Māngere College - 2023 51 Mathematics and Statistics Another exciting year has unfolded for the Mathematics and Statistics department at Māngere College, marked by several noteworthy developments. The departure of Miss Ma, while a significant change, brought with it the opportunity to welcome Mr. Singh at the start of the year. His experience and expertise have proven to be valuable additions to our team. In addition to the new arrival, we also bid farewell to Mr. Hormes, who is retiring after dedicating 22 years of his life to teaching at Māngere College. We extend our heart-felt best wishes to him for a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement. It is clear that our department continues to evolve, and we look forward to the fresh perspectives and experiences that the future will bring. Congratulations • South Auckland Mathematics Competition (SAMC) year 10s placed 2nd in the finals • NCEA Level 1,2,3 students received $20 gift voucher for achieving Excellence Events • Math relay for Kāinga competition • Daily quiz and competition during Math week • Mathex team competition during Samoan Language Week • South Auckland Mathematics Competition (SAMC) for year 9 and 10 • Regional Mathex competition • Year 13 trip to engineering faculty at university of Auckland In terms of learning throughout the year, and with the new changes happening in 2024 for NCEA, the department has been proactive with planning units so that our students in year 9 are better prepared when they experience the new NCEA package as year 11 students. Due to Covid over the last couple of years, the effects on students’ learning has been evident. However, the department has provided opportunities in school by running tutorials at lunchtime, after school and on Saturdays in preparation for the Level 1 MCAT. In addition to the aid in school, our students were fortunate to have the support of free tutoring offered by the University of Auckland for year 11-13 students sitting externals for math and statistics, as well as online support through LearnCoach funded by AUT. Exciting developments through modified units are on the way for 2024. We hope that it will make the learning more relatable for our students. We would like to wish our Year 13 students all the best with their future endeavors and we look forward to another great year in 2024.
52 Māngere College - 2023 Performing Arts 2023 has been another successful and vibrant year full of exciting creativity and excellent performances from our Dance, Drama and Music students. We have had several composition finalists in the ‘Play It Strange’ competitions and our combined Performing Arts Awards Showcase this year brought the Auditorium to fever pitch as family and friends came to witness some awe-inspiring performances. We have also been through a period of staff changes, sadly saying goodbye to Ms Christine Lee (Teacher of Music), Mr Elijah Whyte (Drum Tutor) and Ms Lea We are delighted to have had the following students as 2023 PA Student Leaders! Our leaders were all chosen for displaying leadership within their areas, being respectful, responsible, and encouraging, and for demonstrating the MC Way. Thank you for upholding the standards for our department this year! MUSIC: Caylis Masinamua & Ricardo Samuelu DANCE: Cancy Maro & Almeera Shah DRAMA: Nise Lam & Henry Mataora Anae (Vocal Tutor) and we thank them for the impact they have had on our MCPA students. It has been a pleasure to welcome Ms Belinda Hopman, our new Performing Arts Technician, who has made an immediate impact within the department with her meticulous organisation and all the great support she has provided. This year has also seen the introduction of Mr Tamausu Vaotu’ua (Teacher of Music) whose lessons have both inspired and engaged our music students in their journey to seeking their own creative heights. We also welcomed Ms Leea Lamatoa (Vocal Tutor) and Ms Thea Doyle (Drum Tutor) and look forward to working with them for the foreseeable future. Our Dance, Drama and Music students have had many great opportunities and experiences this year both inside and outside of the classroom. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Massive Theatre Company, Red Leap Theatre Company, Kava Bowl Media, Creative Human Project, Stand Up Stand Out, Auckland Philharmonia Outreach Programme and Play It Strange for all their support and collaboration. Performing Arts Leaders 2023 The Creative Human Project Dance Workshop - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku open for the public (which got extended by a week due to the great reception), and were also on show in our Auditorium foyer at the PA Awards Showcase! The exhibition not only features some of our 3DAN students (and Mr UpokokeuHenry), but also some of the photos were taken by the students too! Over Term 2, our 3DAN class worked with Sierra Diprose, Dancer, Creator & Movement Educator from The Creative Human Project in a project that combines dance choreography and photography. The workshop results were put on display in a photography exhibition at the Māngere Arts Centre
