UCOL celebrates the diversity of - FESTIVAL -
its students and graduates, with
the annual Flavour of Cultures
event. This event is a vibrant and
colourful celebration and gives
those attending the event a feeling
of being in another world with the
sights, sounds and tastes on offer.

Last year, guests were entertained with
Indian dancers, Chinese calligraphy and
an array of craft stalls and cuisines.

UCOL wanted to celebrate the array of
cultures represented on campus as well
as in Palmerston North. With the event
boasting audiences of several hundred
people, there is something to delight
everyone, from belly dancing, Irish dancers
and a Japanese drum team.

Students coming to UCOL from overseas
are encouraged to get involved, by doing
something interactive around their culture,
or to come along as a guest and soak up the
atmosphere.

Flavour of Cultures happens around
November each year, and local clubs and
communities are asked how they would like
to get involved. It is certainly a must see in

ANDY HALEWOOD

SENIOR FURNITURE LECTURER AND JOINERY LECTURER

Learning from the ground up was a great way to develop
the skills that would lead Andy to become a lecturer in the
Diploma in Fine Furniture at UCOL. S tarting out working as an
apprentice on the tools gave Andy an appreciation of the work
that needed to be done.

He decided to share his knowledge and passion and joined UCOL. Having
had real experience and working in industry Andy wanted to ensure that his
students get out of the classroom. “When working with wood, it’s not enough
to have it ready to work on in the classroom. I want them to see how it’s
milled. They need to hear it, see it, smell it”.

“This is about more than designing and making a functional piece of furniture.
This is about taking a slab of wood and turning it into someone’s prized
possession. It’s definitely an art”.
