The 1st XI Cricket Team had a challenging year, given the Covid disruptions in Term 1 and Northcote College not having a home ground due to the building works at school. Despite that, there were two teams competing on Saturdays and two on Wednesdays. The high points in the season included: • The First XI Boys competing well in the 1B competition • Thanishk Allam of the First XI being the highest wicket taker in the 1B Competition with 17 wickets in 5 games • First XI Boys captain, Shivam Nair (Victor Ludorum), excelled with the bat again, with scores of 100 against Kristin, 88 against Green Bay College and 58 against Avondale College • Damon Rickman scored 120 against Liston College (his first ton for the First XI and only the 4th player to score a century for the College in 16 years!!) • Ricco Howarth making his debut for the First XI as a Year 10 and performing admirably The team would like to thank coach and manager (Richard Smedley and Vimal Nair) for stepping in and taking the 1st XI cricket this season, doing the scoring and umpiring on Saturdays, and generally ensuring that the boys played the game in good spirit and enjoyed their cricket. Shiv Nair scored 60 goals and received the Golden Boot and Players Player of the Year awards. The team’s success was based on a strong and resilient squad who rose to the occasion when required. Goalkeeper Sam Hazeldine is thanked for his commitment and service to the team. His team spirit came to the fore in his inspired performance in the last nail-biting league game of the season. Hockey future looks bright HOCKEY This year showed great promise for the future of hockey at Northcote College. All teams enjoyed a very successful season. The Boys and Girls 1st XIs were dedicated, motivated and worked hard during their grading round and were both promoted to the grade above. The Girls 1st XI started the season incredibly strong winning 4 out of the first 5 games. The boys 1st XI finished the regular season placing 5th. The girl’s 2nd XI showed high energy and enthusiasm throughout the season and were always willing to give everything a go. The highlights were seeing the development of the players, and our first win as a team. The boy’s 2nd XI had a tough but fun season for the team. The boys grew as a team and enjoyed playing together, which was great to see. Look forward to next year as the teams continue to grow. The highlight of the hockey year was the trip to Whakatāne for the girls and boys 1st XI teams. They competed in the tier 3 & 4 Hockey Tournament. After the disruptions of recent years, this was the first hockey tournament since 2019. It was a great week of team bonding, traditions, and hockey. Well done to all the players. The boys and girls have combined over the summer months to play summer social hockey in mixed teams to continue their skill development into the next year. Good luck to all the Year 13s that are graduating this year. We wish you all the best. 52 UT PROSIM ALIIS SPORT
Hartley Cup back in the trophy cabinet! NETBALL I t has been fantastic to see so many eager netballers playing this year and to actually get to play a whole season without any interruptions. I would like to say thank you all for your commitment and efforts this season. The Premier 1 successfully retained their place in the Open A grade. They also defeated Birkenhead College to win back the Hartley Cup after a short absence from our trophy cabinet. Netball also achieved some great results at the Upper North Island Secondary competition after being promoted to B grade in their last tournament. The team managed to not only retain their B grade status but built on this to finish in the top half of B grade. This placed us 48th in the North Island out of 112 schools. Team 2 and Team 3 also had great seasons with both teams playing the semi finals. We had some outstanding netballing talent coming to the school this year. Both our Year 9 teams won games during grading and got promoted to higher grades. Thank you to all the students who helped coach, manage and umpire games. This cycle of giving back to Netball at Northcote College is a huge part of the Netball culture at school and is represented by many outstanding current students. We wish the Year 13 players best for your future and encourage you to continue playing this amazing game! We hope you had an enjoyable last season at Northcote College. It is not possible to successfully run a school sport without our volunteers, and we would like to thank all the amazing parents who have helped out this season. Whether you were a coach, manager, score keeper, supporter, or just on drop off/pick up duty, your help is always appreciated. Garima Singh, COORDINATOR FOR NETBALL 2022 NORTHCOTE COLLEGE 53 SPORT