Māngere College - 2023 53 Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Schools Programme Expressionz at the Library Stand Up Stand Out In Week 6 of Term 2, we got to take our Year 10 music students on a trip to watch the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra perform in the Auckland Town Hall. They got to hear the magic of classical composers such as Bartók and Tchaikovsky, musical theatre composers like Leonard Bernstein, and even a rendition of “Kia Mau Ki Tō Ūkaipō / Don’t Forget Your Roots” by Six60! As another part of our APO partnership, we were very lucky to have the Jade String Quartet come to visit our Year 10 music students. They performed a selection of music, taking them on a journey through music from Classical to Disney, then talking through how Classical music has evolved and turned into the music we have today! Thanks so much to APO for these opportunities for our juniors! To celebrate Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa - New Zealand Music Month in May, Expressionz (Caylis Masinamua, Seti Savele, and Ricardo Samuelu) were invited to perform a small concert at Manukau Library. They all gave great performances, and even had the audience asking for an encore and the group taking song requests! Congratulations to the trio who were also completing Music Performance assessments at the same time! Huge thanks to Emily Heeney for accompanying the trio on piano, and to ex-MC head boy Jordan Mauu for organising the event on behalf of Auckland Libraries. We had many entries at ‘Stand Up Stand Out’ this year in three different categories! Our musicians and dancers took to the SUSO stage in Solo Vocal, Group Vocal and Dance heats and performed incredibly well against really tough competition from other Auckland schools. Congrats to Jasmine Lemoa, Luisa Lualua, Meliame Funaki; Y11 trio Roselie Urika Filifilia, Stephne Maea & Sarah-Rose Vaomotou; our choir MC Collective, and our Level 2 performers. In Term 3, our Dance and Drama students had some trips to some amazing Auckland theatre productions! They first attended a performance of ‘Moe Miti’, a devised work by Red Leap Theatre Company that blended Pasifika culture with multimedia and choreographed movement into a cohesive drama piece. Our students were stoked to see some of the ways that drama and dance can be combined, and a lead to pathway in the creative arts after school (especially since one of the performers was still a high school student herself!) The second trip was to ‘Half of the Sky’, put on by Massive Theatre Company. The piece was a tear-jerking devised drama, and gave our Drama students a lot to think about as they analyse the work for their exams, as well as helping to build their knowledge around devising. Thank you to Massive and Red Leap for these opportunities! Dance groups WWY (led by Quade Lam) and Rāranga (led by Henry Mataora) for performing.
54 Māngere College - 2023 As finalists in the Play It Strange Peace Song competition, Year 11 group Limapoa Ah Sue, Tapu Iosefo, Dorothy Lologa, and Stephne Maea won a recording studio session to record their original song “We Are One”! They did that in Term 3 at Kava Bowl Studios here in Māngere. Play It Strange Recording Sessions Performing Arts Awards Showcase On 31st August, we held our annual Performing Arts Awards Showcase. We had a matinee performance for Bader Intermediate, and an evening performance for friends, family, and the community, both of which went amazingly! Our musicians, dancers, and dramatists were all fantastic and our audiences gave an awesome energy right back to our performers. We had representation from all of our senior classes, with outstanding performances from our Year 13 music and dance groups who took centre stage in their last year. Special shout outs to Quade Lam, Henry Mataora, and Almeera Shah who choreographed their dances; as well as Limapoa Ah Sue, Tapu Iosefo, Dorothy Lologa, and Stephne Maea for performing their original composition. Congratulations to all our award winners!
