basketball

After a season of disruption in 2020, it was great
for our teams to be able to complete a full season of
games this year.

The Girls’ team, under the watchful eye of Mr
McMurtrie, competed in the Under 19 grade and the
level of competition in this grade was much higher
than in previous years. As our team had a mix of
age groups and levels of experience, it was always
going to be challenging. This was not helped by
injuries to key players for much of the season.
However, the team kept giving of its best and saw
the season through, despite the challenges and they
should be proud of their efforts. With most of the
team returning in 2022, they have a good base to
build on.

The Junior Boys were entered into League 1 this
year after being very successful in League 2 for the
past three years. This was a very challenging move
up for this group of boys. Coach Randy Skelton was
able to keep a keen group together, despite the
adversity of heavy losses at the beginning of the
season. The resilience of the team and coach saw
improvement over the season and the differential
between our boys and the opposition reduced as the
season progressed.

The Senior Boys were another team that moved up a
grade this year to the Under 19 League 1
competition. This was a leap of faith as we had not
been in this grade for the past four years. The boys
were up to the challenge. During the season they
managed to go through section play with only two
losses.

Placing 4th after pool play, they were up against top
qualifier, Albany Senior High, in the semi-final. In an
exciting game, our boys came out winners 37-35.
The final was played against Rangitoto who the
team had beaten earlier in the season. Finals are a
different thing, and the game was close throughout.
Gaining the ball with less than 20 seconds to play,
Zeth Marcos coolly slotted a three-pointer to tie the
game up and send it into overtime. However, fate
was not on our side and Rangitoto took out the
game 44-40. Many thanks to Rangitoto coach,
Jayjay Mitchell (who had coached some of our boys
in previous years), for the respect he showed our
boys through his kind words at the aftermatch
awards ceremony. Thanks to Karl Amponin and
Randy Skelton for coaching the team this year.

A number of talented girls signed up to be part
of this year’s team. These girls showed up to
training ready to learn and improved their skills
very quickly at the start of the year.

The 2021 season was a spectacular one. With girls' 1st XI
many of the girls never having played football
before, they all stood up to the challenge and,
using the skills they were taught and some great
teamwork, they were able to take the win in
many close games. The Senior team managed to
secure a place in the top six in the grade, with
the opportunity to play-off for the
championship cup. Although they tried their
best, the team was beaten by some excellent
opposition and the team placed fifth overall in
their grade, a fantastic achievement. A big
thank you to Ms Higgins and Miss Colquhoun
for all their help, support and great coaching
skills throughout the season.

We are all looking forward to a great season in
2022, tapping into the talent and passion these
girls have for the sport.

The Senior A Boys team had quite a shake up

gelled well and although they had some very
tough games, they managed to learn a lot and
improve their game play. The Senior Boys B
team had an amazing season, playing some
awesome and very close games throughout
their season. Our senior boys have so much
potential and have spent the year training for
the 2022 season. Hopefully they will have the
chance to represent the school at the Senior
Championship Tournament in March 2022.

The Senior A Girls team were sitting in third
place in the North Harbour competition when
Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the
remainder of the season. The girls trained hard
throughout the term and achieved some great
results. They are a young team who show a lot
of promise for the 2022 season. The Senior B

show a lot of promise. This team did well for
their first year in the senior grade playing some
tough teams. These players all worked so hard
throughout the season to improve.

The number of junior players involved this year
with drive and determination is amazing. They
started the 2021 season with a bang, showing
great potential and talent. The future of
volleyball at Glenfield College is exciting with
these junior students.

A big thank you to Ms Colquhoun, Mr Dove and
Mr Gardner for organising and helping out with
the teams, and supporting them at all their
games. Also a big thank you to all the coaches
who gave up their time and put lots of effort
into harnessing the talent we have at Glenfield