Strong rugby season RUGBY 1st XV It was a strong season for the Northcote College 1st XV. The team finished 3rd in the 1B competition. They also played an outstanding game against Birkenhead College and retained the Stott Cup. The Thames exchange happened after a gap of three years and the team played and won the rugby 7s game, which helped retain the exchange shield. The team also played two pre-season games which prepared us for the season and showed that we had the makings of a good season. Season highlights included outstanding defence and commitment to ensure good wins, beating Kaipara in the season game and then in the final game for 3rd position. It was an exciting game, with a fantastic kick by Ethan Ring to seal the game. The team was co-captained by Lucas Davidson and ’Aiveni Ngata, who showed strong leadership throughout the season. The players and the team stepped up when it counted. Overall the team had 6 wins and 7 losses. Thanks to parents and whānau for their support through the season. We are very proud of the players’ perseverance. Thank you to the dedicated coaching staff – Dan Patrick and Leigh Utton and manager, Natalie Ring. We look forward to another successful season next year. To the school leavers, all the best for next year: thanks for the season, and we hope to see you playing on the club field. 1st XV Coaches and Management Youth 15 The Youth 15 had a great season with 8 wins and 3 losses. The team finished 3rd on the points table at the conclusion of the regular season. Many of the group were returnees from the Youth 15 team of last year. They established strong relationships over that period and really played for each other. We won our last three games after the school holidays, because of our team spirit and training ethic. In our last game, we beat Westlake at Westlake. We focused through the year on developing the life skill of perseverance through rugby. The most notable example of this is the team coming from 21-0 down to beat Kaipara 28-21 (who finished 2nd in the competition). There were many key performers. Special mention to Isi Uhi, who was the player of the year. Thank you to the dedicated coaching staff - Mike Dudley, Geoff Taylor, Matt Tonga and Blair Franklin, and manager, Paul Yates. VOLLEYBALL TAG FOOTBALL Northcote College was represented by three teams at the North and Central Auckland Tag Tournament. The tournament was delayed, and all three teams had mixed results. Both girls teams played each other with the mainly Year 11 team coming out narrow winners. The students all played well and came home suitably exhausted! Fleur McGhee TIC TAG FOOTBALL Volleyball has had spectacular growth this season with many new faces. The Senior Boys and Senior Girls competed in Term 1 with both teams performing well. Luke Joyes coached both the Senior Boys and Girls teams along with playing in the Senior Boys team. It was really good to see large numbers in Junior Volleyball this year – with Junior B Boys, Junior Girls, and a development squad of players who were keen to play and improve their skills. Seeing the enthusiasm and the willingness of the students to work hard, Shane Manoa decided to coach the Junior Volleyball teams this year and has been a big reason for the tremendous growth. Aoife Cantwell has been a constant anchor, managing both the Senior and the Junior Girls teams. Randell Buenafe helped manage the Senior Boys team. A huge thank you to Alan Martin, Peter Steele, Kathryn Teeboon and Joanna Parker for helping out with volleyball transport this year. We have also had coaches from Harbour Volleyball take 16 training sessions in Term 3. We saw a lot of keen volleyball players attend these sessions and develop new skills. We would like to thank the student coaches; Te Mauri Templeton, Luke Joyes, Shao-Chi Chen and Hasyanda Darmawan, who have assisted with junior volleyball this year. We would also like to thank Duncan Babbage, Margarita Thompson and Suzanne Wheeler for being parent helpers. We see a bright future for volleyball at school. Garima Singh SPORTS COORDINATOR I t was a year of growth for Underwater Hockey. Special thanks must go to our fantastic student coaches this year – Liam Harper & Huyen Vu who not only coached our students but also played and umpired games throughout the season. A massive thanks to Brett Harper and Sarah Gibbs who managed and supported the team this year. We had a great win over Orewa College and finished with a nail-biting draw against Macleans College, finishing up 13th= out of 16 teams. It’s a tough competition as a mixed team having to play in the Boys Division. The tournament marked the end of the season, and also the end of an era, with Lauren Gibson, Hannah Christie and Callum Starr playing their final game of school waterpolo for Northcote College, after playing together since Year 9. I never liked the windy road; it always lasted an eternity. But once the car slowed to a crawl and the smell of salt infiltrated the air, I’d know that we were here. The waves would crawl up the sand, reaching for unaware feet. As the sun rose, peering over from behind a hill, oystercatchers would scramble over each other in their haste to escape people strolling along the beach. As I stepped nimbly over the rocks, I would glance down at little fish as they darted back