Māngere College - 2023 55 In September our L1 Sports Science class had the opportunity to go to the indoor Parkour facility called Flow Academy. They learnt some of the basics of Parkour or Free Running. Parkour is the movement through, over and around obstacles. It allows the practice of ease and efficiency of motion, being able to overcome obstacles and flow through an environment. Free Running is a similar experience but focuses on tricks and aesthetics. Our students got to learn how to roll, dive and climb over and across a variety of different obstacles. It was a fantastic experience for our students as Parkour and Free Running is not an activity they usually participate in. We learnt lots of new tricks and ways to move. Mike Darragh On 29th June 2023, the P.E. Department organised an educational and physical trip to visit the F45 training centre in New Lynn. 2 Year 13 and 3PED classes were fortunate enough to be able to attend the training centre. The main purpose of attending the F45 Training facility was to obtain knowledge about what different exercises did, how to properly perform each exercise, and to also help achieve the unit standard 3.9 we worked on. Attending the session brought an eye-opening scene for some of the students, who never really experienced that type of training at that level. 3 PED was also fortunate to have Māngere College’s very own Ms Mettam who helped facilitate the exercises. It was good to see everyone participate to their full extent and have fun at the same time. I think it was a benefit for all of us at the end of the day. “Push till you drop”, the facilitator said. The encouragement from each other was my highlight of that day, being that it was the first time for many, everyone pushed till the very end. Getting into the exercises, and feeling the momentum pick up was amazing as well. Thank you to Miss Tualaulelei, Mr Manhire and Ms Mettam for supporting us with our trip. Tavake Kamana An experience I enjoyed at white water rafting was kayaking freely with my classmates and just floating around in the water. Why? It was heaps of fun! It was so funny because everyone was falling off their boats and everyone was trying to tip others off into the water. Something new I learnt was that you Physical Education Parkour Experience must listen carefully to the instructor and don’t stop no matter what. The reason is that if you’re in the team boat and heavy waves are coming, you need to paddle off those waves as they can be dangerous. Something I am grateful to Vector Wero for the instructor guiding and helping our class, being super patient with us and making things fun. Another thing I am grateful for is just going on a trip, grateful to the teachers and staff who made this happen for level 1, 2, and 3 SPO classes. 56 Māngere College - 2023 Māngere College’s Science Department offers a diverse and comprehensive curriculum, catering to students with varying interests and career aspirations. The department offers a range of courses, from the fundamentals of biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science. This year, we were fortunate enough to receive the support from the Physics department of the University of Auckland. Our trip to the Physics department was an enlightening and captivating experience. We had the opportunity to engage Science Department with passionate lecturers who eagerly shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject, making complex concepts more accessible. The hands-on experiments and demonstrations left a lasting impression, illustrating the practical applications of the theoretical knowledge we had learned in the classroom. I would like to acknowledge the help from Neil Broderick and Andy Wang from the University of Auckland. To the Y13 students of 2023, on behalf of the Science teachers at Māngere College, I would like to wish you all the very best and remember to always “seek the heights.” - Viliami Bloomfield
Māngere College - 2023 57 At the end of Term 3 this year, our Senior Social Science students left Aotearoa bound for the shores of Tokyo, Japan. The trip examined the intricacies of urban density and planning in a city with over 35 million people. We wanted to look at how we can solve challenges at home with the knowledge we gained. Tokyo, the heart of Japan, greeted us with its neon lights and dynamic energy. In this metropolis, we observed firsthand the blend of modern architecture and ancient heritage. Our class marvelled at the efficiency of Tokyo’s public transportation system, a testament Social Science Department From Māngere to Tokyo, exploring the Urban Landscape to meticulous urban planning. We dreamt about the possibilities of a light rail or a metro system in Tamaki Makaurau to respond to urban growth here. The mesmerising Shibuya Crossing became a classroom in itself, illustrating the organised chaos of urban life at its best. Our exploration of Japan’s urban density and planning left an indelible mark on our understanding of geography. We discovered that cities are not merely concrete jungles but living organisms shaped by the interplay of culture, history, and innovation. The lessons we learned in Japan continue to inspire us, reminding us of the importance of sustainable urban