngere College - 2022 Basketball This year we had 3 teams - Junior Boys team, Open Boys team and an Open Girls team. All of the players gradually grew together, as well as individuals. As we started training and got to know each other a little more, we would support each other as if we had been friends our entire lives. Basketball became a safe space for us. There was no awkward silence, no rudeness, just a shared love for the sport. And that is something I love when it comes to basketball. It’s where you can be yourself without judgement. There was never a time where we were laughing at someone. Laughter was always with you and never at you. I have been playing basketball since Year 9 and I can’t think of a time where I was laughed at. And I knew, even back then, that Basketball was my thing. Once I step into the gym, I can leave everything at the door. All my worries and all the expectations can be put on hold, and I can just play the game I love with the people I’ve come to love. I remember the lead up to playoffs. It was just around the corner and we all couldn’t wait. It was all anyone could talk about. And when it finally came, all of our teams would be seen cheering each other on from the balcony. One thing that I noticed is that we cheer for our teams, regardless of who you are. At the end of each game, we would all pile back onto the bus and talk and laugh about how our game went. It didn’t matter whether we won or lost. There was never a dull moment or a grudge held. There was only laughter and joy. Every year, at the end COACHES: Senior Boys Basketball – (Coach) Jerry Ah Sam / (Manager) Marina Potter Girls Basketball – (Coach) Jeremy Luki U17 Boys Basketball – (Coach) Simon Jackson Junior Boys Basketball – (Coach) Terisa Leaula / (Assistance coach) Likaan Davis-Ratumu Basketball has always been an outlet for me. When I’m stressed or overwhelmed, I have one pastime that always brings me peace, and that is the game of basketball. Basketball is a team sport that’s physical and hard working. This sport has the power to bond different people and create lifelong friendships. And I know, because it happened to us. of each season, we have a little prize-giving ceremony for our players. It’s a great way to spend one last time together before us seniors part ways. Just before the ceremony ended, dinner was served . We were all eating, having conversations and telling stories around the table. It’s moments like those that I will always cherish and it’s only through basketball that those moments were possible. We entered this year as strangers, and we left as family. - Ngaire Biddle

It was wonderful to watch them compete valiantly on the courts with their loved ones and team by their sides. Throughout their sports and training, these students showed excellent abilities and attributes. The bravery and perseverance these youngsters have displayed towards one another are one of the journey’s highlights for me. They have always maintained their consistency and sportspersonship. The team has managed to win all of its games despite the difficulty of playing in other schools, particularly for our boys who had no prior netball experience. I appreciate them for their excellent fair play and for letting me assist and encourage them along the way. This experience has been humbling for me and I am super proud of our team. 68 Māngere College - 2022 What a year it’s been for rugby at MC! It has been an amazing season, with all our teams playing with pride and determination. Our rugby teams have had downfalls and great wins but at the end of the day we always held our heads up and learnt from our mistakes together. Our downfalls didn’t ever once stop us from being proud of ourselves and no doubt the parents and supporters were too. During our trainings our coaches pushed us to do better every time in our skills and gameplans. Each training we focused a lot on team building and communication. As our coaches always say, “no matter how fast or good of a player you are, a lack of communication can bring the whole team down on the field”. Sometimes we will have those days when we just want to give up but thanks to our coaches for always encouraging us we never gave up. We would like to acknowledge new coaches Mr Le-Seminale Fata, Mr Tevita Ahokovi, Mr Takaji Young Yen, Mr Lalei Tiatia, Mr Mana Fata and Manager Ms K Leniu who have supported our 1st XV boys team this year. This year we had new sponsors XavierT & CO and MD Construction Ltd who have donated sports gear and uniforms to our school. Our captains this year were Folau Tongotongo and Gideon Faiane. Our boys played really well this season in Pool B, but unfortunately lost in the semi-final due to a technicality when we had a tie with Mount Roskill Grammar. We are looking forward to an improved team for 2023 and continuing with the support of our new coaches. Rugby 1ST XV BOYS