and forth. Sometimes we would be lucky, and an octopus would be cowering under a rock, conducting an orchestra of sand. Waving around its tentacles of flame as it gathered shells to defend itself from prying eyes. The waves were wild stallions, rearing and charging right upon the shore. They would scour the beach for unsuspecting souls to pull into their watery depths. But during a certain time in the day, they would retreat and the waves would calm. We would be summoned, brandishing boards and braving the sea. Pushing us forward and dragging us back, sometimes we would catch a wave, and sometimes a wave would catch us. A churning maelstrom separated the vast ocean and the estuary, but occasionally it would dwindle down. As we walked along the shore, the sand would envelope our feet, greedily grabbing as we sauntered through debris hacked up by the sea. When the weather permitted, we would wade out to the pontoon, gasping like captured fish as we reached the floating behemoth. When the water swelled up and devoured the beach, then it would be time to adventure over the bridge. We were malevolent gargoyles, anticipating the thrill of flying down, down, down… As the sun crawled down west, reaching with its long glowing fingers, we would collect our bikes and chase the dying rays along empty, winding roads. The wind, toying with our hair, would oppose us defiantly as we torpedoed in endless circles, our laughter drifting along the air currents. When the moon finally trudged up from its slumber, we would crouch on the beach, chatting as the stars twinkled merrily and the sunlight slowly evaporated. Whānau class year filled with highlights Whānau day at Little Shoal Bay (Mōunu Pioke) A highlight for Te Whānau o Te Kākano was a Whānau Day down at Mōunu Pioke (Little Shoal Bay). In lieu of having a Marae trip this year, parents, students and teachers all met at Little Shoal Bay to enjoy whanaungatanga (relationship building) and fun. We played sports, shared kai, and did an Extreme Challenge. This game was mentally and physically challenging and urged everyone to collaborate and work well together as a team. Mataariki community celebration The school was transformed into a magical starlit wonderland on Wednesday 22 June to celebrate the rising of Mataariki with our school community. A menu of interesting workshops were on offer about land rig, the star compass, the māramataka Māori Lunar Calendar, finding Mataariki in the night sky and stargazing. Stan Conrad shared stories about his 37 years’ experience of sailing on waka hourua (double-hulled canoes) through the Pacific. We were fortunate to have Taurima Elisaia-Hopa (Deputy Head Prefect, 2021) and current Year 13 student Savahna Cassidy to facilitate the star compass workshop and share their knowledge, skills and experiences. We also want to acknowledge Noenoe Barclay-Kerr and the experienced kaumoana waka crew members Haimona Brown and Te Miroa Maxwell for sharing their mātauranga Māori with our community. Me mihi rā ka tika. E kore e ea ai e te kupu tā te ngākau e rongo nei. A significant highlight of the night was the way that so many students across the school worked together to prepare the kai for the night. They prepared it, cooked it and served it to whānau and community. Students were able to share their skills and knowledge with their peers. It was a great opportunity to work together and to celebrate Mataariki! Kapa haka Another highlight this year has been kapa haka starting up on Thursday mornings each week. It is great to see the progress that students are making in kapa haka as they work hard to learn new waiata and haka. A special mention must go out to the kapa haka group for their help with the pōwhiri for Thames High School, and for supporting the kura with the waiata tautoko support song. This provides authentic opportunities for students to express themselves through their culture. Ki ngā tuākana e wehe atu ana i te kura. To our school leavers, He koi koe a runga, he kama a raro, he kākano koe e kore e ngaro. Nōu te ao e hika e. You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. – Dr Seuss Ko te ao he tio nui. E kai! The world is your oyster. Get it! Arohanui ki a koutou. Year 9 students particularly impressive I t is hard to believe that we have come to the end of Year 9 for our wonderful 2022 cohort. It feels like only yesterday that we welcomed our new Year 9s to Northcote College. 