development and thoughtful planning in our own community. -Jere, Mairangi, Michael, Antonio This year we launched our new senior course called Civics. Civics is based on the school leavers tool kit - this is a government initiative to ensure all students leave high school ready for the adult world. In 2CFP and 3CFP our aim was to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application. Recognising the need to nurture responsible, informed, and engaged citizens, our school embraced the vision of empowering students with practical life skills such as budgeting, renters rights, how to buy a home, KiwiSaver, enrolling to vote and how to conduct a critical inquiry. Some of our students were also involved in the elections this year. One of the core objectives of Civics was to instil a sense of civic responsibility and social awareness in our students. Students actively participated in inquiry projects and topics where they were required to demonstrate empathy, compassion, and the importance of giving back. -Kavi and Josiah - Senior Social Science Students. The Introduction of Civics
58 Māngere College - 2023 At the heart of our 2SUS and 3SUS courses are our hands-on projects, where students become architects of change. Collaborating with external agencies such as Auckland Council, Elmdon Enviro Hub, Kāinga Ora, Unitec etc. we initiated projects that ranged from tree-planting drives and waste reduction campaigns to sustainable energy initiatives. These projects not only raised awareness but also transformed our classrooms In our History classes this year our curriculum embraced topics central to our identities, ranging from cultural heritage and migration narratives to social revolutions and struggles for equality. These discussions challenged us to confront our biases, question norms, and acknowledge the diversity that enriches our shared human experience. This is ever more important in a world that is facing global challenges and an increasing inability to work together to solve some of humanity’s biggest challenges. Through the lens of history, we uncovered the stories of individuals whose lives mirrored our own struggles and aspirations. 1HIS and 2HIS explored cultural narratives weaving a tapestry of storytelling that reflected the multifaceted nature of our identities. - Joseph (Senior Social Science Student). In this term’s Social Studies classes, our Year 10 students have explored important topics like Social Awareness, Diversity, and Social Justice. But what’s truly remarkable is that they’ve taken action to enhance our community. Their journey began with letters addressed to Mr. Webb, Aupito William Sio, and even the United Nations. Our aim was to voice their concerns about issues that significantly impact our community. Mr. Webb came to visit our Social Studies class. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with students, lending an attentive ear to their perspectives and concerns. On behalf of all Year 10 classes, we extend our appreciation to Mr. Webb for his commitment to our students and their voices. Next, students from 10MWN harnessed their digital skills to take their campaign to social media. They also designed visually striking posters that they strategically placed around the school. Their dedication to spreading awareness was evident, and they left an enduring mark on our school community. Our students didn’t just feel empowered; they were also filled with immense pride for their collective contributions to our society. This experience is a testament to the compassionate and engaged nature of our students. They’ve shown us that they care not only about their immediate learning environments but also about the overall wellbeing of our community. This initiative exemplifies the dedication our students have for making a positive impact on the world around them. - Toofan Rahim Sustainability Courses: Our Projects with a Purpose SUSTAINABILITY HISTORY SOCIAL STUDIES GEOGRAPHY Unveiling Identities: Beyond the Textbooks in History Y10 SOCIAL STUDIES - SOCIAL ACTION 2 Geography Thank you to Mr Khan for your support of our 2GEO Research with the Guidance Field Trip to Manukau Event Centre, Auckland Airport Shopping Centre & Māngere Town Centre. Student voice about our 2023 2GEO class: “The topics really encouraged me to engage more, especially as I was taking the subject of Geography for the first time.” “An engaging topic was around Auckland’s flooding. I think because of it being a natural disaster and an urgent and serious topic, this got us all hooked.” “One of the highlights that I’ve experienced during 2GEO is learning more about the Auckland floods because it was a real-life experience that happened in my neighbourhood and community.” into critical-thinking hubs. One of our major projects this year was raising awareness of the Moth-Pod issue currently plaguing Māngere. These plants smother and suffocate native bush and plants, therefore removing a home for our indigenous birds. We collected the pods and destroyed them. We also worked on a project which has spanned the last 18 months with Unitec around the impacts of flooding in Mangere and how to design our campus to improve resilience. - Mikayle and Eh Htaw Kue - Senior Social Science Students.

