From the Director - Cherie Moore
Filled with toe-tapping rock and roll beats and the unforgettable
fashion of the 50s, Bye Bye Birdie is a great showcase for
these talented Glendowie College students. It has been a
total delight working with this cast and crew. I’ve directed a lot
of shows over the last five years, and this is one of the best
experiences I’ve had. That is testament to the leadership in this
school. There are a horde of helpers in this programme and my
heartfelt thanks goes to you all. Special mention and thanks
to the incredible work of the core team who have made this
possible; all the teachers involved in bringing the set, props,
and costumes to life, Andrew and Bev for your expert musical
direction, Olly for your energy, choreographic skill and vision,
Clare T for your technical prowess, and doing all the things -
including being the loudest back up singer at rehearsals, and to
the person who has held the process together - Clare Jennings
- you are beyond awesome, and your tireless work and support
of every person involved is seen and so appreciated - you are a
powerhouse. Thanks also to Gordon Robertson for your support
- I’ve never had a principal come in to rehearsal to check in and
voice their enthusiasm. How wonderful to see your investment
in these students and the arts go beyond saying yes to the
show. To the fantastic cast and band - I hope you are all so
proud of yourselves and each other - I know I am. Watching
you grow over this process and support each other has been
beautiful. Lastly, thanks to you - the friends and whānau of
these performers. Your support of their creativity makes all the
difference - tonight I hope you enjoy the fruits of their hard work
and have a great time!
From the Choreographer - Oliver Humphries
Choreographing Bye Bye Birdie has been a privilege and an absolute blast! I couldn’t have
asked for a more dedicated and fun cast of students to work with. They have been a dream
and I’m so proud of everything they are bringing to this production. It’s been a joy to explore the
fantastic music of the show and movement material from the late 1950s. I hope you enjoy being
taken back to the decade of Rock’n’Roll and Television Variety Shows, no doubt you will struggle
to get to sleep tonight with one of the show’s tunes in your head. Thanks again to the cast, and
to our wonderful creative team for all your hard work and dedication. You’re all wonderful.

Show Trivia
Originally titled Let’s Go Steady,
Bye Bye Birdie is set in 1958. The short story “Dream Man”,
authored by Bill Doyle, which appeared in the May 18, 1957
issue of “The Saturday Evening Post” may well have been the
genesis of the eventual stageplay.
The rock star character’s name, “Conrad Birdie”, is word play
on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is best remembered
today for his long career as a country music star, but in the
late 1950s, he was one of Presley’s rock ‘n’ roll rivals.
Conrad Birdie was a parody of Elvis Presley and the play was
based upon the furor that arose from Presley being drafted.
The character’s name, however, was the result of composers
Charles Strouse and Lee Adams finding the name of real-life
singer Conway Twitty far more humorous and safer to parody
than Elvis. Interestingly, Conway Twitty was in the US Army
first, before starting his singing career. Ironically, the show’s
producers originally wanted Presley for the role of Conrad
Birdie. Presley was interested, but his manager, Colonel Tom
Parker, refused to let Presley play a role spoofing himself.
The original Broadway production of “Bye Bye Birdie” opened
at the Martin Beck Theater on April 14, 1960, ran for 607
performances and won the 1961 Tony Award for the Best
Musical. Dick Van Dyke recreated his 1961 Tony Award winning
performance for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in this filmed
production.

been a pleasure to work with so many talented people on
this amazing show.

Bev’s experience as a teacher and her work as a freelance

BYE BYE BIRDIE Kim MacAfee
Cast Abhi Puthigae
12 Fifteen-year-old, self-possessed teen-aged girl, who
considers herself more mature than her “Conrad-Crazy”
girlfriends. She’s the president of Sweet Apple’s Conrad
Birdie Fan Club. Through random chance, she is selected
to deliver Conrad Birdie his final kiss goodbye before
leaving to join the army. Unfortunately, her boyfriend
Hugo has a few reservations.
Rose Alvarez
Emma Herbert
Rose is Albert’s secretary but dreams of the day when she
can adjust his title from “employer” to “hubby.” That was
always their plan, but time seems to have slipped away.
Despite his oft selfish and callous treatment of Rose, she
continues to support him, biding her time. Well, for a while
anyway. Every woman has her breaking point.
Conrad Birdie
Otis McKenzie
The “Elvis-style” rock star who is headed into the army; he
must be able to sing well, move like a rock star, and… burp!
Not going to lie, he’s kind of an undesirable sorta’ fellow.
He’s rude. He’s arrogant. He doesn’t show much regard for
others. This is, essentially, the iconic role of the show.
GLENDOWIE 2021
Albert Peterson
Nathan Johnson
He’s our story’s central character.
What, you thought it was Birdie? Nope. He’s the nervous
and high-strung president of Almalou Records who pays
more attention to his mother than to his girlfriend (who is
his secretary).
Mr. Harry MacAfee
Ryan Cleland
The frustrated father of Kim and Randolph who feels his
stature as a parent is continually challenged. He’s a great
source of comedy in the production. Yeah, we aren’t given
a ton of opportunities to see old Harry’s shtick. However,
he does have a couple of really great scenes in which he
has the potential to leave the house rolling on the floor
laughing.
Mrs. Doris MacAfee
Jessie Butland
The tireless, caring mother of Kim and Randolph who
knows just how to handle her irritable husband. Mrs.
MacAfee is a solid role. She has a wonderful scene
early on in the show in which she is mortified with her
daughter’s abrupt assertion of adult status.
13
BYE BYE BIRDIE Hugo Peabody
14 Dylan Wyness
Kim’s devoted steady boyfriend who is jealous of Conrad Birdie.
Hugo is Kim’s understandably frustrated boyfriend. Well, how
would you feel? You’ve just pinned the girl you’re completely
in love with, and the next thing you know she’s all onboard
to deliver the official send-off kiss to the teen rock idol of the
decade.
Randolph MacAfee
William Court
Kim’s younger brother; who sings one feature song. Randolph
is almost like the MacAfee family’s equivalent to Meg from
Family Guy’s Griffin family. He’s overlooked a bit, and when he is
acknowledged, he really isn’t given much respect at all.
Mrs. Mae Peterson
Lucy Hibbert
Albert’s mother, the quintessential “Mamma,” who never stops
parenting Albert.
Every scene in which she appears presents Mae unabashedly
working to guilt trip her poor son.
Ursula Merkle
Georgia Agnew
The hyper-enthusiastic teen-aged girlfriend of Kim’s who
leads the fans screaming for Conrad Birdie. If Kim registers
an excitement level of six on a scale of one to ten, Ursula
hits a twelve. She’s a pretty excitable kid. As Kim’s number-
one confidant, she’s always looking out for her best friend’s
interests, Ursula offers wise council to Kim in times of need.
GLENDOWIE 2021
Ed Sullivan
Andre Yray
Edward Vincent Sullivan was an American television
personality, impresario, sports and entertainment reporter, and
syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News and the
Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate.
Harvey Johnson/Mayor
Samuel Beadle
Howard’s son. Yeah, dad’s kind of a big deal. Harvey’s just an
average teenage kid in our fair town.
Mayor of Sweet Apple, Ohio
Gloria Rasputin
Mikayla Harvey
The gum-chewing, lame-brained, dancing secretary who is Mae
Peterson’s choice to replace Rosie as Albert’s fiancé. She’s not exactly
what one might expect as the embodiment of the ideal administrative
assistant, Gloria is a forceful, broad woman with true gusto.