245 students arrived ready to be part of a new community, to embrace all the opportunities secondary school has to offer, and to make lifelong friendships. Year 9 students quickly became familiar with the routines of secondary school, superbly supported by their Year 13 peer support leaders. Year 9 students came to grips with a six-day timetable and a large variety of subjects while building positive relationships with their teachers. Students showed real resilience as they navigated this new world, especially after the many interruptions experienced during their time at intermediate school. I have been so impressed this year with the number of students who have actively reflected our school motto: kia manaaki te tangata, to be of service to others. A large number of students volunteered for service and leadership roles this year. Year 9 students volunteered to be Open Day guides, buddies for new students, language ambassadors, Bake ‘n’ Shave Charity fundraisers, class student representatives on Student Council, school librarians and student coaches at our local primary schools. Students were also involved in Trees for Survival planting and New Zealand Sign Language Week. It has been such a pleasure to see students involve themselves in acts of service and living our values of respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment. Year 9 students also showed a commitment to the wider life of the school through their involvement in a variety of special events and experiences: Kapa Haka, Pink Shirt Day, the Lion Dance Group, the school band, the school choir, Talent Quest, debating competitions and the many sports teams on offer from football, to netball and basketball. This year students have showcased their talents and a commitment to sport, music, arts and their cultures. Year 9 students are also commended for their interest and commitment to their learning. While much of their intermediate school experience and learning was disrupted by Covid and lockdowns, Year 9 students started their first year at secondary school with an interest and enthusiasm for their learning and the new subjects available at Northcote College. Despite some disruptions again this year due to Covid, Year 9 students showed resilience and a commitment to their learning. Year 9 students were particularly impressive as they experienced exams for the first time; they were responsible and respectful as they navigated the routines and expectations of examinations. It has been an absolute pleasure working with our Year 9 students this year. I am very proud of their efforts and achievements. I would like to thank the amazing Year 9 form teachers of 2022 who have guided and supported our students this year: Ms Chen, Ms Gosling, Ms Henry, Ms Hiha, Ms Johnson, Mr Martin, Dr MacFarlane, Ms Oxley, Mr Plummer, and Mr Yang. There is a lot to look forward to next year, including Year 10 camp which is always a highlight for the year. Year 10 camp gives students the opportunity to gain experiences outside their comfort zone while building strong and positive relationships with their classmates. It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye as the Dean for the 2022 cohort. However, I know they will be in great hands under the guidance of Sophie Lindfield. I look forward to hearing about all the amazing activities, experiences and learning that will happen next year and for many years to come. Year 9 2022, well done for an amazing year. I hope you have a wonderful holiday and return next year to take on all the learning opportunities that Year 10 offers. REBECCA KAY ‘It has been an absolute pleasure working with our Year 9 students. Amazing memories have been created I cannot believe I am writing my Year 10 Dean’s report; these last two years have passed by so quickly. It doesn’t seem that long since we did our Intermediate transition visits and here we are now; transitioning to senior school. We started the year with Covid-19 still rife in Aotearoa but as always, our students rallied with their perseverance and determination to succeed. Masks and separated desks became the new normal. We were fortunate enough to get our Year 10 camp underway in Motutapu, even if it was a little later in the term than originally planned. It was our first school experience in almost a year where we did not have to wear masks. We felt normal again and it was wonderful! The cold, dark evenings didn’t dampen our spirits and we were so fortunate with the weather throughout the week. It was a week filled with fun experiences for the students and after two difficult years with Covid restrictions, Year 10 2022 needed this break more than ever. For some students, it was their first experience away from home and for others, they overcame their fears and got involved in the daily activities which included rock climbing, kayaking, survivor challenge and archery. Every form class also took turns cleaning the kitchen after dinner and serving up our delicious meals; important life skills that will reach beyond secondary school. It was an amazing week for all and the staff enjoyed it thoroughly. We returned very tired after our week away but wonderful memories were created, new friendships were formed and relationships with form teachers were strengthened. I must thank my incredible team of form teachers, without whom I could not do this. Mr Buenafe, Miss Cantwell, Mrs Grobler, Mr Holmes, Miss Lindfield, Miss Parbhoo, Mr Steele, Mr Tocker, Mr Underdown and Whaea Shaunee – you were invaluable at camp and our students continue to thrive because of your dedication and support. This year, many students continued to be involved in extra-curricular activities including Talent Quest, numerous sports and choir. Many also gave service to the school on Open Day, worked behind the scenes in tech, joined the Student Council and even became great buddies for our new enrolments throughout the year – including some long awaited international students. The welcoming nature of Northcote College students makes these experiences even more special for our overseas visitors. Good manners and kindness will be remembered long after you finish school and I am so proud of the students who model this in their daily lives. 