62 Māngere College - 2023 P-Tech 2023 Māngere College has completed its second year with the P-TECH programme. P-TECH students complete a free, five-year structured programme that combines high school, tertiary university education, and tech workplace experience. Upon completing the programme, students will have both their NCEA qualifications and a New Zealand Diploma aligned to industry needs. Successful graduates of the P-TECH programme typically earn firstin-line consideration at affiliated industry partners when applying for jobs. This year, Year 12 P-Tech students attended MIT and Media Design School on Mondays to work on their first-year course at a tertiary institution which is part of the P-Tech Pathway course. Year 11 P-Tech students continued to develop their communication skills, building selfesteem and confidence throughout the year by attending workshops and working closely with their mentors. The Year 11 PTech students attended a database workshop at Westfield Newmarket during term 2 with the purpose of meeting ‘Nola’ the robotic customer services rep in Noel Leeming. Unfortunately, Nola called in sick the night before, so the students missed out on interacting with AI but they quickly adjusted to the change and managed to ask questions, and gather and collect data through the presentations by the Warehouse Group. Our students were amazing, they were respectful and responsible. They prioritized their learning over having fun; focusing on completing their workbooks. One of the tasks they had to complete was to investigate different types of technology in the mall – which ones were useful and which ones were useless. On the 18th of July, the Year 11 P-Tech students explored the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) looking at the history, development, and future of technology. They had an insightful time looking at different types of technology, such as gaming machines, vintage cars, and steam engines. They also had the opportunity to ride the tram to visit the Aviation Hall which housed some of New Zealand’s historical planes including commercial and military aircraft. The staff at MOTAT guided our students through developing codes for making their own fighting bots. Year 11 NOLA Trip MOTAT TOUR 2 Geography
Māngere College - 2023 63 Our students were impressed with the Innovation Studio at Spark and saw different types of modern technology that had not seen before, including a device which tests/monitors soil for moisture, VR technology, face recognition software, etc. They also listened to inspiring real-life stories from the amazing staff at Spark who worked in different areas of the company such as supporting customers, delivering key services and operations management. The key point from the speakers was how they started off at the bottom - from call centres and working at the retail shop - but they worked hard, saw opportunities and seized them. The Year 11 and Year 12 P-Tech students celebrated their year of hard work and dedication at Rainbows End. Joined by other schools and their mentors, the students strengthened their connections even more with others as they jointly tested their fear factor abilities. They all enjoyed their day, and despite the rain at the start they managed to make the most of all the available rides. It was a great learning experience for Year 12 P-Tech students to visit IBM and The Warehouse group this year. Students were briefed about the history of the industries, and they did a tour of both IBM and The Warehouse Group. Students actively participated in the design thinking activities, creating sketches of their own innovation of either a service or a product. They enjoyed the storytelling session at The Warehouse Group where two Pasifika employees shared their learning experience from secondary school to joining The Warehouse Group and the career opportunities available for P-Tech students. Māngere College - 2023 67 We give thanks to our Heavenly Father for His guidance and for allowing us to come together and showcase our talents for Tag Football this year. MC had one girls’ team and one boys’ team. Both teams played in the Senior South/East Secondary Schools Tag football competition held at Ngati Otara Park, Otara on Tuesday, March 7. Our teams played in the A Grade. We were able to play some brilliant tag, but unfortunately for us, a couple of schools were slightly better. Despite the short amount of time we had for training, our girls’ & boys’ teams still managed to place 3rd in our pool! Although it wasn’t the exact result we wanted, what mattered most was that everyone had fun. We were able to make new friends, bond with one another and make lasting memories. On behalf of both teams, we would like to thank Ms Mettam and Tai for being with us at our Tag Football competition. All the best to the 2024 Māngere College Tag teams. Silia Palenapa Tag Football