Māngere College - 2022 69 Our Girls Rugby team made it to the semi-finals but sadly didn’t win through to the final. What we learnt from this is that small wins matter because they prepare you for the bigger wins in the long run. We were very lucky and grateful to have our two beautiful coaches Rose and Kalo. We want to thank you for taking time out of your schedules to come train and motivate us girls to learn more. Thank you to our Manager Mr Henry for making sure that our academic grades were as good as our performance on the field. A huge thank you to Tai for always organising our uniforms and equipment - if it wasn’t for you, rugby, as well as the other sports wouldn’t be as successful as they have been this year. We are all grateful to have such amazing team players who help us improve and enjoy our sport of Rugby. Thank you! -Meliame Funaki

70 Māngere College - 2022 It’s been a hectic year but our school has managed to make volleyball a priority for the love of our students towards the sport. Volleyball may look like a simple sport but the effort wasn’t. Training had to be full of commitment, determination and energy and all I could say is every drip of sweat was worth it. Our girls and boys gave it their all and had fun learning new techniques, skills and most importantly we gained knowledge from the sport of volleyball. No doubt that those who joined and played for Māngere College had an amazing experience. For most students that joined volleyball I have to say the most Volleyball difficult part was choosing what they wanted to do since we were in the same season as Polyfest, it was a choice for them whether they wanted to do Volleyball or Polyfest since trainings and Polyfest practices were going on at the same time. Well done to those students who managed to do both! Our games were one of the biggest highlights, we won and lost games but we took it as a lesson to do better next time. For our senior girls team it was an emotional ride for all of us. That feeling when we make it in the top 10 and we verse others in our pool was nerve-racking but at the end of the day it was all love and positivity. All our early morning games to back home late from our games are tiring but we are also thankful that we were able to get the chance to play volleyball with others around South Auckland and make new friends. Thanks to our coaches Nancy, Mr Samu, Miss T, Mr Tusa and to our sports coordinator Tai for taking the time out of your busy schedules to help train, manage and prepare our volleyball teams because this would not have been possible without you all. Thank you to our parents and caregivers for your support and always checking in we love you all! To our fellow Year 13 volleyball stars thank you for being the best team player you could be. What we’ve learned throughout the volleyball season is that your team becomes your family, the ball becomes your best friend, and the game becomes your life. Also, an injury is a sign to get better and come back stronger. - Jasmine Lemoa SCHOOL LEAVERS 2022 GIRLS PREMIER VOLLEYBALL TEAM SENIOR BOYS VOLLEYBALL TEAM JUNIOR BOYS TEAM JUNIOR GIRLS TEAM SENIOR GIRLS TEAM 1 SENIOR GIRLS TEAM 2

This commitment helps Māngere College students achieve to their potential. ADVERTISERS We’d like to acknowledge our two advertisers for this magazine, Airport Oaks Pharmacy and Kainga Ora. These help reduce the cost of production, and enables us to keep producing printed yearbooks which is valuable to our school as a historical document and book of memories for decades to come. NEW SPONSORS This year we have two new sponsors for our 1st XV Rugby team, which has been invaluable to help resource our players with gear for training and games. Thank you to XavierT & CO and MD Construction Ltd for your support. SCHOLARSHIPS Financial support allows us to provide three groups of scholarships each year: • The Māngere College Entrance Scholarships cover most of the costs associated with starting as a Year 9 student at Māngere College. • The Māngere College Senior Scholarships are awarded to deserving Year 10 students. These are worth $500 and are used by the recipients to cover the cost of uniform and other school costs over their senior years. • Year 13 students can apply for the Māngere College Leavers' Scholarships. These awards are valued at up to $1500 to assist students to meet the costs of tertiary study. If you are interested in offering Māngere College any financial sponsorship which would further enhance our students’ future pathways please don’t hesitate to contact the school on [email protected].