2023 will see this cohort progress into senior school where NCEA and credits will become part of their daily vernacular. They have chosen their six subjects and are beginning to figure out their strengths in their learning to begin their pathway towards NCEA Level 1. Make everyday count. I look forward to the successes that are in store for you in your senior schooling. We are all here to support you; never forget that. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí – Praise the youth and they will flourish. Stay safe team WLM; see you all in 2023. Stepping out of their comfort zone 2022 was a much-anticipated year for Year 11 students. It has been a difficult couple of years for them as juniors, however, their resilience and perseverance during many interruptions put them in good stead for success this year. I have been delighted with the Year 11 students’ efforts and achievement in the internal assessments and preliminary examinations. Their school report comments were a credit to them and bode well for the externals. I also took a lot of pride in how well students have transitioned from the junior to senior school. Students have matured and started to think about pathways. Many students started to put their hands up as leaders, and this time next year we will have our 2024 prefects selected. The year kicked off with our pastoral care programme, involving goal setting and becoming familiar with NCEA. All of a sudden ‘credits’ became a buzzword and the journey to 80 credits started. It was particularly pleasing to see many students set goals to achieve Level 1 with either a Merit or Excellence endorsement. Already some students have achieved their goals before the external examinations. It was good to see so many students recognised at senior prizegiving. However, I know many of our students have worked hard and achieved excellent results, although they did not receive a certificate. I see all your achievements this year, and I’m extremely proud of all of you. Students at Northcote College are given many extra-curricular opportunities, and it was pleasing to see so many students participate in the wider life of school. Many students formed integral parts of their sports teams with some Year 11 students being selected in premier teams. The students conducted themselves well on the sporting field and played their respective games with high skill and spirit, representing their school well. This bodes well for next year for many of our premier teams with so much young talent coming through. To be of service to others is not just our motto, but a key part of our culture at Northcote College. There are aspects of a Dean’s job where you need the support from students and their input is crucial. Examples include the welcoming of new students into our year level. This year we had some international students come and experience our way of life as well as many new enrolments. On every occasion I have found that our Year 11 students were always willing to be a ‘buddy’. With this comes the responsibility of introducing the new students to the ‘Northcote way’ and ensuring they settle in well. They have done this with care and in many cases strong friendships have developed. It has also been pleasing to see some students step out of their comfort zone and contribute to our year level assemblies, which is much appreciated. Lastly I want to acknowledge all our form teachers. We meet once a week and we discuss and track all of our students. I could not have done this without them and I’m grateful for their advice and support, not just for me but for all our students. So a big thank you to Mr Bradley, Mr Clarke, Mr Monro, Mr Taylor, Mrs Manoa, Ms Silvester, Mr Williams, Mr Zaloum, Mr Lydiard and Whaea Shaunee. Congratulations on resilience and results I want to start off by immediately congratulating all of Year 12 students. For some it’s ‘well done’ for making it through to the end of the year. For others it’s a pat on the back for completing NCEA Level 2 before the external examinations! And for those who have already moved on from Northcote College this year, there’s admiration for you making a plan, working towards it and achieving your goals – whether it’s further study or getting into the workforce. Continuing with the theme of admiration, this year started off with the announcement of some amazing academic results. Around 75% of our cohort achieved NCEA Level 1 with a Merit