Māngere College - 2023 69 CMSS Competition 2023 Senior B Section 1 Winners! Netball Our first game playing against SCC was tough! None of us knew one another well so playing alongside each other was a whole different level. Despite this, the girls and I had amazing chemistry in terms of getting along. We were always there for each other on the court and whenever someone needed help, everyone came together. Our last game against Sir Ed was one of our hardest games! It pushed us to our absolute limits but it made us work and depend on each other even more. In the end, our girls came out victorious with a score of 30-23! Coming first place and being undefeated all season was such a great feeling, and being awarded medals and a trophy made it even better. The joy in the girls’ faces when we won was indescribable! All those hard training sessions, drills, working together, set plays and using the resets were all worth it because, in the end, we placed first for our grade! To my netball girls, I’m so proud of every one of you, I’m so thankful to have played alongside you all and I hope that SENIOR GIRLS NETBALL 2023: Back row (L-R): Caitlin Manase (Coach), Caylis Masinamua, Rangi-Navaeh Tapara Front row (L-R): Stajah Taufoou, Lupemu’a Kaufusi (Vice-Vice Captain), Charlee Nuku-Puletama Absent: Memory Williams (Captain), Tiana-Lee Tairea (Vice Captain), Luana-May Viniki, Lucia Aneterea, Myra Ropati shortly, we can play again. Another person I’d like to thank is Ta'i. Thank you so much Ta'i for taking all three teams on every single Wednesday. It’s not easy having to take care of that many students but you did it and we all appreciate you. You’re a very strong and hardworking lady. Thank you for taking the time to ref all our games too, we couldn’t have asked for a better umpire. Lastly to my coach, thank you for taking us under your wing and coaching us. You were so patient with each of us and you knew how to work with each individual, building them up to the best of their ability. We learnt so much from you and I hope you know that we all appreciate you very dearly. Your hard work and dedication to the team never went unnoticed. We are thankful for all the work you have put into the teams to help us develop our play and become better versions of ourselves. As a team member of the Senior Girls netball team, I would like to thank my girls for all the hard yards they put in. I am so proud to have been able to play and grow alongside you. Shout out to our Captain Mem who was a great role model and who stepped up to the plate. Also, thanks to our Vice Captain Tiana and Lupe for helping Mem throughout the season and being leaders in their own right. I am so grateful that I got to watch our team grow closer over the weeks. The only upsetting thing is knowing most of them will be graduating at the end of the year. But it was genuinely a pleasure to have played alongside you all. To our year 13 girls, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Thank God for allowing us this time to fellowship with one another. Māngere College - 2023 71 1st XV BOYS RUGBY The rugby season for the Māngere College 1st XV was a challenging. Despite their setbacks, Coach Brandon remained dedicated with the support of Coach Anthony to motivate the team throughout the season. Their commitment and encouragement helped the team change their mindset from being individuals to being team players. The team worked hard and showed incredible determination on the field, never giving up even in the face of tough opponents. Māngere College 1st XV never lost their passion for the sport, and their commitment to improving helped them to develop their skills and strategies. While the season may not have ended in victory, the team members have learned valuable lessons that will serve them well in future matches and in life outside of rugby. They have learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and teamwork, and had this hunger to play every game with a chip on their shoulder. As Coach Brandon said about the season, “Though we didn’t get the wins we were hoping for, I’m proud of the way our team never gave up. Rugby is about more than just winning; it’s about the effort you put in and the character you show on and off the field. Māngere College 1st XV demonstrated these traits throughout the season, and I know they will continue to do so in the years to come.” Head Coach - Brandon Yen Assistant Coach - Anthony Mulitalo Forwards Coach - Melz Yen Manager - Ms. Tualaulelei Captain - Sione Finauvala Tupou Vice Captain - Talalelei Asiata, Ma’afu Taufoo Back row (L-R): Pepefiti Siatiu, Steven Niutao, Toni Tupou, Qwanell Vi, Jt Tulimaiau Middle row (L-R): Antonio Tanginoa, Simione ‘Ahomana, Con-danny Lam, Isaia Nikau, Junior He, Sai Sauni Front row (L-R): Kevin Faasao, Mo’unga Palu, Sione Tupou (Captain), Mairi Nikau, Jack apolo Iusitini Rugby
