Foreword
Dear Students, Families and Friends of Belmont Primary School.
I am pleased to give you an opportunity to view the 2022 school magazine and give you memories of our
school year. Our school roll peaked at 444 students with 44 nationalities. Our school year will be
remembered for many reasons, including the mandate for Year 4-6 students to wear masks in Terms 1
and 2, however we did avoid having a lockdown, like we did in 2020 and 2021. School camps which are
traditionally held at the beginning of the year were postponed until the end of the year. We did not have a
school fair due to the limit on gatherings, however the Year 6 children still managed to have an internal
Battle of the Schools.
We welcomed Mrs Melissa Whiting onto our staff, while Mrs Ella Bioletti was employed in Term 1 for Mrs
Naera. Mrs Naera returned in Term 2. Mrs Emma Martin joined our staff in Term 3, while Mrs Pat Holdich
returned to support our roll growth classes and job sharing opportunities.
Mrs Clews resigned at the end of the year, after 27 years at Belmont Primary School as Senior Teacher
and Assistant Principal. Moira, thank you for everything you have done for the school community. Moira
was also on the Board as the staff representative for 21 years. Her passion, humour and friendship will be
missed by all the staff. Moira has taught many children and everyone will remember with fondness and
know that they were extended to be the best that they could be, every day. This is not farewell as Moira
will be working part-time in the Senior Syndicate.
It was with sadness I must advise that one of our staff, Fiona Knight, passed away. The staff and
community celebrated Fiona’s life in a fitting tribute to a wonderful person. Fiona will always be
remembered, especially for her fun activities and her love of the kids she taught.
The staff continue to be highly passionate, collegial and highly skilled. I am always impressed with the
commitment the teachers and teacher aides have to their students and families.
The BOT continues to govern the school with diligence and expertise under the astute guidance and
leadership of Simon Priddy then Tim Peacocke. Simon resigned from the Board after 9 years, with 6 of
those being the Chair. This Board has every child at heart when making governance decisions and the
members are extremely diligent, capable and hardworking. It is a pleasure to work alongside such a
supportive group of parents.
I would also like to acknowledge the work and effort of the PTA in supporting many wonderful resources
for the students. Briar Williams ably led this group of volunteers.
We had a wonderful school production of Moana. The cast were brilliant. Thanks Mrs Naera, Miss Peake
and all the other staff for your skills, time and passion for our performing arts programme.
We were able to celebrate Book Week, International Student Day, plus all our interzone sporting events,
which the children will remember for a long time. All classes were able to do their items and the winning
House each week, continues to be very competitive.
Finally, thanks to all the families for the support you give to your children and the school community.
Belmont Primary is a wonderful school to be a part of.
Enjoy the magazine, enjoy the memories of Belmont Primary School and I trust you will maintain your love
of learning and maintain the high values which have been constantly taught at school and home.
Our Best Always.

A Message from the Board
Thank you all for contributing to what has been a challenging year here at Belmont Primary. We appear to be
completing the year with more certainty and less covid-19 in our midst. We also finish the year with a new Board.
This is my last address as I have stood down from the Board after 9 years - 6 of those as the Chairperson. It has been a
very rewarding role and I have always been so impressed and amazed at the skill and dedication of Mr Cunningham, the
Senior Leadership Team and the teachers and staff here at Belmont. Thank you to the recent Board members and to all
of those others who have served on the Board with me.
For 2022 Mr Cunningham and his team were again called upon to guide the school and community through numerous
challenges as well as teaching our children. The Board has been greatly appreciative of this professionalism in the face
of the unknown. To the teaching staff who had to deal with sickness not only themselves, in their families and also in
the classroom - we thank you for your efforts this year.
We would like to express our thanks to Mr Cunningham and his leadership team, plus the superb teachers and support
staff for all their dedicated work and commitment to ensure each child has every opportunity for learning and
development.
We had to say farewell to Mrs Knight who passed away after a battle with cancer. Mrs Knight had worked at the school
for many years and was incredibly passionate about the school and our kids. We will miss her smile and laughter and
her presence in our lives.
The Board also acknowledges and thanks our great school community of parents and caregivers for all the hours of hard
work and input to the school which makes our community a thriving and engaging one. Our PTA does a spectacular job.
Their fundraising activities are very much appreciated by the Board. This commitment from the PTA helps to ensure our
school is well resourced and provides great opportunities for us all to come together and enjoy the spirit of the Belmont
Primary community.
To the parents and children leaving Belmont Primary this year, we wish you every success in the future. We trust that
you will look back on your time at Belmont Primary fondly and with the knowledge that you have always done your best
always.
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday and I look forward to seeing the new Board taking the school ahead into
2023.