or Excellence endorsement. This is a 5% increase on last year’s Year 11 results. It is an excellent achievement for our year group, particularly when you consider the level of disruption students faced across 2021. We had hoped these disruptions would be over by 2022, which was supposed to the year we got back to normal – it was far from it! On day one we greeted each other with hidden smiles, and muffled voices behind masks – all in the spirit of keeping each other safe and healthy. Unfortunately it was hard to maintain the consistency of learning as we encountered isolation periods for both staff and students, particularly in Terms 1 and 2. Despite all the challenges, we got on with it, did what we needed to do, and had a lot of fun along the way. It was awesome to see different events start up again. Our Year 12 students were able to participate in a range of cool activities: school sports, the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Competition, theatresports, talent quest, market stalls, class trips, and much more. A particular highlight for me, and I’m sure a lot of students, was the Senior School Ball. It was a glamorous event, and it was great to see so many Year 12 students dressed in their formal attire – they all looked so grown up! I’m most excited for next year’s ball, where some of our students will take on the responsibility of organising the event. Start thinking of a good theme. That also reminds me, we need to get ready for the Year 13 group dance. Who’s good with choreography? I want to finish off my report by acknowledging the amount of work our Year 12 students have put in this year to reach their goals. Through determination, resilience and hard work, our Year 12 students have achieved incredibly well and are working hard towards their final year of school. My advice going into next year is to keep looking out for opportunities. When you look back at your final year of school, I can guarantee that you won’t remember all the times you spent lunchtime scrolling on your phone. You will remember joining a band, joining a team, starting a club, organising a competition, planning for costume days, putting together a study group, taking on some leadership, or whatever you can think of! Enjoy a well deserved summer break, and I look forward to seeing you back as Year 13s! I first met all 240 of you in February 2018, on your first day at secondary school. I loved how most of you were shorter than me, if only for a while. You were nervous and excited. Over the years there have been many interclass competitions; swimming relays, athletics, dodgeball, tug of war, touch, and football. If you don’t remember, 9KAY won most. This started a love hate relationship (KAY loving it and everyone else hating it). It’s been a privilege sharing these years of your life with you all – through the ups and the downs, the highs and the lows. Through Covid, where you did the mahi and got the treats! You have all shown perseverance and gained remarkable resilience. One of the tests of resilience was having to cope with not being able to go on Year 13 camp. Instead, we adapted to a day of fun and games where we brought back the massive waterslide. It was great to unwind and enjoy each other’s company in friendly competition. And the waterslide was awesome! Finally, sports tournaments were back – as were drama productions, talent quest, and an amazing ‘dance all night’ ball. Staff who have become regular ‘ball attendees’ over the years said that ‘the dance floor had never been so packed, nor the students so joyful in each other’s company’. The Year 13 Showcase, managed by Jess Warren, was a highlight this year – by Year 13 students, for Year 13 students. What a talented bunch. The Drama production Love and Information at Auckland’s Q Theatre was an outstanding performance by our talented actors. This year has been a year of lasts for Year 13 students. Last drama production, last talent quest, last games, last sports tournaments, last assessments, last form times, last assemblies, last school ball. I would like to thank the form teachers for their very hard work – especially Melissa Beaumont, Jane Blyth, Heidi Haringa, Stephanie Tanner and Shaunee Hiha, who have been there since Year 9. The form teachers set the tone and have done a fantastic job. I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers. School is a partnership, and I have appreciated your continued support. You have done a great job and the students would not have done this well without you. Further thanks go to the SLT; Vicki Barrie, Mike Dudley and Scott Reed, for trusting me to look after the year of 2022 and their support throughout. I would also like to acknowledge the support and aroha of my friend and colleague, Karen Russell. Her knowledge and expertise has had a significant impact on my deaning. Congratulations on your personal successes this year. I look forward to hearing about all the wonderful things you will do and accomplish! Ngā manaakitanga. You’re off to Great Places!