Arawa
This year Arawa has made a massive comeback. We won class house points
eight weeks in a row which caught us up to the other teams. We hope at the end
of the year Arawa is the winning team. What makes a great Arawa member is
being kind to your teammates and the opposing teams, being supportive when
someone makes a mistake, being kind all the time, and trying your best in
everything you do. We have done alright in sports but there's always room for
improvement.
Frankie, Jack, Zoe, Thomas
Kiwi
It has been a privilege being House and Vice-Captains for Kiwi. Kiwi has come
really far and made it fun for us captains. We all hope the next captains will have
as much fun as we have. We were very successful in many sporting events such
as coming first in swimming sports and cross country. We have won the weekly
house points many times and gained magnets for our house. Our house is very
supportive and has helped many people improve. Everyone is always cheering.
Thank you for an amazing year, Kiwi.
Marcus, Ivy, Oscar, Ella
Ngapuhi
Ngapuhi has had a rollercoaster of a year, from last to second in the
house points leaderboard. We also came second at the swimming
carnival. We have been great at coming up with creative ideas to earn
house points and win. Ngapuhi has also shown great sportsmanship
throughout the year. This has been an amazing year and everyone in
Ngapuhi should be very proud of themselves.
Jesse W, Ruby B, Archie J, Eila S
Weka
Whether Weka wins or loses, we always show sportsmanship and great values in
any circumstances. This year has been very successful for Weka in terms of
sports and behaviour. Every Weka member is supportive of their teammates and
opposition. It has been a privilege leading Weka and watching everyone display
the values and “Our Best Always.” Weka has always been visibly doing their best
through the ups and downs. We are very proud of the improvements in Weka over
2022.

Let’s get icecream.” You can go swimming, “Now I’m cold.” Go get hot
chips! “Now I’m sick of the beach” Go to the movie theatre! There’s lots to
do at Devonport! Movies not for you? Go to Subway, sit in
the park, so much to do! I can’t choose. By Lola Huata

Devonport’s Tree
Big colossal tree near Devonport library. 110 years old. Older than
me! That tree must be the king of all trees ! It has two friends and a
fence , so people don’t chop it down. Waves are calling the tree, the
tree loves it by the sea. Giving us cool breath on land. That’s why you
never cut down old trees. Devonport’s library is a pet to the tree.

Devonport Poem
There’s a place that I love. Ice cream shop my favourite . Creamy
taste, reminds me of beach, water splashing on my hands. Lots of
flavours, my family gets ice cream, we go to the beach. Play
excitedly on the playground. Having fun, pies for lunch. Under the
big library tree, I see ice cream, I light up
with joy. I get ice cream, I want more. By Eden Hick

Room 15 - 2022
This year, we LOVED our Garden to Table sessions.
We created personification poems about our amazing school garden with a buddy. Then we got
together with a group and picked some of our favourite lines to create a group poem. Enjoy...
When the kids are gone, the garden comes
alive.
A neglected orange sat alone under the tree.
Boasting rosemary stood proud as bees
crowded around, waiting for their daily dose
of nectar.
On a stormy day the bamboo stake clenches
on to the tomato plant so it doesn’t
get fired from its job.
Blushing strawberries were hiding from the
prying eyes of the lonely lemon.
Sad spinach sorrowfully sank into the garden
beds as sneaky snails slowly made their way
up her wilting, brown stem and rotting
leaves.
Naughty gnomes were sprinting through the
garden when no one was looking.
Russet, red rhubarb blush as smiling
bystanders piled them with warm
compliments.
Big bold pineapples are as bright and as
kind as could be.
The KING of the garden is the apple. It’s the
yummiest, the fattest and the juiciest.
When dawn awakens, everything goes
quiet.

Year 6 Camp
It was a cloudy Tuesday morning when all the Year 6 kids hopped on the
bus with our amazing bus drivers Ed & Jan. After a long but very fun
journey, with many exciting stops along the way, we arrived at the Pacific
Park. We were all tired and needed dinner straight away. Dinner was
delicious; it tasted like a five star meal. After that we went to Bay Wave
pools. There were so many fun activities there, hydro slide, the pirate ship
park and a diving platform.
Our third day at camp was spent at Waimarino. We began on the kayaks
and made a sort of raft, each person holding onto each other’s kayak.
We all played Shark attack which is basically Cat & Mouse on water. It
was so hard to get the instructors. After kayaking, we all had an amazing
experience exploring Waimarino. We went on the blob, battled on the
gladiator pole and jumping on the spinning UFO. All of us enjoyed
playing with our friends and being in the water. It was an amazing place
to go to.
Skit night was also really fun. Everybody had lots of ideas and it was
really funny and exciting because you didn’t know what would happen
next. We all worked really hard and it paid off because every single skit
was really interesting. It was a great way to be together on the last night
of camp. It was an experience none of us will ever forget.

The Middle Syndicate classes had another
awesome year in our Garden to Table
programme.
In the garden, the kids weeded, planted, fed,
watered and harvested some amazing produce,
some even got the chance to use power tools to
construct tunnels to protect our produce. They
also planted out natives that were kindly
donated to the school by Restoring Takarunga
Hauraki.
In the kitchen, after learning the safety
basics, delicious dishes were enjoyed by all
(even staff sometimes got a sample at morning
tea after seconds had been had!) Clear
favourites from the menu were harvest risotto,
rhubarb & pear slice and lemon brownie.
Massive thanks go to the weekly volunteers and
to our sponsors - Hammer Hardware
Devonport, Countdown Barrys Point Rd, and The
Warehouse Milford. We couldn’t do it without
you all.
This year all the Year 5 Kids went to the MERC
camp in Long Bay. We did many challenging
activities like surfing, climbing, survival, raft
building, and much more. We also had delicious
meals and shared some home baking. We all
watched a movie at night and then went to bed in
our dorms. We all had a great time doing activities
with our different teams. In our free time, we
mostly hung out in our dorms and explored. We
both agreed that our favourite part was surfing
(even though it was a bit cold)! We all had a
fantastic time and are looking forward to our next
school camp.
